AB - An advanced flexible programming methodology for CNC woodworking machines was developed. As the research starting base, a three-axis CNC woodworking machine was used. The developed methodology is proposed for programming, simulation, postprocessing, and machining by woodworking machine. This flexible programming method integrates the standard programming based on CAD, CAD/CAM systems, and STEP-NC protocol through different output files, enabling data interoperability during the realization of the machining tasks. The control system for the machine is configured based on the open-architecture software LinuxCNC to verify the flexible programming method and the results obtained. Programming verification was realized by simulation on a configured virtual machine in different programming environments and finally on a virtual machine integrated with the control system. The results obtained from the study were evaluated comparatively.

AB - This article aims to investigate the mechanical characteristics of specimens fabricated using Selective Laser Sintering technology. The research covers flexural specimens, produced by PA12 materials. CAD model dimensions were selected according to the ISO 178 standard, and the chosen specimen geometry is 96 x 8 x 4 [mm] in bulk. All specimens were produced using a specialized machine Fuse 1 (FormLabs, Summerville, MA). Four specimen batches were produced, each with a different printing orientation (i.e. vertical and horizontal) and location on the printing plate (i.e. in the middle and on the edge of the powder bed). The specimens are tested using a Shimadzu universal machine for testing the mechanical characteristics of materials, AGS-X 100 kN, with a unique additional tool for testing 3-point bending specimens.

AB - This study proposes a reconfigurable open architecture control system for the Computer Numerical Control (CNC) woodworking educational machine tool called "EMCO F1 CNC". On this machine physical hardware reconfiguration (spindle position can be vertical and horizontal) is possible. The idea was to develop a control system that would follow the configuration changes of the machine tool. The educational character of the machine and its reconfigurability demand possibilities for machining programme simulations in order to determine optimal workpiece position in the workspace and programme verification. Those are the reasons for developing a virtual machine tool integrated with the control system as a digital twin. The study presents a novel methodology for the development of control systems, merging the concept of "virtual commissioning" with iterative error-driven processes. The objective was to develop a dynamic control system capable of promptly adjusting to kinematics changes in real time. In a wood machining experiment, a test workpiece for machine tools for both machine configurations verified the operation of the developed control system.

AB - This study examines the possible utilization of machine learning and decision-making in the woodworking sector. This refers to the recognition of certain sounds produced during tool idling. The physical and geometric properties of the circular saw blade result in different noises being generated during idling. It was assumed that the respective circular saw blades can be recognized by these noises. The noises of three different circular saw blades were examined while idling at the same speed. In order to obtain useful data for the deep learning process, the coarse signals were subjected to frequency analysis. A total of 240 noise samples were taken for each circular saw blade and later subjected to signal processing. Frequency-power spectra were created using a custom program in Matlab Campus Edition software, such as for the spectrograms. A short Fourier transform was used to create the average spectral density plot using self-made software. The input data for the deep learning network was created in Matlab using a custom program. The GoogleNet deep learning network was used as a data classifier. After training the network, an accuracy of 97.5% was achieved in recognizing circular saw blades.

AB - Non-contact process monitoring could be a powerful tool to prevent tool misuse, detect wood species, detect tool dullness and reduce electrical energy consumption-all of which could reduce production costs. The aim of this study is to identify recognizable patterns in the sound signals produced during the circular sawing of two different wood species-beech (Fagus moesiaca) and fir (Abies alba)-and to classify them in order to obtain an intelligent machining process capable of recognizing the wood species being machined. These two wood species were selected for this study due to their morphological, physical and mechanical differences. The cutting power was also recorded during the process and measured indirectly via the motor power used. A sound signal can easily be converted into an image (spectrogram), which is suitable as a data basis for the deep learning process. Several neural networks were used to classify the sounds. In order to prepare the raw audio signal for machine learning using image recognition, it was processed in several steps. The relationship between the audio and the recorded cutting power was also investigated and found to be strongly correlated, but only for audio frequencies up to 4500 Hz. Based on the results and further analysis, the classification accuracy for wood species identification varied between 98% for MobileNetV2 and 94% for the InceptionV3 deep learning network.

