AB - This paper aims to analyse the dynamic responses within FTW constructed on the riverbank, focusing on pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), and the dynamics of calcium and magnesium concentrations. While some research has been carried out on Ca and Mg behavior in constructed wetlands no papers specifically addressed the removal mechanisms of these ions in FTWs have been found. Results showed that both polluted and treated water exhibited characteristics consistent with a mildly alkaline environment. Extremely low DO levels in cells with floating islands were increased after water passing through cell with algae. Ca removal efficiency in cells with floating island cells ranged from 2% to 6%, while the cell with algae achieved 23% to 49% efficiency. Modest Mg removal (1-6%) could indicate potential challenges in Mg removal processes within the FTWs. The analysis of plant responses to polluted water exposure reveals species-specific variations in Ca and Mg concentrations in shoots and roots. Ca concentration in algae tissue increased over time contrasting the marked decrease of Mg content. The study also revealed a gradual decrease of Ca and Mg concentration in stone wool corresponding to exposure duration. This research contributes to a better understanding of the complex dynamics of water treatment in FTWs, emphasizing the need for continued investigation into ion removal mechanisms, plant responses to increased Ca and Mg concentrations, and the role of algae in these biological systems.

AB - Organic matter is considered one of the main sources of water pollution caused by the discharge of wastewater of different categories directly into rivers. The increased content of organic matter serves as a source of food for water microorganisms and significantly lowers dissolved oxygen of the recipient. Floating treatment wetlands (FTW) are an innovative green technology that removes excess organic matter from water. This paper shows the effectiveness of floating treatment wetlands in removing organic matter from the water of a polluted urban river. Cells with floating islands had BOD reduced by 84-91%, COD in the range of 57-65% and TOC by 16-20%. The highest efficiency in COD and TOC reduction was achieved in Cell I where P. australis was planted, and BOD in Cell II where C. indica was planted. The results of these studies showed that after 6 days of treatment of polluted water, a high reduction of BOD and COD was achieved, as well as a satisfactory reduction of TOC concentration.

AB - The excess Na content in water can cause serious environmental and health problems. Most of the previous studies have indicated the potential of constructed wetlands (CW) in sodium (Na) removal from synthetic water in controlled conditions. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study to investigate the efficiency of the floating treatment wetlands (FTW) for the removal of Na from the polluted urban river. The present study also expands our knowledge of phytoremediation potential of rarely or never used decorative terrestrial and aquatic plant species in CW or FTW. The results imply that proposed. FTW model can ensure efficient Na removal. Even though the efficiency was negative or low during the first 3 treatment cycles, FTW was able to remove Na from polluted water by the end of water treatment. The highest Na removal efficiency of 44% had cell 1 with Phragrnites australis followed by 43% in cell 4 with decorative macrophytes (Iris pseudacorus, Iris sihirica 'Petry's Blue', Alisma plantago - aquatica, Lythrum salicaria, Menyanthes trifoliata) and cell 3 with P. australis and Canna indica (25%). Cell 2 planted with C indica showed the lowest efficiency of 5%. Species A. plantago aquatica had good potential for Na accumulation from water. Also, it can be assumed that species M trifoliata had a share in the Na removal. Translocation of accumulated Na from belowground biomass to shoots was very low in all species except M trifoliata. Algae Cladophora glomerata enabled further water polishing with maximum Na removal efficiency of 23% in cell 5 at the end of water treatment. Further studies need to be done to investigate all mechanisms responsible for Na removal in FTW and to ensure proper species selection for Na removal in floating treatment wetlands.

AB - Water pollution is recognised as one of the major environmental problems. Floating treatment wetlands (FTW) have emerged as a powerful tool that can help in the revitalisation of polluted waters. This study is set out to assess the feasibility of selected plant species in FTW to accumulate Cr and Ni from water contaminated with low concentrations of both heavy metals. The results showed that all investigated species contained more Cr and Ni in the belowground biomass whereby the translocation of these metals into the aboveground parts was very low. Species Phragmites australis had great potential for accumulation of Cr and Ni with significantly higher Cr and Ni concentrations in roots compared to the other investigated species. Furthermore, the present study suggests that species Iris pseudacorus may also have a good potential for removal of both heavy metals, species Canna indica for the accumulation of Ni and species Alissmaplantago - aquatica, Menianthes trifoliata and Iris sibirica 'Perry's Blue' for the accumulation of Cr. Future studies should concentrate on the investigation and assessment of phytoremediation potential of the same species growing in water contaminated with higher levels of Cr and Ni.

