AB  - Determining Norway maple's traits variation, especially the variation of flowers, in different environments, and isolating superior individuals enables strategic use and prediction of its prospects. In Serbia's natural and urban populations, Norway maple populations were sampled for morphology of the flowers and inflorescence and its sex was determined. Norway maple inflorescence's width and the number of the flowers vary the most and are a mechanism of adaptation to various environments. The sex of flowers, diameter, and the number of petals characterize the species. A negative correlation between the size and the number of flowers in inflorescence and a positive correlation between inflorescence's width and the number of flowers per inflorescence reflects the species' tendency toward the same size of inflorescences. The morphology of flowers in the natural population varies the most. Based on the inflorescence's width, the number of flowers per inflorescence, and the size of flowers of superior individuals, microflora and macroflora cultivars can be isolated. Variations in inflorescences' morphology are partially explained by environmental conditions. The morphology of urban population is not significantly different from the natural populations nor does it stand out in any of the parameters. This species' large morphological variability enables survival in various environments.

Effects of Poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) addition on the curing kinetics of urea-formaldehyde adhesives for particleboards

AB  - Addition of poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) on the performances of ureaformaldehyde (UF) adhesives was evaluated in this work. Three types of UF adhesives were prepared, one without PDDA addition, and two types with PDDA addition of 1 and 3 wt.% per dry UF adhesive mass. These UF adhesive systems were used for producing experimental particleboard panels. The addition of PDDA decreased the thickness swelling of the panel samples, while the internal bond of the particleboards increased significantly only at the highest PDDA content (3 wt.%). Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was applied to address the influence of PDDA on UF adhesive curing kinetics. DSC scans were performed in non-isothermal regimes using different heating rates (5, 10, and 20 degrees C.min(-1)). The activation energy (Ea) of the curing reaction showed slightly lower values for the UF adhesive systems containing PDDA. However, the peak temperatures and enthalpy of reaction did not change significantly. The Kissinger-Akahira-Sunose and Friedman iso-conversional methods were applied to investigate the effects of PDDA addition on the UF adhesive curing process.

AB  - Particles of beech wood were treated with hot water at the temperature of 150 degrees C, during 60 min, prior to the pelleting process. The applied hot water pretreatment affected the chemical composition and heating value of particles. Two groups of pellets, designated as PT 10 and PT 20, were produced from treated beech particles, with the moisture content of particles being 10.5 and 20.5 %, respectively. Pellets from nontreated beech particles (PNT) served as controls to assess the hot water pretreatment effects on the pellet properties. Both, the applied pretreatment, and the particle moisture content, affected properties of the obtained pellets. The heating value of PT 10 ad PT 20 pellets has increased for similar to 6 and 1 %, respectively. The mineral (ash) content in treated pellets decreased for about 24 % in comparison to that in PNT pellets. In addition, the bulk (apparent) density of pellets has increased for 21 % (PT 10) and 10 % (PT 20), as a consequence of the hot water pretreatment of particles. The specific density of PT 10 pellets was for 16 % higher, while the equilibrium moisture content (after conditioning at RH 68 % and 20.1 degrees C) was for about 32 % lower in comparison to the respective properties of PNT pellets.

AB  - Urea-formaldehidni (UF) adheziv je još uvek jedan od najvažnijih adhezivnih sistema u proizvodnji ploča iverica i ploča vlaknatica srednje gustine (MDF). Međutim, nameštaj i elementi enterijera koji sadrže ove proizvode predstavljaju jedan od izvora emisije formaldehida u unutrašnjem prostoru. Prepoznavanje formaldehida kao supstance štetne po zdravlje čoveka imalo je snažan uticaj na sektor proizvodnje ploča na bazi drveta, pošto su se ovi proizvodi našli pod ograničenjima od strane brojnih nacionalnih i međunarodnih regulativa. Shodno tome, ovaj rad predstavlja pregled standarda i regulativa koji danas definišu emisione granice za ploče na bazi drveta, a od značaja su za tržište ovih ploča u Republici Srbiji. Ovde se, takođe, daje i kratak pregled metoda i procedura u proizvodnji ploča na bazi drveta sa veoma niskom ili bez emisije formaldehida.
AB  - The urea-formaldehyde (UF) adhesive is still most important adhesive system in the production of interior grade particleboards and medium density fibreboards (MDF). However, the furniture and interior fitments, incorporating these products, present one of the sources of formaldehyde emission into the indoor air. The recognition of formaldehyde as a substance that presents the risk for a human health had a strong impact on wood-based panels industry, as it came under constrains by the number of national and international regulations. Hence, this paper presents the overview of standards and regulations that define formaldehyde emission limits for wood-based panels today, and of a special interest for a wood-based panels market in the Republic of Serbia. The paper also gives an overview on a possible methods and procedures for the production of wood-based panels with low or no formaldehyde emission.