AB - Distributions of the modulus of elasticity (MOE) and modulus of rupture (MOR) were characterized at three loading rates for small clear beech specimens in static bending. The correlation between MOE and MOR for all three loading rates was significant, but it weakened with increasing load rates. The analysis of the characteristics of empirical distributions, as well as the preliminary selection of the theoretical distributions for MOE and MOR, were performed on the basis of L-moments and L-moment diagrams. According to the standard for testing small specimens, MOE and MOR are determined as the arithmetic mean of the sample. Usage of the arithmetic mean is justified when the analyzed quantity is symmetrically distributed. It was found that the distribution of MOE and MOR is not always symmetric. The loading rate influences the shapes of the MOE and MOR empirical distributions, and consequently the choice of theoretical distribution. The general extreme value distribution stood out as the best one for both MOE and MOR, regardless of the loading rate, and the second overall ranked distribution is the three-parameter Weibull distribution. The loading rate affected the value of the fifth percentile in MOR, when determined from both the empirical and theoretical distributions.

AB - As Serbia is currently dependent almost entirely on its own forest resources, consumption of raw wood biomass, for all purposes, should be limited within current boundaries, about 9,000,000 m3. This situation requires from the wood processing industry to be responsible for the raw material and to reduce energy consumption and environmental pollution at all stages of the life cycle to a minimum. This also applies to the production of wood pellets, which are considered as a (nearly) purely renewable fuel and one of the potential substitutes for fossil fuels for heat production. The attention of this paper was paid to the wood pellet production, because this segment has the greatest impact on overall energy consumption and the influence on the environment in wood pellets life cycle. For the necessary calculations the “GHG Balance of Pellet Production” program with some upgrades, was used. The analysis showed that the investigated Serbian pellet plants, for different reasons, used more raw material and energy for production of 1 ton of pellets than plants elsewhere in Europe and America. In order to change this situation several different improvement methods have been examined and appropriate solutions suggested. The analysis of possible solutions showed that, if the proposed measures were implemented, the possible raw material would be between 7 and 10%. The analysis of possible solutions showed that, if the proposed measures were implemented, the following savings could be achieved: savings in wood raw materials between 7 and 10%, energy savings 12% and reduction in greenhouse gas emissions 23–45%.

AB - This article presents an attempt to estimate the nonlinear, multivariable dependence between the main (tangential) cutting force (F-C) and the processing parameters and moduli of elasticity of oak wood (Quercus robur) during peripheral milling with a straight edge. The analysis indicated that the tangential force (F-C) was affected by cutting depth (c(D)), feed rate per tooth (f(Z)), rake angle (gamma(F)), elastic modulus by stretching along the grain (E-SA), elastic modulus by stretching perpendicular to the grain (E-SP), elastic modulus by compression along the grain (E-CA), and the elastic modulus by compression perpendicular to the grain (E-CP). It was found that the elastic moduli (E-SA, E-SP, E-CA, E-CP) very well described the mechanical properties of processed wood. Several interactions between the examined parameters (namely, E-SA.gamma(F), E-SP.gamma(F), E-CP.gamma(F), f(Z.)gamma(F), and f(Z).c(D)) were confirmed in the developed relationship F-C = f(E-SA, E-SP, E-CA, E-CP, f(Z), c(D),gamma(F)).

AB - A sound or a noise that accompanies wood machining processes is introduced by the tool rotation itself, by the friction of moving machine parts, or by wood-tool interaction. The sounds generated during machining with a circular saw could be analysed in order to monitor and possibly control the cutting process. Applying altered cutting parameters while cutting beech wood (Fagus sylvatica L.), which is the most common wood species in the Republic of Serbia, caused acoustic emissions that could be analysed throughout corresponding spectra. As shown in previous studies, altering the cutting parameters, e.g., the feed speed and tool override, resulted in variations in power consumption, surface roughness, and acoustic emission (or acoustic pressure). The aim of this paper was to provide a possible correlation between the applied cutting parameters and the acoustic emission spectra with respect to consumed power and the state of the machined surface. Along with acoustic emissions, the power consumption and surface roughness data were also acquired in order to make a possible relationship. By associating the idle circular saw acoustic spectra with background noise and comparing them with those obtained during machining, it was possible to indicate spectrum areas of particular interest for further analysis.

AB - The paper presents the results of investigations performed in the peripheral milling of oak wood (Quercus robur), where the impact of cutting regime elements and tool geometry on the cutting force is analyzed. A large-scale experiment was conducted to implement the obtained results in developing a reliable analytical and simulation model for analyzing and predicting the cutting forces, depending on the feed rate, the milling depth and the tool rake angle. The generated mathematical model is adequate and describes accurately enough the dependence of the cutting forces upon the selected impact factors in the adopted test conditions. The evaluation of the model parameters significance indicates a significant impact of feed rate and milling depth, whereas tool rake angle does not show any significant impact in this case. The developed mathematical model can be employed in manufacturing conditions as an indicator of wood and wood-based materials machinability.