AB - Pathogenic microorganisms in water pose a great risk to human health. Therefore, it is necessary to find an efficient, environmentally friendly, and economically acceptable solution for their removal from polluted and wastewater. This paper presents the efficiency of a biological system with floating islands in the removal of pathogenic microorganisms from the water of a polluted urban river. The modified floating treatment wetland consisted of a collection tank, 4 calls with floating islands and 1 cell with algae, which enabled additional water polishing. The results of the research showed that the biological system constructed on the bank of this river had a high efficiency in reducing the number of various groups of pathogenic microorganisms. Within the cells with the floating islands, 100% efficiency in the removal of coliform bacteria of faecal origin was achieved, and the reduction of pathogens was continued within the cell with algae. The realised efficiency of removal of total coliform bacteria was 100% in all cells, except in the cell 4 with decorative aquatic macrophytes, in which the efficiency was 97%. The number of intestinal enterococci was reduced in the range of 92 to 97% in cells with plants, and up to 98% in the cells with algae. The floating islands and algae also enabled a high reduction in the number of aerobic heterotrophs and facultative oligotrophs. In addition, the ratio of these microorganisms had a value above 1 during the entire period of water treatment, which indicated that natural processes of self-purification of polluted water ran smoothly in the floating treatment wetland. Due to the reduction of pathogenic microorganisms, water that belonged to class V, i.e., III, after the discharge from the biological system, had the characteristics of water with excellent ecological status (class I).

AB - Natural wild cherry populations in Serbia are a part of the southern border of this valuable forest tree species distribution range. The survival of these marginal provenances in Serbia as well as in the wider region is threatened by climate change, small population sizes, low competitiveness, etc. Therefore, it is recommended to artificially assist population regeneration while increasing their genetic diversity. Although knowledge of the amount and pattern of the specie's genetic diversity is a prerequisite for its effective conservation and use, related research in the region is scarce. The main goal of this study was to determine the amount and pattern of phenotypic variability of natural wild cherry populations in Serbia. Possible link between revealed pattern of phenotypic variability and genetic differentiation of the provenances was discussed. Fruits were collected in nine natural populations. Ten morphological traits of the fruits were measured, and average germination rate of the provenances was assessed. The least variable trait was the fruit width (CV = 6.2%), while the most variable trait was the petiole thickness (CV = 29.4%). Analysis of variance revealed significant among-provenance variation for investigated fruit characteristics (p lt 0.01; alpha = 0.05), except for the petiole thickness (p = 0.92). Although variability among provenances was significant, the level of within-population variability was much higher (41.2-52.1%) than among-provenance differentiation (5.3-15.2%). The pattern of among-provenance variation was determined by a correlation analysis between provenance mean values and their climatic-geographical variables, whereby fruit thickness and petiole length proved to be useful diagnostic traits. Mean fruit thickness was significantly and positively correlated with altitude (R = 0.69; p = 0.04), annual precipitation as snow (R = 0.80; p = 0.01), and annual degree-days below 0 degrees C (R = 0.70); p = 0.04). The average petiole length was significantly and negatively correlated with the annual precipitation as snow (R = -0.69; p = 0.04), while it was positively correlated with annual heat to moisture index (R = 0.71; p = 0.03). The results revealed an ecoclinal pattern of phenotypic differentiation among the provenances due to their habitat's altitude and other ecological variables closely related to altitude. Although this study basically dealt with phenotypic variability of wild cherry fruits originating from natural populations, the results indicate likelihood for genetic differentiation of the provenances due to altitude. This likelihood provides the basis for recommending vertical seed zonation, as well as congruent use of reproductive material for assisted restoration of wild cherry populations in Serbia. However, to confirm this presumption of ecoclinal pattern of genetic differentiation, it is necessary to conduct analyses of various phenotypic traits in common garden experiments (e.g. provenance trials) as well as analyses of appropriate DNA markers.