AB  - Predmet ovog rada je analiza mogućnosti sušenja rezanih elemenata hrasta i jasena sa prisutnom korom drveta na jednoj strani elementa. Osušena je jedna šarža hrastovih i jedna jasenovih elemenata pri čemu je proces vođen daljinskim elektrovlagomerima u sušari, ali je vlažnost određivana i gravimetrijskim metodom. Analizirane su i greške sušenja i njihovi uzroci. Rezultati su pokazali da se konvencionalno sušenje može koristiti za ovu namenu - trajanje je relativno kratko (do 7 dana), a varijacija konačne vlažnosti relativno mala. Osnovni problem je relativno veliki broj zakrivljenih elemenata na kraju sušenja, isključivo onih gde je učešće drveta u odnosu na koru malo. Vrlo visoki koeficijenti aksijalnog utezanja kore (4,5 puta veći od drveta) su uzrok ovih deformacija.
AB  - The subject of this paper is the analysis of the possibility of drying oak and ash elements with the presence of tree bark on one side of the element (bark edge). One batch was dried per species, and the process was controlled by moisture content (MC) probes in the kiln, but also determined by the oven-dry method. Drying defects and their causes were also analyzed. The results showed that conventional drying can be used for this purpose - the duration is relatively short (up to 7 days), and the variation of the final MC is relatively small. The main problem is a relatively large number of crooked elements at the end of drying, particularly those where the share of wood in relation to the bark was small. Very high axial shrinkage coefficients of the bark (4.5 times higher than wood) are the cause of these deformations.

Growth characteristics of one-year-old seedlings of three autochthonous oak species in suboptimal growing conditions

AB  - The paper presents the growth characteristics of one-year-old seedlings of three autochthonous oak species (Fagaceae family): Turkey oak (Quercus cerris L.), Hungarian oak (Quercus frainetto Ten.) and downy oak (Quercus pubescens Willd.) in suboptimal growing conditions. The analyzed oak species are widely distributed in Serbia. One of the most important benefits of oak species is wood production (Hungarian and Turkey oak), and they have a promising role for the use in the future regarding the climate change as all species can be encountered on dry sites. Acorns were collected in the autumn of 2017 in natural stands and a sample of 400 acorns per each oak species was immediately sown in a nursery seedbed in the form of a random block system with four replicates. At the end of 2018, the available sample of seedlings was analyzed morphometrically. The seedlings were classified according to the number of shoot growth flushes into one-flush-growth and multi-flush growth seedlings. Turkey Oak had the highest number of seedlings which also recorded higher values in total height, root collar diameter and number of leaves. These results were obtained on alkaline soil with the presence of weeds and rodents and the absence of irrigating. The presence of multi-flush growth was recorded in all three oak species. Differences between analyzed three oak species exist in these suboptimal conditions. However, in full light conditions, a similar growth pattern was recorded, indicating to the similar adaptability of the species.

AB  - U radu su analizirani morfološki parametri kvaliteta jednogodišnjih sadnica hrasta kitnjaka (Quercus petraea (Matt.) Liebl) i njihovi međusobni odnosi. Na osnovu obavljenih analiza utvrđeno je koji od merenih morfoloških parametara, uz minimalno trošenje vremena i sredstava daje najtačniju procenu kvaliteta jednogodišnjih sadnica. Za sprovedena istraživanja sadnice su proizvedene u rasadniku Instituta za šumarstvo u Beogradu, u ujednačenim uslovima sredine od semena sakupljenog u semenskoj sastojini RS-2-2-qpe-22-169. Sadnice su proizvedene u istoj leji, a uzorak za analize je uzet tako što je leja podeljena na četiri dela i iz svakog dela je metodom slučajnog uzorka uzeto po 30 sadnica. Mereni su sledeći morfološki parametri: prečnik u korenovom vratu, visina sadnica, masa nadzemnog i podzemnog dela sadnica u apsolutno suvom stanju i zapremina korena. Na osnovu izmerenih vrednosti izračunati su odnosi visina:prečnik u korenovom vratu, masa nadzemnog:masa podzemnog dela sadnice i indeks kvaliteta. Visina sadnica i prečnik u korenovom vratu su dobri pokazatelji kvaliteta, što je potvrđeno pozitivnim korelativnim vezama sa ostalim merenim morfološkim parametrima. Jača zavisnost je utvrđena kod prečnika u korenovom vratu, naročito sa indeksom kvaliteta, pa se on može preporučiti kao dobar pokazatelj kvaliteta jednogodišnjih sadnica kitnjaka. Indeks kvaliteta se potvrdio kao najobuhvatniji morfološki pokazatelj kvaliteta sadnica.
AB  - The paper analyzes the morphological quality parameters of one-year-old sessile oak (Quercus petraea (Matt.) Liebl) seedlings and their interrelations. Based on the performed analyzes, it was determined which of the measured morphological parameters, with minimal time and resources spent, gives the most accurate estimate of the quality of one-year old seedlings. For the conducted research, seedlings were produced in the nursery of the Institute of Forestry in Belgrade, in uniform environmental conditions from seed collected in seed stand RS-2-2-qpe-22-169. The seedlings were produced in the same nursery seedbed, and the sample for analysis was taken by dividing the seedbed into four sections and taking 30 seedlings from each section by random sampling. The following morphological parameters were measured: root collar diameter, height of seedlings, weight of above and underground part of seedling in absolutely dry condition and root volume. Based on the measured values, height ratios were calculated as follows: height:root collar diameter, weight of aboveground part of seedling: weight of underground part of seedling, and quality index. The height of the seedlings and root collar diameter are good indicators of quality, which is confirmed by the positive correlative relationships with other measured morphological parameters. A stronger dependence has been found in the root collar diameter, especially with the quality index, so it can be recommended as a good indicator of the quality of the one-year old sessile oak seedlings. The quality index has been confirmed as the most comprehensive morphological indicator of the seedling quality.

