AB - This study analyses the supply of wooden pallets to the EU-27 market, paying particular attention to the importance of non-EU-27 countries as suppliers. The importance of South-East European countries, as non-EU-27 countries, in the supply of wooden pallets to the EU-27 market was specifically analyzed. The study focuses on the period 2002-2022. In addition to the trade volume, the import value of wooden pallets into the EU-27 from non-EU-27 countries was also analyzed. To a limited extent, the types and characteristics of wooden pallets most commonly used on the EU-27 market were analyzed. Wooden pallets are subject to the EU Timber Regulation, i.e. the new EU Deforestation Regulation, which was adopted last year.

AB - Wooden toys, which have a very long history, are nowadays the subject of increased demand and relevance since ecological products are gaining ever more importance and value in society. This is the reason why wooden toys were chosen as the subject of this research, while special attention was paid to wooden puzzles. The aim of this research was to determine the trade volume in these products on the EU market in the period 2000-2021, the countries that are the most important for the supply of wooden toys, as well as the countries that are the biggest importers of these products. In addition to the above, another aim of this research was to identify the regulations governing the marketing of toys on the EU market. Toys, including wooden ones, that are placed on the EU market must be produced in accordance with the requirement of the toy safety Directive 2009/48/EC and standard EN 71. They have to have the CE mark and accompanying CE documentation. In addition, toys must be produced in accordance with the requirements of the REACH regulation that restricts the use of heavy metals in the product, i.e. its packaging. Wooden toys are not subject to the European Union Timber Regulation (EUTR).

AB - At a time when there is extremely high pressure on all kinds of resources on Earth, the issue of product lifetime is becoming increasingly important. That is why the linear economy, which is based on the concept of using the product, and throwing it away, has long since begun to give way to the circular economy. The circular economy is not a new concept of business in the production of wooden floors. For many years, wooden floors have been made from antique wood, i.e. over a hundred years old wood. Antique wood originating from dilapidated housing facilities, barns, warehouses, military barracks is most often used for the production of floors. In addition, thanks to its technical characteristics, wood flooring can be repaired several times, which prolongs its lifetime. Being in accordance with the principles of the circular economy and raising the awareness of the population about environmental protection, antique wood floorings are nowadays better positioned on the market.

AB - Serbia is one of the few European countries that does not keep official statistics and does not have data on heating degree days. A heating degree day (HDD) represents a measure to quantify the energy needs for heating a building. In order to create a database, six meteorological stations in Serbia had been selected, for which the heating degree days were calculated for every year in the period 2010-2018. The months with the highest values of heating degree days were also determined for each year of the analyzed period. In addition to the annual level, heating degree days in the heating seasons over the analyzed period were calculated for the six selected stations, as well as the length and the average air temperature of each heating season. In Serbia, heating season officially lasts from October 15 to April 15. To determine the influence of the calculated annual heating degree days on fuelwood consumption in households in Serbia, over the period 2010-2018, multiple econometric models were formulated. The influence of the annual values of heating degree days on fuelwood consumption for household space heating in Slovenia and Croatia was analyzed, as well. The analysis of energy consumption in the households of the selected countries showed that wood fuels are mostly used for heating, primarily fuelwood. This is the reason why this type of fuel was selected for the research.

AB - YThe research presents the results of a study of the functional dependence of fuelwood consumption in households in Serbia, Slovenia and Croatia, on the change in heating degree days in their capitals. The research covers the 2010-2018 period. Simple econometric models were formulated to determine the form of the functional dependency. In addition to being the capitals, Belgrade, Zagreb and Ljubljana are also the largest cities in Serbia, Croatia and Slovenia. Accordingly, it is assumed that they have a significant influence on fuelwood consumption in households in these countries. Additionally, the temperate continental climate prevails in all three cities, January being the coldest and July the warmest month of the year. Similar climatic conditions also served for a comparative analysis of the length and average air temperatures of heating seasons in Belgrade, Zagreb and Ljubljana.