Od svih vrsta najveće štete pričinjavaju Sphaeropsis sapinea i vrste roda Armillaria.
AB - Austrian pine is one of the species most often used for afforestation in our conditions. In the area of Avala, afforestation with Austrian and Scots pine began in 1899. The stands of Austrian pine located on the northern and northwestern foothills of the Avala Landscape of Outstanding Features are 115 years old, while the stands on the southern and southeastern side are about 65 years old. Two-year research in the area of Avala recorded the presence of 18 species of fungi on Austrian pine. Out of that number, 6 fungi were found on needles, 5 on needles and seeds, 2 on roots and stem bases, 1 on cones, 3 on trunks and branches and 1 species in vascular bundles. Of all the species, the greatest damage is caused by Sphaeropsis sapinea and species of the Armillaria genus.

AB - To assess the genetic potential of the reproductive material source, we studied the variability of 10 pedunculate oak groups at the level of morphometric characteristics of seed and one-year-old seedlings. In autumn 2017, acorns were collected from the seed stand RS-2-2-qro-11-828, whose primary purpose is the production of quality seed for artificial forest regeneration. Over the entire stand area, ten groups of five mother trees were selected for seed collection. A sample of 50 acorns per group was used to measure the length, width, and mass of the acorn. The obtained values were used to calculate the shape index (length to width ratio) and volume (using the formula for the cylinder volume calculation) of the acorn. Nursery testing was initiated in the nursery of the Institute of Forestry in spring 2018 and the height and root collar diameter of 1+0 seedlings were measured. The average values obtained for the observed acorns and seedlings in the study indicated high intra-population variability. The results of the analysis of variance showed statistically significant differences between the sampled mother tree groups for all observed properties except for the acorn length. Based on the obtained results, the study seed stand can be evaluated as a high-quality stand for the production of reproductive material. The obtained results are only preliminary. However, they are a good starting point for the determination of diversity, all with the purpose of producing good quality oak reproductive material.

AB - U radu su analizirani morfološki parametri kvaliteta jednogodišnjih sadnica hrasta kitnjaka (Quercus petraea (Matt.) Liebl) i njihovi međusobni odnosi. Mereni su sledeći morfološki parametri: prečnik u korenovom vratu, visina sadnica, masa nadzemnog i podzemnog dela sadnica u apsolutno suvom stanju i zapremina korena.
AB - The paper analyzes the morphological quality parameters of one-year-old sessile oak (Quercus petraea (Matt.) Liebl) seedlings and their interrelations. Based on the performed analyzes, it was determined which of the measured morphological parameters, with minimal time and resources spent, gives the most accurate estimate of the quality of one-year old seedlings. For the conducted research, seedlings were produced in the nursery of the Institute of Forestry in Belgrade, in uniform environmental conditions from seed collected in seed stand RS-2-2-qpe-22-169. The seedlings were produced in the same nursery seedbed, and the sample for analysis was taken by dividing the seedbed into four sections and taking 30 seedlings from each section by random sampling. The following morphological parameters were measured: root collar diameter, height of seedlings, weight of above and underground part of seedling in absolutely dry condition and root volume. Based on the measured values, height ratios were calculated as follows: height:root collar diameter, weight of aboveground part of seedling: weight of underground part of seedling, and quality index. The height of the seedlings and root collar diameter are good indicators of quality, which is confirmed by the positive correlative relationships with other measured morphological parameters. A stronger dependence has been found in the root collar diameter, especially with the quality index, so it can be recommended as a good indicator of the quality of the one-year old sessile oak seedlings. The quality index has been confirmed as the most comprehensive morphological indicator of the seedling quality.