AB - The aim of investigations was to determine whether the tested models for calculating forces in wood cutting, set up under strictly controlled laboratory conditions, can yield sufficiently accurate results for predicting wood behavior in real cutting conditions. Tests were carried out on oak wood (Quercus robur). On the basis of measured values for the required cutting power, cutting forces were calculated and used for comparison by applying the method of coefficient (Kreljak's model) and Axelsson's model. The analysis indicated that there is not a result, but there is similarity in the curve shape, i.e. changes in measured values are followed by corresponding changes in calculated values. It can be inferred that analyzed models are not suitable for the cutting forces quantification, but could serve for comparing different cutting modes. More accurate modeling of the cutting process requires, besides physical, wood mechanical properties as well.

AB - Two measuring methods (direct and indirect) for peripheral milling cutting force, with the aim of machinability examination of the oak wood, are presented in this paper. Extensively research was performed with over 450 measurements of cutting forces and cutting power. Measurements were conducted for different cutting depths, feed rates and cutting tool geometry. Very strong linear dependence between the peripheral cutting forces calculated upon model values of cutting power (F-om*) and peripheral milling force model values (F-om), was established by the means of comparative analysis. Latter is proved by high value of determination coefficient, which amounted to 0,92. Furthermore, it has been proven that there is the same trend for both measuring methods of peripheral forces, taking into consideration that direct method results show average 23% higher values than those gained using indirect method.

AB - More advanced approach in the wood machining requires constant monitoring of the cutting process in real time. Such techniques can be provided by measuring different process outputs. The amount of heat generated during cutting, cutting forces, power consumed are common examples of cutting process output. The specific construction and the shape characteristics of the circular saw indicate possible relationship between the power consumption, acoustic emission and the cutting process progress. The results obtained in this paper for the power consumption and the acoustic emission spectrum analysis strongly suggest dependence of the former to the tool override. The intention of this paper is to compare the results obtained from already existing, but slightly altered, technique of the power measurement and one still developing, the sound analysis. The actual environmental conditions performed in the research, incorporating auxiliary systems, such as exhauster installation, had to bring the results of the conducted research to the point of practical implementation. The utilization of the acoustic emission analysis as an instrument for fast determination of the consumed power during circular saw cutting of the laminated particle board might become powerful indicator of the state of materials involved in the cutting process, both the tool and the wood based board. The results presented would clearly indicate the possibility of such implementation of the frequency and spectrum sound analysis.

AB - The research of this doctoral dissertation was conducted in the domain of improvement of the knowledge on the properties and functions characterizing the machinability of common oak (Quercus robur) wood during peripheral milling. The main aim of this research was to establish a methodology for determining the machinability of various tree species. The elements of milling considered in this thesis are feed rate and cutting depth. The investigations were carried out for a variety of tool geometries. The criteria for the assessment of the machinability of wood are cutting power, cutting forces and the quality of the processed surface (its roughness and waviness). The research focused on the development of a reliable analytical and simulation model for the analysis and prediction of the cutting power and cutting forces of longitudinal milling, as well as the quality of a surface processed by that machining operation. The basic hypothesis was that different technological parameters of processing result in different amounts of energy needed for cutting, as well as different surface qualities at the same cutting speed. The method of total orthogonal experimental plans was used as the mathematical model for the investigation of the machinability criteria. The developed mathematical model was used for determining the dependence of the parameters of cutting power, cutting forces and quality of the processed surface on the cutting regime and tool geometry. The proposed model proved to be adequate, as it describes the dependence of the examined machinability criteria on the selected impact factors with sufficient accuracy under the experimental conditions adopted in this research. In practice, this model can be applied to a corresponding real-world process of peripheral milling processing, as well as for varied input factors.

AB - The paper presents results of techno-economic analysis of using wood residues from wood industry for CHP (combined heat and power). The aim was to determine the economic feasibility of CHP in Serbia in the light of newly adopted feed in tariffs. In the first part, costs of electricity production are calculated for five different types of CHP technology which could meet the needs of wood industry in Serbia. In the second part of the paper, sawmill wood processing and pellet production were taken into consideration. First, we found that the installation of CHP in small capacity sawmills (about 10,000 m(3)/year) is not economically justified. The main reasons are high investments in micro CHP (up to 100 kW(el)) per kW of power. Second, the approximate electricity production costs in the potential CHP installations in pellet factory with capacity about 50,000 tonne per year is only slightly lower than the offered purchase price. However, advancement in CHP technologies and increase of the number of implemented projects should lead to a drop of equipment prices. Regardless of the price increase of raw materials and labour, this drop will have a significant impact on the reduction of total costs of electricity generation with CHP becoming more attractive to investors.
