AB - The tendency to improve the energy efficiency of windows has led to an increase in the number of panes used. The greater weight of the window sash leads to a loss of its geometry during normal usage. This deformation of geometry is caused by its own weight, and thus reduces the efficiency of preventing heat loss. All the positive effects that are obtained by using multiple panes of glass are thus lost. As window manufacturers often try to cut production costs by shortening the time of kiln drying, this paper researches the effect of using elements with different moisture content. Articles on similar topics were reviewed and it was found that there were no available data on the researched topic. Only about 20 different articles on similar topics were found, but the starting conditions or input was greatly different. Also, there are no official standards that cover the strength of window corner joints. This paper analyzes the influence of the change in moisture of the elements on the strength of the joint. Three groups of window corner joint samples were examined. The first group of samples was the control group that was supposed to determine the strength of the joint when the window beams were made with the recommended moisture according to a corresponding standard (12 +/- 2%). In the second and third groups, the moisture of the beams was taken as a variable factor, namely the moisture content of 18 +/- 2%. The results of this study show that the strength values of the currently used corner joints (double mortise and tenon) are different at different moisture contents. As expected, the samples with the recommended moisture content had higher strength values than the samples with the higher moisture content. There are many challenges in proper kiln drying and the final moisture content has a crucial impact on window strength. As windows have a specific purpose in buildings, they should have sufficient strength to be properly used over a long period. These obtained results should demonstrate the importance of the moisture content of wooden beams used in window production.

AB - This paper presents an analysis of a basic model of wooden chair. The aim of the paper is to optimize chair itself as joints using finite element analysis. Contact forces and deformations of two mostly used joints in furniture industry: oval tenon and a mortise, and dowel and a hole was analysed. The theoretical analysis was performed using the finite elements method, whereas experimental verification of the results, was obtained by invasive methods by testing samples on rigidity and durability according to European norms. Verification of the obtained stresses and strains was carried out using strain gauges positioned on chair samples. During the production of test pieces types of fit and types of joints were varied. Presented results showed that connection between side rail and rear leg presents the most critical spot in chair construction. Comparative analysis of the results obtained by finite element method and rigidity tests, showed that setup of parameters during finite element analysis was well done and presents recommendations for further research.

For this purpose, fasteners and material types on the failure loads of dining table corner joints have been analyzed experimentally and statistically. Double ended thread bolts with different drilling regimes have been used as fastener types. A parallel investigation of rigidity and durability of tables, and withdrawal capacities in accordance with the according to current norms, was performed. According to the results, it is concluded that the diameter of the drilled hole significantly influences the value of the withdrawal strengths of the screws. By analyzing the effect of drilling diameter on the rigidity of tables, a statistically significant difference was determined. As the drilling diameter increases, the rigidity of the examined dining tables decreases.

AB - This study investigates variation in the dry film thickness (DFT) of a coating applied by roller coater on the surface of wood in real industrial conditions on a UV finishing line. It was examined how DFT is influenced by the temperature of the liquid top coating, the position of the sample on the conveyor, and the position of the measurement point along the length of the sample. The three-way interaction between the temperature of the liquid top coating, position on the conveyor and position along the sample did not have a statistically significant impact on DFT. However, an increase in the temperature of the liquid top coating (from 24.1 to 24.8 degrees C) caused a decrease in the viscosity of the coating and a significant reduction in DFT when samples were positioned closer to the coating supply hose or in the middle of the conveyor. When the temperature of the liquid top coating was lower, the variation in DFT at different positions across the conveyor was not significant. A higher temperature of liquid top coating led to significantly smaller DFT for samples closer to the supply hose and in the middle, compared with those further from the supply hose. It was also found that DFT was greater at the forward end then at the back end of sample.

AB - The subject of this paper was a research of physical and mechanical properties of LVL composed of peeled poplar veneers in core layers and only outer layers of beech peeled veneers, so as the examination of window frame glue joint strength produced of this material. LVL boards have been hot pressed in industrial conditions, using appropriate phenol formaldehyde (PP) adhesive. Samples for corner window frame glue joint strength testing were glued with PVAc D4 class adhesive. Statistical analysis showed that there were significant differences both in moisture content and density of LVL boards regarding their thickness, while in the case of hardness this difference did not exist. Examinations of LVL glue line shear strength showed that both phenol formaldehyde (PP) and PVAc D4 class adhesives fulfilled standard requirements. The results of corner window frame double tenon glue joint strength produced from combined poplar-beech veneer LVL indicated that such material could be used to produce window frame corner joint, strong enough to withstand the additional load, without an increase of the cross section.

AB - The variations in number and method of applied joints within storage furniture gave idea for this investigation. Importance of joint selection and its geometrical characteristic is clear if we bear in mind that the joints are critical points in the structure, and the rigidity and durability of storage furniture are in direct correlation with the type of the applied joint. Results presented in scientific papers provide little useful information to the engineer for the safe selection of the optimal joint. Number of joints along the connecting line (depth of the box type element) engineers determined empirically. In order to define stress state in the storage furniture, data on size of the load, that the box element has to with stand during its use, should be determined. The aim of this study was to determine the size and character of the loads in corner joints in storage furniture. Based on this data, as well as on the basis of information about the strength of the corner joints it is possible to calculate the required number of appropriate joining elements for each separate case.

