The study of weeds in the containers with spruce seedlings is an attempt to identify the different occurrences of weeds in different substrates, but also to identify the demands of weed control. Spruce seeds were sown in containers with different substrates. Three spruce seeds were sown in each container cell. The containers were filled with eight different soil mixtures in order to find out the most optimal substrate for the production of spruce seedlings. The aim of this study was to monitor the weeds in different substrates. The number and character of weed species provides significant data on the need of spruce seedling protection against weeds in the study substrates. In the nursery production of spruce, soil infection with weed species points to the additional tending operations, i.e. weed removal or treatment with chemicals. The most frequent weeds in the containers with spruce are Stellarla media L., Setaria viridis L., Trifolium sp., etc. The greatest number of weeds was recorded in the containers with garden soil. Of course, depending on the occurrence of weed species, weed control is also most necessary in the containers with garden soil. The suppression of weeds in the containers with spruce, make its production more expensive. If we take into account also the considerably poorer intensity of spruce germination and the damage of spruce seedlings during the operations of weed removal from the containers, the use of chemicals in weed control, in our opinion, is not indispensable during the period when spruce seedlings are in the containers. It is very justified to conclude that, in the production of spruce seedlings, it is economically feasible to use the prepared soil mixtures and pure peat.en