Influence of Diameter and Quality of Beech Logs on the Potential Energy of Sawmill Residues

AB  - The influence of log diameter and log quality were studied relative to the potential heat energy produced from wood residue. Research was conducted on beech sawmill logs (30 cm to 49 cm in diameter and 4 m in length) of different qualities. Logs with greater diameters and of better quality increased the amount of products and decreased the amount of residue. A decrease in the diameter and quality of beech logs increased the total energy capacity, ranging between 840 kWh/m(3) (highest quality logs, 40 cm to 49 cm in diameter) and 1,350 kWh/m(3) (lower quality logs, 30 cm to 34 cm in diameter). Drying the lumber produced from logs of small diameters used less than 10% of the potential heating energy. However, logs of 40 cm to 49 cm in diameter increased this usage to 33%. When burner losses and drying energy losses were calculated, there was approximately 430 kWh/m(3) to 960 kWh/m(3) of leftover energy. This could be used for various purposes or it could be sold. The amount of obtained energy was influenced more by log diameter than by the log quality.

AB  - U radu je istraživana visina i broj traka lignuma po mm2 površine kod stabala taksodijuma na dva aluvijalna staništa u Srbiji (Veliko ratno ostrvo i Bačka Palanka). Ukupno 6 stabala (po 3 na oba lokaliteta) je oboreno, a potom su uzeti poprečni preseci (koturovi), iz kojih su načinjeni trajni anatomski preparati. Na ovim preparatima su obavljena sva neophodna merenja. Broj traka lignuma po mm2 površine je određen tako što je u okviru svakog prstena prirasta odabrano po 6 vidnih polja određene površine (po 3 u okviru svake zone), a potom je na osnovu jednostavne proporcije izračunata brojnost traka lignuma po mm2. Visina traka drveta je izračunata brojanjem parenhimskih ćelija koje ih sačinjavaju. Istraživana svojstva traka lignuma merena su u zavisnosti od 3 elementa: kambijalne starosti, visine debla i zone unutar prstena prirasta. Što se tiče međusobnog odnosa broja i visine traka drveta, utvrđeno je da su u odnosu inverzije - veća brojnost traka drveta znači njihovu manju visinu i obratno. Cilj istraživanja je da se ustanovi kako se visina i broj traka lignuma po mm2 menjaju u zavisnosti od tri posmatrana faktora - starosti, visine debla i zone unutar prstena prirasta.

Overall 6 stems (3 at one and 3 at another locality) were harvested. After that discs were made and they served for permanent anatomical preparations making. All necessary measurements were performed on these preparations. Inside each growth ring was selected 6 visible fields (3 at earlyand 3 at latewood zone) and within all fields density of woody rays per mm2 was calculated. According to simple equation number of woody rays per mm2 was determined. As for height of woody rays, it was calculated by parenchyma cells counting. Researched bald cypress features were measured depending on 3 factors: cambial age, stem height and zone inside growth ring. As for relation between number and height of woody rays, there is obvious inverse - greater density of woody rays means they are shorter. The scope of the paper was to establish how height and number of woody rays per mm2 change depending on 3 observed factors - age, stem height and zone inside growth rings.

Technical overview of nuclear microsatellites for Fagus sp., and their utility in F. sylvatica from the central Balkans (Serbia)

AB  - Selectively neutral nuclear microsatellites (SSRs) are available for Fagus sp., and have been used in F. sylvatica, an ecologically and economically most important European Fagus species. We provide a comprehensive technical overview of available Fagus sp. SSRs (185 loci), carry out meta-analysis of loci used in F. sylvatica (62 loci employed in 62 surveys), and validate a set of 16 loci in 45 individuals of this species from the central Balkans (Serbia). Erroneous usage of marker's names/authors is rather frequent, and loci successfully used in a number of studies are characterized by other authors by high prevalence of null alleles and even multilocus amplification products. Frequent occurrence of null alleles at FS4-46, used in 26 surveys to date, most likely indicates a failure to record multiple alleles at this locus. Twelve loci are reliable/informative in F. sylvatica from the Balkans (5-18 alleles/locus, H-E ranging from 0.523 to 0.850), while four loci are characterized by high prevalence of null alleles (sfc0161 and sfc1063) and multilocus amplification products (FS4-46 and Fagsyl_007038). Our findings are important for future population genetics and studies on adaptation of F. sylvatica to its environment, because the latter rely on both selectively neutral and adaptive markers under selection.