AB - Black pine forests of the Western Balkans constitute a significant complex of azonally and orographically-edaphically conditioned forests, on the ophiolite massifs of central and eastern Bosnia, as well as western and, to a certain extent, central Serbia. CA and Cluster analysis showed that there was no overlap in the floristic composition, which means that there are significant differences between the studied stands Stands in Bosnia and Herzegovina (B&H) are floristically richer with 152 taxa recorded, while stands in Serbia had 82 taxa recorded. On the territory of B&H, communities grow under the conditions of maritime and humid climate; while in Serbia they grow in continental climate with less rainfall and significant exposure to sub-Mediterranean weather. In black pine forests in B&H two types of soil were described: eutric humus-siliceous, and brown soil on serpentinite; while in Serbia, there was only one type - eutric humus-siliceous. No significant differences were found in the spectrum of life forms. In the spectrum of floral elements, mesophilic floral elements (Central and Sub-Atlantic) were dominant on the territory of B & H; while stands in Serbia, were richer in xerophilous floral elements (Mediterranean, Balkan, Balkan-Apennine). Shannon-Wiener index and evenness index showed higher values in B&H.

AB - This paper presents three different methods for beech seed quality testing. The aim of this study is to determine the correlation between the electrical conductivity test, tetrazolium test and hydrogen peroxide treatment. The seed was collected in 12 different seed stands in Serbia that are commonly used for nursery production. The seed sample used for testing was randomly taken from the total amount of the collected seed. The analysis of the obtained results included the calculation of the Pearson correlation coefficient in the statistical software package "Statistica 7". The correlation was determined between the recorded results of the seed weight and the electrical conductivity; the seed weight and the tetrazolium test; the seed weight and the hydrogen peroxide treatment; the electrical conductivity and the tetrazolium test; the electrical conductivity and the hydrogen peroxide treatment; the tetrazolium test and the hydrogen peroxide treatment. Based on the conducted researches it can be concluded that the standardization of the electrical conductivity test using the tetrazolium test and hydrogen peroxide treatment could contribute to a more quality and more comprehensive determination of the beech seed quality for commercial purposes.

Based on the conducted researches it can be concluded that the standardization of the electrical conductivity test using the tetrazolium test and hydrogen peroxide treatment could contribute to a more quality and more comprehensive determination of the beech seed quality for commercial purposes.",

AB - Norway spruce is one of the most important economic species is Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is the species at the edge of its natural range; nevertheless it attains significant growth and yield results. The species is often used for afforestation purposes. In the previous period, 4 progeny tests of Norway spruce were established in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The offspring from 6 natural populations: Han Pijesak 1, Han Pijesak 2, Foca, Potoci, Olovo and Knezevo were build-in the progeny tests. In 2016, the samples of Norway spruce from 2 progeny tests: Srebrenica and Drinic were collected. In total, 360 samples were collected. DNA isolation was done according to Dumoline et al. (1990). For assessment of genetic differences among populations, co-dominant nSSR microsatellite system had been used. The number of effective alleles ranged from 7.78 in the population Potoci up to 15 in the population Knezevo, the average number of alleles was 13. The observed heterozygosity ranged from 0.61 for the population Han Pijesak 2 up to 0.68 for population Knezevo. The average observed heterozygosity was 0.65. Fixation index was in the range from -0.073 in the population Potoci, to 0.030 for the population Han Pijesak 2. The average value of Wright fixation index is -0.007. The average fixation index indicates the existence of a very small number of homozygotes. Concerning the variability among populations it has been concluded that the total level of genetic differentiation among populations was very low (FST= 0.026). The result of Nei's genetic distance shows that the populations Olovo and Potoci are separated from other populations. The results obtained by genetic markers, in addition with other, morphological and physiological markers will be the basis for the further investigation of Norway spruce adaptability and possibility for the transfer of genetic material in light of climate changes.

AB - In this paper are presented results of the analysis of inter-line variability of morphometric characters of Bald cypress juvenile seedlings at the level of 20 half-sib lines. Obtained results contribute to better understanding of relationship of analyzed characters, as well as the influence of analyzed characters to the differentiation of half-sib lines. Based on these results, differences were observed in the values of the analyzed characters for each half-sib line individually. The determined values of seedlings' size indicate good genetic and adaptive potential of this species, which can be considered as a starting point for the mass production of quality planting material and its use in Serbia.