Although production in the EU satisfies most of the market needs, significant amount of wood doors and windows are imported from non-EU countries every year. Among these, China distinguishes itself from other member countries, as one of the EU's most significant foreign trade partners for most categories of wood products. For this reason, the paper represents the analysis of the role of China in the EU market supply with wood doors and windows. Except for the products listed above, the paper also deals with the role of China in the EU market supply with PVC and aluminum doors and windows. The reason for expending the research is that these products represent the biggest competition to wood windows and doors. Special attention was paid to the relevant European technical standards, which specify the values of particular properties of windows and doors.

AB - At the European Union market of clothes hangers of wood, in the period 2007-2017, important increase in trading volume was been achieved. Besides increase in external trade, internal trade increase was been achieved, too. The most important foreign trade partner of the Union was China, from which the import value of more than 100 million was achieved during 2015. For market supply in the Union, the most important among the member countries were: Poland, the Netherlands, Germany and Spain, and since 2013 Romania. Increase in the use of clothes hangers of wood at EU-28 market is a clear indicator of changes in customer awareness, so instead of cheap plastic hangers, they decide to buy more expensive ones of wood. Continuous emphasis in the environmental properties of wood, as natural material, has contributed to this, which resulted in the increase of its use. Also, another important parameter which influences trading volume of these products at the European Union market, is that EUTR, which came into effect on March 1, 2013, does not apply to clothes hangers of wood.

AB - High degree of energy dependence of certain European countries on the import of fossil fuels, the large consumption of these fuels globally, high CO2 emissions which occur during their combustion and increasingly expressed climate changes are some of the main reasons that have initiated more intensive use of renewable sources of energy in recent years. For this reason wood fuels, as a renewable energy source, have gained a special significance for substituting fossil fuels and providing the needed amount of energy to meet the needs of the global population. Global tendencies in this area did not bypass Serbia, thus certain scenarios of fossil fuels substitution are analyzed in this paper. Wood pellets are selected as a substitution fuel, the production and consumption of which have been increasing in Serbia in recent years. In addition to determining the market potential for this type of wood fuel and actual amounts of fossil fuels for the substitution, economic and environmental effects of the proposed substitution scenarios are analyzed in the paper.

AB - Due to its multiannual use and large surface on which it is placed, wood flooring has an exceptional impact on the health of people who spend time in the rooms in which it is placed. Because of this, materials containing cancerous and mutagenic substances or agents which have high emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOC emissions) during their use must not be used for flooring production. In order to prove that wood flooring does not have a harmful effect on the environment or human health during the use, adequate eco certifications have been created in previous decades. In Europe, the following eco certifications are mostly used for this product type: Nordic Swan, German Blue Angel and Natureplus, Austrian UZ and EU eco certification.

Eco certified appliances are characterized by high energy efficiency and low emission of harmful gasses, and these values are significantly stricter than the values permitted in relevant standards for the quality of wood fuels burning appliances. In certain European countries, eco certification of wood fuels burning appliances and possession of eco label is a precondition for receiving subsidies for purchasing new appliances for wood fuels burning.

Eco certificates confirm that by using, or combusting wood fuels no gas emissions occur that might have harmful effect on environment. Apart from fuels, the analysis included eco certification of wood fuels burning appliances as well, since their characterictics also impact combustion quality and composition of gas emissions generated in that process. By applying this type of certificates, consumers are enabled to have direct impact on environment protection and climate change mitigation by selecting eco products.

AB - Primary wood processing and secondary furniture production are strategic sectors in most western Balkan countries with regard to contribution to gross domestic product, exports, and employment. After abandoning a socialist business system in the post-Yugoslavia era, all countries in the region have developed transitional reforms to become free-market economies. Some of these reforms include changes in ownership structure, recapitalization and modernization, adapting to meet import standards of developed countries, and developing strategic linkages with supply-chain counterparts in developed countries. This article contains the results of research conducted on the current situation in primary wood processing and furniture industries in seven western Balkan countries. A common characteristic of these sectors across all countries is the century-long tradition of forestry and forest utilization. The development of these sectors will require sustainable management of the region's rich forest resources, political and economic systems that are transparent and market driven, as well as investments in production technology and employee training.