AB  - Istraživanja su sprovedena u provenijeničnom testu bukve osnovanom na teritoriji Nastavne baze "Majdanpečka domena" Šumarskog fakulteta Univerziteta u Beogradu. U radu su prikazani rezultati koji se odnose na morfološka i anatomska svojstva peteljke bukve na nivou 8 provenijencija sa područja jugoistočne i srednje Evrope. Što se tiče morfoloških parametara, analizirani su: dužina, širina i debljina peteljke. Od kvantitativnih anatomskih parametara (koje je moguće numerički opisati) istraživani su širina i debljina centralnog cilindra, dok su deskriptivno analizirani sledeći elementi anatomske strukture peteljke: tip, oblik i broj sprovodnih snopića. Na bazi dobijenih vrednosti koeficijenta varijacije, utvrđeno je da najmanju varijabilnost pokazuju dva elementa-širina i debljina peteljke, dok je najveća varijabilnost zabeležena kod dužine peteljke.
AB  - The research was conducted as part of a beech provenance test established in the area of `Majdanpečka domena` Teaching Base of the Faculty of Forestry, University of Belgrade. The paper presents the results on morphological and anatomical features of the beech petiole from 8 provenances originating from southeastern and Central Europe. Morphological parameters included the analysis of the length, width and thickness of the petiole. The quantitative anatomical elements that can be numerically described included the width and thickness of the central cylinder. Some elements related to the anatomical structure of the petiole such as the type, shape and number of vascular bundles were also described. Based on the obtained values of the coefficient of variation, the smallest variability was observed for the width and thickness of the petiole, while the length of the petiole showed the greatest variability.

Proučavana sastojina pripada monodominantnoj šumi hrasta kitnjaka sa trepljastim šašem (Quercetum petraeae caricetosum pilosae Jov. 1975) na ilimerizovanom zemljištu na peščaru. Sastojina je jednodobna, u vreme podmlađivanja starosti 96 godina. Nalazi se na 467 m nadmorske visine, na južnoj do jugozapadnoj ekspoziciji i nagibu terena od 8 o. Ukupan broj stabala je 220 po ha, srednji sastojinski prečnik dg = 34,8 cm, a srednja sastojinska visina hdg = 21,4 m. Sastojina je srednje negovana i okarakterisana kao kvalitetna izdanačka šuma na očuvanom staništu. Na osnovu detaljno proučenih uslova staništa i sastojinskog stanja analizirano je prirodno podmlađivanje, inicirano i usmereno vođeno odgovarajućim uzgojnim merama. Vršena su proučavanja brojnosti trogodišnjeg podmlatka, njegove visine i kvaliteta. Posle izvršenog naknadnog seka oplodne seče vršeno je proučavanje preživljavanja i brojnost četvorogodišnjeg podmlatka, i jednogodišnjeg visinskog prirasta u konkretnim stanišnim i sastojinskim uslovima.
AB  - The paper presents the results of the study of natural regeneration in the vegetative forest of sessile oak in the area of NP`FruškaNP`FruškaGorà. The study stand belongs to the monodominant forest of sessile oak with hairy sedge (Quercetum petraeae caricetosum pilosae Jov. 1975) on illimerized soil on sandstone. The stand is even-aged, aged 96 at the time of regeneration. It is located at 467 m above sea level, with southern to southwestern aspect and the slope of 8 o . The total number of trees is 220 ind. per ha, with the mean stand diameter of dg = 34.8 cm, and the mean stand height of hdg = 21.4 m. The stand is moderately tended and characterized as a good quality coppice forest on a well-preserved site. Based on a detailed study of site conditions and the stand state, we studied the natural regeneration initiated and directed by appropriate silvicultural measures. The number of three-year-old regeneration crop was studied, as well as their height and quality. After the removal cut of regeneration felling had been carried out, we studied the survival rate and the number of four-year-old plants, as well as the annual height increment in concrete site and stand conditions.

AB  - The common pheasant (Phasianus colchicus L. 1758) is an allochtonous game species of great importance to the hunting sector in Serbia. Growing concerns over a decline in its population raise issues about the proper management and hunting of common pheasants. As this research tends to identify the importance of common pheasants to Serbian hunters, the present study is based on a mixed research model combining traditional analyses with social studies on Serbian hunters. The data utilized have been collected from the annual management plans of 272 hunting grounds across Serbia and the interviews with 377 hunters. The results obtained suggest that there are significant differences between the analyzed variables in the management plans examined, which indicates that the pheasant hunting management in Serbia is not harmonized. However, the social studies conducted identify the common pheasant as the most hunted and popular game species with Serbian hunters. Accordingly, the common pheasant hunting and management in Serbia has to be improved in order to meet the hunters' expectations and ensure their satisfaction.