AB - The paper presents the results of the study performed with aims to determine the presence and diversity of Phytophthora species on maple trees in Serbia. Due to high aggressiveness and their multicyclic nature, presence of these pathogens is posing significant threat to forestry and biodiversity. In total, 29 samples of water, soil and tissues were taken from 10 different localities, and six different maple hosts were tested. After the isolation tests, 17 samples from five different maple hosts were positive for the presence of Phytophthora spp., and 31 isolates were obtained. After the detailed morphological and physiological classification, four distinct groups of isolates were separated. DNA was extracted from selected representative isolates and molecular identification with sequencing of ITS region was performed. Used ITS4 and ITS6 primers successfully amplified the genomic DNA of chosen isolates and morphological identification of obtained isolates was confirmed after the sequencing. Four different Phytophthora species were detected, including P. cactorum, P. gonapodyides, P. plurivora and P. lacustris. The most common isolated species was homothallic, and with very variable and semipapillate sporangia, P. plurivora with 22 obtained isolates. This is the first report of P. plurivora and P. gonapodyides on A. campestre, P. plurivora and P. lacustris on Acer heldreichii and first report of P. lacustris on A. pseudoplatanus and A. tataricum in Serbia.

AB - During the last several years, a significant decline of different forests in
Serbia was recorded. The decline is more widespread in conifer stands, but
occurence of decline was recorded in broadleaved forest stands as well. These
declines are the result of abiotic, biotic and anthropogenic factors.
According to the studies performed so far in Serbia, the predisposing factor
were droughts during the 2012 and 2013 vegetation periods that caused
physiological weakness of the trees. Among the biotic factors, the most
important are fungi (mainly root rot, but rot fungi, and needle diseases) and
insects (bark beetles in conifer species) and defoliators in broadleaved
species). [Projekat Ministarstva nauke Republike Srbije, br. TR 37008 i br.

AB - In this paper are presented the results of an analysis of intrapopulation variability using morphometric markers of 20 Bald cypress test trees originating from seed stand S 01.10.01.01 near Backa Palanka. The morphometric characters of cones (length, width and number of grains) and seedlings (root collar diameter and height of seedling) that were produced by this seed were analyzed. A mutual biological similarity or distance of mother trees depending on the analyzed characters was tested. The determined values of the dimensions of cones and seedlings indicate the good genetic and adaptive potential of this species, which can be a starting point for the mass production of Bald cypress seed and planting materials in Serbia.

AB - A great part of the genetic variation and the potentials of Serbian spruce natural populations have been incorporated in several plantations in the Western Serbia at the site Quercetum fraineto-cerris s.l., Salicetum fragillis s.l and Pinetum nigre s.l. and in other similar occurrences In this way, it becomes much more available for the research and future utilization. The intensive research of the plantations started by the classification of trees into phenogroups which were considered to be significant for forestry and horticulture. The differences between flowering years, plantations and individual trees in the regularity and abundance of micro- and macro-strobiles are major indicators f genetic variability in the reproductive cycle of Serbian spruce. The interaction of environmental characteristics and genotypes of extreme and average trees illustrate the reproductive ability of Serbian spruce on different sites and indicates that this species achieves the coenological and not the ecological optimum at its natural sites. Application of genetic/selection programmes can lead to the production of planting stock of desired and defined properties, which could survive the stress environmental factors, thanks to its morphological and physiological properties.

AB - Background and Purpose: Knowledge of the interaction between plant and climatic conditions is of great importance in establishment of new forests, especially in the introduction. Taxodium is an allochthonous species in Europe and this paper presents the data on the success of its introduction and adaptability to site conditions.
Material and Methods: For the analysis of the climate characteristics in Bačka Palanka have been used the data of the Republic Hydrometeorological Service of Serbia for the period 1981-2010 regarding meteorological station Rimski Šančevi. Dendrometric analysis was performed on the dominant trees of Taxodium by taking an increment core at breast height using Pressler drill. On the increment cores was measured diameter increment per each year of the observed period. By the regression analysis was determined the correlation between the diameter increment and climate elements.
Results and Conclusion: By research of influence of climate factors on the diameter increment of Taxodium trees can be concluded that with increasing of values of mean annual temperature and mean temperature during the growing season comes to a reduction in size of the diameter increment. The increase of the quantity of precipitation over a year, particularly during the growing season, leads to the increase of the diameter increment, and vice versa.