AB - This paper presents the results of a parallel examination on the strength of oval tenonmortise joints in two groups of test joints. Joints from group A were made with both shoulders of tenon, while joints from group B were made without the lower shoulder. Examination of strength was conducted on a chair joints rear leg-rail. The results of the examination indicated that joints in group A had a higher average bending moment capacity in comparison with the joints in group B. However, the significance of difference in strength between the two groups of joints was not confirmed by the statistical analysis.

AB - The analysis of spatial furniture with Finite element method (FEM) provides answers to many engineering problems. One of the fields which is not wholly solved is analysis of glued joints. In order to analyze joints by FEM it is necessary to have access to data on size and type of deformation which occurs as a result of overlap type of fit as well as data on thickness of the glue layer in joint. This paper provides answers to the impact of fit on the distribution of glue in the gluing surface. Test were conducted on oval mortise and tenon joint. The thickness of the glue line was measured on 800 samples. Based on the results the overlap occurred in the majority of samples (over 80 %). Average value of the thickness of the joint zone impregnated by glue amounted to 0.07 mm.

The objective of this study was to examine the influence of bending pattern on bending strength of finger jointed beech wood. In structural uses finger jointing is finally the major method to end joint timber for the production of glue-laminated elements. There are no bending strength experimental results for finger-jointed hardwoods for investigations conducted in Serbia. Two finger jointed profiles were studied in accordance with DIN68140. The finger joints were made by side and by face of beam. Length jointed samples were loaded at the side and in the face. The obtained results led to the conclusion that the direction of load, gluing surface and the position of joint influence on the strength of continued longitudinal beams.

AB - Machinability has been defined, in a general way, as an ability of a certain structural material to be machined by cutting or deformation through common, economical production techniques and technologies. However, a significant disadvantage of this definition is that it does not define the way in which this ability (machinability) is quantified and measured. This research deals with with ways of determining numerical values of parameters of machinability during the process of machining oak wood by longitudinal routing. In order to determine the factors of machinability in the function of tangential cutting force the authors used multifactor orthogonal linear plan of experiment. Analyzing the position of straight lines in the given diagrams and the values of the exponents in the model the following can be concluded: Average tangential cutting force increases with the increase of any of the analyzed factors; With regard to intensity, cutting depth has a greater effect on the cutting force; If the cutting depth increases, the increase of cutting force is faster when feed per edge is greater. If the feed per edge is increased, the increase of tangential cutting force is more significant when the value of cutting depth is greater.

AB - Only a few studies were found in which joints are taken into consideration while analyzing spatial furniture by usage of finite element method. This paper presents results of effects of type of fit on strength of oval tenon-mortise. When calculation are to be made in solid-mechanics, specific input parameters must be defined. In most modern finite element software's Young's modulus of elasticity is one of the basic data. The type of strain, which is result of the fit with splice, has impact on the changes in the Young's modulus of elasticity, which is the basic parameter in the defining of the material of the model. Aim of this study is to define rate of deformation of oval tenon-mortise joint as a result of fitting influence. Type and size of strains which occur in a joint in case of the fit with splice were examined with templates which were set on a joint. Based on this study results, the type of fit has influence on strength of the joints. In the presence of the fit with splice, a permanent change in the dimensions of the plug and hole will occur. During joining of joints with a splice fit, most strains belong to the group of elastic strains, which by all means contributes to the joint strength.

AB - Both the scientific experience and the engineering practice indicate that the decision making processes in the course of solving complex designing problems require an analysis of a great number of different construction variants. These types of decision-making processes are time consuming and do not always result in the selection of an optimal solution. That is why the methods of numerical optimization are applied in a wide range of technical sciences to assist in the selection of the best solution. The first step in solving the problem by using the Finite element method is to determine the type of chair earmarked for modeling, and to determine the dimensions of the chair elements.

Na čvrstoću kritičnog spoja utiču površina lepljenja, tačnost izrade, vid naleganja, vrsta i vlažnost drvnog materijala, kvalitet lepka i režimi lepljenja.
AB - Strength and durability of different types of chairs is mostly function of rigidity and type of joints. Classification of chairs was completed upon their critical points. Based on this divide, chairs were classified into six categories. Based on previous research, strength of joints have been influenced by gluing surface, machining quality, type of fit, species and humidity of wood material, glue quality and gluing parameters. Research have been carried out on two groups of chairs, and two groups of joints. Machining quality, type of fit and gluing surface, have been varied during experiment.

AB - The result of parallel investigation of chair durability, which has been made in two different wood species (beach and Paulwonia tomentosa) has been presented in this paper. Static and dynamic loads has highest values in seating furniture, and that is the reason why chair has been chosen to bee representative for testing new species, which could be used in furniture production in Serbia. A shown results indicates on possibility that this species can be used only for production furniture which wont bee imposed with heavy loads during exploitation.