Uporedne karakteristike florističkog sastava šume crnog i šume crnog i belog bora na području Kopaonika

AB  - U radu je vršeno poređenje florističkog sastava šume crnog bora i šume belog i crnog bora na području gazdinske jedinice "Jelensko osoje" na Kopaoniku, na serpentinskoj geološkoj podlozi. Između istraživanih sastojina uočene su sličnosti u florističkom sastavu, ali i značajne razlike. U šumi crnog bora se, kao izdvojena vrsta, našao crni bor (Pinus nigra) u sva tri sprata, a u šumi belog i crnog bora bukva (Fagus moesiaca) i beli bor (Pinus sylvestris). Među izdvojenim vrstama u šumi belog i crnog bora, pored navedenih, našle su se još neke mezofilne i submezofilne vrste (Vicia cracca, Phleum pretense, Erythronium dens-canis). Najveća razlika ogleda se u prisustvu kserofilnijih flornih elemenata (mediteransko-submediteranskih, mediteransko-submediteransko-pontskih i pontsko-mediteransko-submediteranskih). Ova grupa je značajno zastupljenija u šumi crnog bora, nego u šumi belog i crnog bora (20%:14%). Šuma crnog bora ima u svom florističkom sastavu više vrsta karakterističnih za borove šume i termofilne hrastove šume, više livadskih i travnih vrsta, dok zajednica belog i crnog bora sadrži više sciofilnih i acidofilnih vrsta.
AB  - A comparison of the floristic composition of the Austrian pine forest and the forest of Scots and Austrian pines in the area of `Jelensko Osoje` management unit on Mt. Kopaonik on serpentine bedrock was carried out in this study. Similarities were observed in the floral composition of the investigated stands. However, there were significant differences, too. In the Austrian pine forest, the Austrian pine (Pinus nigra) was found to be the most dominant species in all three forest layers, while the beech (Fagus moesiaca) and the Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) distinguished in the forests of Scots and Austrian pines. The greatest difference was observed in the presence of xerophilic floral elements (Mediterranean--Submediterranean, Mediterranean-Submediterranean-Pontic and Pontic-Mediterranean--Submediterranean). This group was significantly more present in the Austrian forest than in the Austrian and Scots pine forest (20%:14%). The floristic composition of the Austrian pine forest had more species typical of pine forests and thermophilic oak forests, more meadow and grassland species, while the Scots and Austrian pine community contained more sciophilic and acidophilic species.

Metoda diferecijalne skenirajuće kalorimetrije (DSC) korišćena je za praćenje reakcije očvršćavanja UF adheziva u smeši sa netretiranim drvnim brašnom (kontrolna serija) i drvnim brašnom dobijenim od različito tretiranog iverja poljskog jasena. Primenjena su tri različita pred-tretmana: tretman rastvorom natrijum karbonata (0,03 g/g apsolutno suvog drveta), tretman rastvorom sirćetne kiseline (0,06 g/g apsolutno suvog drveta) i tretman destilovanom vodom. Rezultati praćenja očvršćavanja različitih adhezivnih sistema nisu ukazali na značajne razlike u temperaturama maksimuma reakcije, kao niti u vrednostima entalpije reakcije. Međutim, relativno niže vrednosti energije aktivacije uočene su kod UF adhezivnih sistema sa drvnim brašnom dobijenim nakon alkalnog i kiselog tretmana (76,64 and 76,92 kJ/mol) u odnosu na UF adhezive sa kontrolnim (netretiranim) drvnim brašnom i drvnim brašnom tretiranim vodom (79,28 and 79,14 kJ/mol). Pored toga, primenjene izo-konverzione metode pokazale su različito ponašanje ispitivanih UF adhezivnih sistema tokom očvršćavanja.
AB  - The influence of Narrow Leaved Ash (Fraxinus angustifolia Vahl. ssp. Pannonica Soo & Simon) pre-treatments on the curing behavior of urea-formaldehyde (UF) adhesive was studied. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was used to monitor the curing reaction of UF adhesive mixed with non-treated wood flour (control series) and wood flour of Narrow leaved Ash obtained after different pre-treatments of wood particles. Three different pre-treatments were applied, one with sodium carbonate solution (0.03 g/g of dry wood), one with acetic acid solution (0.06 g/g of dry wood) and one with distilled water. The curing reaction of different adhesive systems showed no apparent differences in peak temperature values, and there were no significant differences in the enthalpy of the reaction. However, it was assessed that the activation energy has lower values for the UF systems with alkaline and acid treated wood flour (76.64 and 76.92 kJ/mol) in regard to the UF systems with control (untreated) wood flour and water treated wood flour (79.28 and 79.14 kJ/mol). In addition, the application of iso-conversional models have shown different curing behavior of UF adhesive systems.

