Measurement of Water Drop Sizes Generated by a Dripping Rainfall Simulator with Drippers in the Form of Hypodermic Needles

AB  - Dripping rainfall simulators (DRS) for soil research generate water drops with different types of drippers, but metal tubes are most commonly used, often in the form of hypodermic needles. However, scientific papers using dripping rainfall simulators are often incomplete in terms of data on hypodermic needle characteristics, as well as data on drops produced by hypodermic needles under different water pressures. This study determines which drop sizes and dripping speeds are generated by various hypodermic needles at different water pressures. For the purpose of this study, a dripping rainfall simulator was designed and constructed for laboratory use. Water drops were generated with 11 different needles, ranging in size from 16 G to 32 G (tube gauge number), at different water pressures. Measured water drop sizes ranged from 1.42 to 3.69 mm at a dripping speed between 10 and 360 drops per minute and water head from 14 to over 1970 mm. Measured drop sizes, supplemented with data from previous studies, provided information on the relation between drop sizes and the size of the hypodermic needles. Van Boxel's numerical model provided estimations of the fall velocity for different drop diameters and their kinetic energy for falling heights up to 11.5 m. The results of this research can be used to design dripping rainfall simulators for soil research.

Taxonomic and ecological characteristics of rosemary-leaved willow (salix rosmarinifolia l.) In Vojvodina region in Serbia

AB  - Rosemary-leaved willow (Salix rosmarinofolia L.) is a rare and protected species in Serbia. The research was based on ecological characteristics of this species (climatic, vegetational and edaphic) as well as its taxonomical characteristics in Vojvodina region -the northern part of Serbia, where two rosemary-leaved willow sites occur (Subotica-Horgos sand and Deliblato sand). The climate is temperate continental. This willow is the dominant species in two ecologically very similar plant communities, Holoschoeno-Salicetum rosmarinifoliae Stjep. Vesel. 1953. in Deliblato sand and Festucetum vaginatae mixtum Gaj. 1986. salicetosum rosmarinifoliae (Mag 1953) Soo 1939 in Subotica-Horgos sand. These communities are strongly xerophilous, when it comes to moisture requirements. They are strongly intolerant to light and they prefer alkaline soils. In relation to warmth, they are mesothermal to thermophilous. Hemicryptophytes are the dominant life form in the spectrum of life forms, followed by phanerophytes and therophytes. Pontic-Central Asian group is the most frequent in the spectrum of floral elements. Two varieties of Salix rosmarinifolia L. are present-var. rosmarinifolia, which dominates in both localities and var. argyotricha. The geological bedrock on both localities is made of sand, and soils belong to Glaysol (Calcaric, Arenic). Fraction of fine sand absolutely dominates, humus content is relatively low, while soil reaction is mildly alkaline. Soils are poorly supplied with phosphorus, while the potassium supply is somewhat better. Occurrence of rusty-grayish zones in deeper soil layer indicates fluctuation in underground water level and reduction-oxidation processes.

AB  - The contemporary geographical distribution and genetic structure of temperate species have been strongly influenced by the climatic oscillations during the Late Quaternary. As spatial genetic reconstructions are often markedly affected by geographically meaningful sample distributions, we focused in our study on the analyses of mtDNA control region sequences of brown hares from different regions in northern, central and south-central Balkans that have so far not been covered, with the aim to delineate the most likely glacial refugia wherefrom the postglacial northward expansion into central Europe has originated. Three major haplogroups ("Anatolia/Middle East", "the Balkans", and "central Europe") were revealed with apparent south-north gradual decrease in molecular diversity indices. Moreover, phylogenetic and demographic history analyses identified the southeastern central Balkans as the putative origin for most populations from the southern and northern Balkans, while populations from central and northwestern Europe have originated from the northern Balkans.