Mladenovic Drinic (2011): Interpopulation genetic-ecological variation of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) in Serbia. - Genetika, Vol 43, No. 1, 1 - 18. The genetic-ecological variation of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) in Serbia was studied in the populations at five localities in western and south-western Serbia. Three groups of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) populations were differentiated based on genetic research (seed protein analysis) and plant community research. The first group consists of Scots pine populations on Sargan (FMU "Sargan") and on Tara (FMU "Kaluderske Bare"), where the forests belong to the community of Scots pine and Austrian pine (Pinetum sylvestris-nigrae Pavlovic 1951). The second group covers the localities Stolovi (FMU "Radocelo-Crepuljnik") and Zlatar (FMU "Zlatar I"), where the forests belong to the community of Scots pine and spruce (Piceo abietis-Pinetum sylvestris Stefanovic 1960). The third group comprises the Scots pine population on Pester (FMU "Dubocica-Bare") which belongs to the community of Scots pine with erica (Erico-Pinetum sylvestris Stefanovic 1963). Cluster analysis was performed on the basis of seed protein data and showed that there are three groups of Scots pine populations. The three populations coincide with plant communities. The community of Scots pine with erica (Erico-Pinetum sylvestris Stefanovic 1963) recorded on Pester at the locality "Dubocica-Bare" in the area of FE "Golija" Ivanjica, is a special Scots pine population displayed at the greatest distance from all other populations in the cluster analysis dendrogram.

AB - The ability of random amplified polymorphic DNA (RAPD) to distinguish among populations of Austrian pine from Serbia was evaluated. Ten arbitrary 10mer primers employed in the analysis produced 113 fragments of which 100 were polymorphic (88.5%). All populations had specific RAPD phenotypes. Certain rare and genotype specific bands were identified which could be effectively used to distinguish the populations. Polymorphism in RAPD markers among P. nigra population was high and sufficient to distinguish each of the populations. The results obtained suggest that RAPD markers are valuable for the genetic diversity estimation in Finns nigra and for the study of the divergence among populations.

AB - Isajev V., V. Ivetic, A. Lucic, and Lj. Rakonjac (2009): Gene pool conservation and tree improvement in Serbia.- Genetika, Vol. 41, No. 3, 309-327. This paper presents the concepts applied in the gene pool conservation and tree improvement in Serbia. Gene pool conservation of tree species in Serbia includes a series of activities aiming at the sustainability and protection of genetic and species variability. This implies the investigation of genetic resources and their identification through the research of the genetic structure and the breeding system of individual species. Paper also includes the study of intra- and inter-population variability in experiments - provenance tests, progeny tests, half- and full-sib lines, etc. The increased use of the genetic potential in tree improvement in Serbia should be intensified by the following activities: improvement of production of normal forest seed, application of the concept of new selections directed primarily to the improvement of only one character, because in that case the result would be certain. establishment and management of seed orchards as specialised plantations for long-term production of genetically good-quality forest seeds, and the shortening of the improvement process by introducing new techniques and methods (molecular markers, somaclonal variation, genetic engineering, protoplast fusion, micropropagation, etc.).

The increased use of the genetic potential in tree improvement in Serbia should be intensified by the following activities: improvement of production of normal forest seed, application of the concept of new selections directed primarily to the improvement of only one character, because in that case the result would be certain. establishment and management of seed orchards as specialised plantations for long-term production of genetically good-quality forest seeds, and the shortening of the improvement process by introducing new techniques and methods (molecular markers, somaclonal variation, genetic engineering, protoplast fusion, micropropagation, etc.).",