AB  - In silviculture, the characteristics of growth of seedlings in relation to light conditions are an important indicator of the success of natural regeneration. The paper shows the growth characteristics of one-year-old Hungarian oak seedlings in full light conditions in a field experiment conducted in 2016 in the nursery of the Faculty of Forestry in Belgrade. Four hundred seedlings were analyzed and classified according to the number of shoot growth flushes into three growth types: one-flush growth, two-flush growth and three-flush growth type. Within the analyzed four hundred seedlings, 39.8% belonged to the one-flush growth type, 58.2% to the two-flush growth type, and only 2.0% of the seedlings to the three-flush growth type. The one-flush growth seedlings have less leaves and lower values of height, root collar diameter and total leaf area, but they are characterized by a higher mean height of the primary axis (the height of the first growth flush), compared to the multi-flush growth seedlings. This is pointing out to different growth characteristics in the initial stage of development and during the growing season between different types of seedlings.

AB  - Pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.) is one of the most important deciduous tree species in the Serbian and European forests. Different negative factors limit natural regeneration of pedunculate oak forests, so producing of high quality seedlings becomes imperative to ensure successful forest restoration. This research was conducted with to aim to determine whether acorn size is related to seedlings quality. Acorns were collected from the natural pedunculate oak forest and divided into two groups by their size. Acorns were sown in the spring into plastic containers after five months cold storage. Size of acorns was in the standard species range, though germination was low ( lt  20 %). Germination was more then double in group of large acorns in comparison to group of smaller acorns (19.2 %, respectively 8.6 %). Height and root collar diameter of produced seedlings were lower than seedlings produced in seedbeds in commercial nurseries in Serbia, but it was in range of container produced seedlings in some similar researches. Height to root collar diameter ratio and shoot to root ratio were considered as satisfactory for containerized seedlings. There was not strong correlation between acorn size and seedlings quality attributes.

AB  - U radu su prikazani rezultati istraživanja sprovedenih u okviru evropskog provenijeničnog testa bukve, u Nastavnoj bazi Šumarskog fakulteta u Debelom Lugu. U cilju utvrđivanja međuprovenijenične genetičke varijabilnosti bukve, primenom morfoloških markera, i uporedne analize dobijenih rezultata u dve sukcesivne godine, uzorkovano je po 10 stabala iz svake odabrane provenijencije, sa kojih je sakupljeno po 30 listova (ukupno 300 listova po provenijenciji godišnje). Međuprovenijenične razlike za sve morfološke karakteristike lista bile su statistički značajne i može se pretpostaviti da su rezultat genetičke konstitucije samih provenijencija. Na osnovu uporedne analize morfoloških karakteristika listova bukve iz 13 različitih provenijencija u dve istraživačke godine, konstatovano je da su srednje vrednosti većine analiziranih morfoloških karakteristika bile veće 2017. godine, u poređenju sa rezultatima iz 2016. godine. Ovakvi rezultati bi se mogli objasniti različitim klimatskim uslovima, koji su vladali na području provenijeničnog testa u istraživanim godinama.
AB  - The paper presents the results of the research conducted within the European provenance beech trial, in the Teaching Base of the Faculty of Forestry - Debeli Lug. To assess the inter-provenance genetic variability of beech, using morphological markers, and comparative analysis of the results obtained in two successive years, 10 trees per each selected provenance were sampled. Thirty leaves were collected from each tree (total of 300 leaves per provenance per year). The inter-provenance differences of all morphological leaf characteristics were statistically significant and can be assumed to be the result of the genetic constitution of the provenances themselves. Based on the comparative analysis of the morphological characteristics of beech leaves from 13 different provenances in two research years, it was found that the mean values of most analyzed morphological characteristics were higher in 2017, compared to the results from 2016. Such results could be explained by the different climatic conditions that prevailed in the provenance trial in research years.

abstract = "U radu su prikazani rezultati istraživanja sprovedenih u okviru evropskog provenijeničnog testa bukve, u Nastavnoj bazi Šumarskog fakulteta u Debelom Lugu. U cilju utvrđivanja međuprovenijenične genetičke varijabilnosti bukve, primenom morfoloških markera, i uporedne analize dobijenih rezultata u dve sukcesivne godine, uzorkovano je po 10 stabala iz svake odabrane provenijencije, sa kojih je sakupljeno po 30 listova (ukupno 300 listova po provenijenciji godišnje). Međuprovenijenične razlike za sve morfološke karakteristike lista bile su statistički značajne i može se pretpostaviti da su rezultat genetičke konstitucije samih provenijencija. Na osnovu uporedne analize morfoloških karakteristika listova bukve iz 13 različitih provenijencija u dve istraživačke godine, konstatovano je da su srednje vrednosti većine analiziranih morfoloških karakteristika bile veće 2017. godine, u poređenju sa rezultatima iz 2016. godine. Ovakvi rezultati bi se mogli objasniti različitim klimatskim uslovima, koji su vladali na području provenijeničnog testa u istraživanim godinama., The paper presents the results of the research conducted within the European provenance beech trial, in the Teaching Base of the Faculty of Forestry - Debeli Lug. To assess the inter-provenance genetic variability of beech, using morphological markers, and comparative analysis of the results obtained in two successive years, 10 trees per each selected provenance were sampled. Thirty leaves were collected from each tree (total of 300 leaves per provenance per year). The inter-provenance differences of all morphological leaf characteristics were statistically significant and can be assumed to be the result of the genetic constitution of the provenances themselves. Based on the comparative analysis of the morphological characteristics of beech leaves from 13 different provenances in two research years, it was found that the mean values of most analyzed morphological characteristics were higher in 2017, compared to the results from 2016. Such results could be explained by the different climatic conditions that prevailed in the provenance trial in research years.",

Economic assessment of forest plantations with short rotation: Russia and Serbia experience

AB  - The article presents the economic aspects of growing poplar on plantations in Russia and Serbia. For Russia, the cultivation of poplar on forest plantations with a short turnaround is a promising activity which enables to get NPV 7 202 (sic)/ha, taking into account the risks of forest plantations. In the creation of plantation crops the fundamental role is played by their density. To get timber the density of plantation should be from 3.0 to 5.0 thousand plants per 1 ha. Plantations with a 20-year rotation and planting density of 3.0 thousand plants per 1 ha are the most profitable and less risky ones. Similar results have been obtained on poplar plantations in Serbia. NPV revenues are in a range 11 088 to 13 676 (sic)/ha when growing poplar plantations in Serbia. It is advisable to get not only industrial wood chips, but also wood assortment during the cultivation of poplar plantations with 20-year rotation in the conditions of Serbia. Positive financial effect can be reached in future by lowering the costs of poplar plantations establishing. Costs can be also reduced by finding out the solution in the field of soil preparation for afforestation, working operations which will show the higher level of economic efficient.

AB  - U ovom radu je u dvogodišnjem rasadničkom testu praćena morfološka varijabilnost autohtonih neregistrovanih eksperimentalnih klonova L-12, L-80 i L-100 bele topole i registrovanog referentnog klona Villafranca. Najbolji prijem reznica i preživljavanje ožiljenica tokom dva vegetaciona perioda ustanovljeni su kod klona L-12. Visina ožiljenica ovog klona bila je približna visini ožiljenica klona Villafranca na kraju prvog vegetacionog perioda (ožiljenice tipa 1/1), i nešto manja na kraju drugog vegetacionog perioda (ožiljenice tipa 1/2). Klonovi L-12 i Villafranca, koji su se razlikovali u prečniku na 10 cm od osnove izdanka tokom obe godine, odlikovali su se najvećim vrednostima prečnika ožiljenica oba tipa. Čepovanje je imalo najveći pozitivan efekat na povećanje visine i prečnika kod klona L-100, dok je za proizvodnju kvalitetnih ožiljenica klona L-80 neophodna dalja optimizacija.
AB  - In this paper, the morphological variability of autochthonous unregistered experimental white poplar clones, L-12, L-80 and L-100, and the registered reference clone Villafranca were monitored in a two-year nursery trial. The highest percentage of rooting of cuttings and survival of rooted cuttings were recorded for clone L-12, during the two growing seasons. The height of rooted cuttings of L-12 was almost identical to that of Villafranca during the first growing season (rooted cuttings 1/1), and slightly lower, in comparison to Villafranca, after the second growing season (rooted cuttings 1/2). The L-12 and Villafranca clones, which differed in diameter at 10th cm from shoot base, during both years, had the highest values of the diameter of rooted cuttings of both types. Coppicing appears to have an exceptionally positive effect on the increase in both height and diameter in clone L-100, while the production of quality rooted cuttings of L-80 requires further optimization.

AB  - U radu su prikazane tri različite metode za testiranje kvaliteta semena bukve. Cilj ovog istraživanja je utvrđivanje korelacijskih odnosa između testa električne provodljivosti, tetrazolijum testa i tretmana semena vodonik peroksidom. Seme je sakupjeno iz 12 različitih semenskih sastojina na području Srbije, koje se uobičajeno koriste za sakupljanje semena za rasadničku proizvodnju. Testirani uzorak je nasumično odabran iz ukupne količine sakupljenog semena. Analiza dobijenih rezultata obuhvatila je izračunavanje Pirsonovog koeficijenta korelacije u statističkom programu "Statistica 7". Utvrđena je korelacija između zabeleženih rezultata mase semena i električne provodljivosti, tetrazolium testa i tretmana vodonik peroksidom; električne provodljivosti i tetrazolijum testa i vodonik peroksid tretmana, kao i između tetrazolijum testa i vodonik peroksid tretmana. Na osnovu sprovedenih istraživanja može se zaključiti da standardizacijom testa električne provodljivosti uz primenu tetrazolijum testa i vodonik peroksid tretmana doprinelo bi se kvalitetnijem i bržem utvrđivanju kvaliteta semena bukve u komercijalne svrhe.
AB  - This paper presents three different methods for beech seed quality testing. The aim of this study is to determine the correlation between the electrical conductivity test, tetrazolium test and hydrogen peroxide treatment. The seed was collected in 12 different seed stands in Serbia that are commonly used for nursery production. The seed sample used for testing was randomly taken from the total amount of the collected seed. The analysis of the obtained results included the calculation of the Pearson correlation coefficient in the statistical software package "Statistica 7". The correlation was determined between the recorded results of the seed weight and the electrical conductivity; the seed weight and the tetrazolium test; the seed weight and the hydrogen peroxide treatment; the electrical conductivity and the tetrazolium test; the electrical conductivity and the hydrogen peroxide treatment; the tetrazolium test and the hydrogen peroxide treatment. Based on the conducted researches it can be concluded that the standardization of the electrical conductivity test using the tetrazolium test and hydrogen peroxide treatment could contribute to a more quality and more comprehensive determination of the beech seed quality for commercial purposes.

Capital Budgeting Applied to Serbian Poplar Plantations

AB  - Background and Purpose: Capital budgeting is the process in which a business determines and evaluates potential large expenses or investments. These expenditures and investments include projects such as building a new plant or investing in a long-term venture. In the case of poplar plantations in Serbia, a prospective project's lifetime cash inflows and outflows can be assessed in order to determine whether generated potential returns meet a sufficient target benchmark, also known as "investment appraisal". The purpose of this study is to show relative profitability of alternative courses of action in poplar plantations. Material and Methods: The investigated plantations were established from Populus x euramericana cl. I-214 on different soil types, situated in north-western part of Serbia, with planting spacing 6x3 m, differently aged, mainly for technical wood production. The data used in this study were collected from the management and materials books of the "Vojvodinasume" Public Forest Enterprise, which is the official owner of these stands. All of the plantations are state-owned. At the end the supply chain of poplar wood production is presented. Different capital budgeting techniques and different discount rates are employed to determine which types of poplar plantations, treated as separate projects, will or not will yield the most return over an applicable period of time. Results and Conclusions: The financial effects for sample plot plantations were first evaluated with an external funder prerequisite of 12% discount rate, and continued with different investment appraisal discount rates. For the discount rate r=12%, all tested areas had a negative net present value (NPV). Average internal rate of return (IRR) is 5.63% and payback period is acceptable for the investor at 6% and less. The average benefit-cost analysis amount is 0.36 for all stands with a discount rate of r=12%.

Kvalitet ploča iverica na tržištu Srbije u pogledu emisije formaldehida

AB  - U ovom radu istražen je trend kretanja emisije formaldehida iz ploča iverica uvezenih na tržište Srbije. Uzorkovanje i ispitivanje ploča iverica obavljeno je u dva vremenski odvojena perioda. Prvi period ispitivanja odvijao se tokom 2011. godine, a drugi tokom 2015-2016. godine. U oba ova perioda, uzorkovane su sirove ploče iverice, poreklom od tri različita proizvođača. Perforator metoda (EN 120) korišćena je za ispitivanje sadržaja formaldehida u uzorcima ploča. Rezultati pomenutih ispitivanja pokazali su da velika većina uzoraka pripada E1 klasi ploča iverica. Pored toga, oko 19 % ploča iverica uzorkovanih u 2011. godini i oko 31 % ploča uzorkovanih tokom perioda 2015-2016. godine imali su sadržaj formaldehida ispod 50 % od zahteva za E1 klasom.
AB  - The formaldehyde potential of particleboards imported on Serbian market was evaluated in this research. The sampling and testing of particleboards were conducted in two discrete periods: first was during 2011 and the second was in the period of 2015-2016. For both periods, the samples of raw particleboards originated from three different producers. The perforator method (EN 120) was used to test the formaldehyde content in the particleboard samples. In general, the results have showed that the majority of the samples belong to the E1 class of particleboards. In addition, 19 % of the particleboards sampled in 2011 and 31 % of the boards sampled in 2015-2016 were found to have formaldehyde content below 50 % of E1 class requirements.

AB  - Wood composite panels produced with formaldehyde-based resins present one of the major sources of formaldehyde emissions in the interior. This problem has become publicly recognized during 1970ies, and since then the significant efforts were addressed to control the formaldehyde emission from wood-based panels. The European and USA regulations on this subject have led to further improvements in the resin development, and to the technology of wood based panels in a broader aspect. Today, the regulations in Serbia concerning the formaldehyde emission standards are based on the accepted European standards, and the same applies to the testing methods. The capacities for testing the wood based panels on the free formaldehyde were developed in Serbia during the 1980ies, firstly at the Faculty of Forestry of the Belgrade University. The analysis of existing capacities for formaldehyde testing in Serbia is given in this paper, as well as the possibilities for further improvements in this field.

AB  - The paper shows the differences in growth rings width between bald cypress stems grown on two alluvial sites in Serbia - Veliko ratno ostrvo and Backa Palanka. Performing this anatomical research included falling of overall six trunks (3 from one and 3 from another location). After that, appropriate wood cross-sections were made and they served for making permanent anatomical preparations. Obtained results proved a big dependence between radial increment from one side and available water content together with nutrients content on the other side. It caused a very significant correlation between growth rings width and qualitative site features. Bearing on mind this fact, it was established that Veliko ratno ostrvo is more suitable for bald cypress growing. As for behavior of radial increment with ages, there are some differences between these locations, first of all because stems from Veliko ratno ostrvo still did not reach its culmination.
