AB - In this paper, the variability of morphological (stem height, stem basal diameter, proportion of pith, wood and bark) and wood anatomical characteristics (fiber length, fiber diameter, fiber lumen diamater, double cell-wall thickness, vessel diameter, wood rays width and height) of three Salix alba clones (B-44, 347 and NS 73/6) and one Salix viminalis clone both in the control plot and in the site contaminated with a mixture of heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb) was investigated. The observed results showed that individuals of all four clones had significantly higher average values of stem height and stem basal diameter at the control plot compared to the polluted site. As for the proportion of pith, bark and wood, heavy metals caused an increase in the share of pith and a decrease in the share of bark and wood in all clones with the exception of clone NS 73/6. The analysis of wood fiber dimensions showed that the values of all parameters were higher at the control site with the exception of fiber lumen diameter where higher values were observed for clones B-44 and NS 73/6 at the polluted site. Higher values of vessel diameter were recorded for all clones at the control plot, while wood rays width of all individuals was greater at the contaminated site. Regarding the wood rays height, only Salix viminali s showed higher value at the polluted site. These results confirmed that pollution-induced heavy metal stress significantly altered the morphological and wood anatomical characteristics of all researched clones and that it may affect their utility properties.

AB - Water is one of the key ecological factors that has a great impact to development and productivity of lowland species such as Quercus robur. This paper deals with water regime influence to site conditions of these species and how actually changeable soil moisture affects Q. robur. Studied area includes a protective embankment built on the river bank in order to eliminate flooding effect, which means that all needs for water these associations provide from rainfalls and groundwater. Water regime was monitored during two critical years (extremely dry and extremely wet) on four soil types - Planosol, Fluvisol and Gleysol that belong to hydromorphic (three experimental plots) and Chernozem which belongs to automorphic soils (three experimental plots), respectively. It was studied the distribution of rainfalls and groundwater during the growing seasons and how it affects total and available water amount in the soil. The main focus should be given to available water, because it is located in capillary pores and plants can utilize it. Bearing in mind rainfalls makes just 15-20% of the total water amount in the soil it is much more significant to evaluate its proportion in available water. Based on obtained results, we can deduce that much more suitable site conditions for Q. robur are present on hydromorphic soils due to much greater proportion of groundwater.

AB - In the paper was analysed the influence of three different container types, used for cultivation of Pinus nigra and Pinus sylvestris seedlings, on dimensions of their anatomical (resin ducts width, resin ducts number, tracheid number, tracheid width, wood rays height) and morphological (height, root collar diameter, sturdiness coefficient) elements, and on proportion of wood, bark and pith, as well. Two-factorial ANOVA showed that container type affects a lot all investigated anatomical traits by both species, but on the other side, these species varied between each other just in terms of tracheid width and wood rays height. Based on descriptive statistics, significantly lower values of all studied anatomical elements were recorded by biodegradable compared to plastic containers. As for P. nigra seedlings, they showed the best anatomical performance in Plantagrah I, while Hiko V-120 SS was the most suitable for P. sylvestris. The highest proportion of pith and bark was recorded in biodegradable container. As for morphological parameters, such as height and root collar diameter, higher values were recorded by plastic containers.

AB - From productive and ecological point of view, Quercus robur L. is an extremely important species and the investigation its anatomical properties is very significant in terms of its technical and technological utilization. The paper deals with the analysis of the wood fiber characteristics (fiber length, fiber lumen width, double -cell wall thickness, Runkel ratio) of mature pedunculate oak trees in the non -flooded (Management Unit "Viniena-& Zcaron;eravinac-Puk") and flooded area (Management Unit "GVO 83 b"). One of the aims of the study is to determine the wood fiber quality and the possibility of use in paper and pulp production. When the mean values of the analysed anatomical characteristics are compared, the results show slightly higher values in the non -flooded area, except for the Runkel ratio. The radial pattern of the investigated characteristics depending on the age shows growth in the non -flooded area, while the same tendency in the flooded area was found the fiber length only. It was recorded that fiber lumen width, double -cell wall thickness and Runkel ratio decreased in the final annual rings. The wood fiber quality for use in pulp and paper production is the greatest in the juvenile zone, unlike sapwood zone, regardless of the site conditions.

AB - In the spacious inundation area on the left bank of the lower course of the Sava River in Serbia, there is an abandoned meander Special Nature Reserve, "Obedska bara", which represents a very important floodplain in this part of Europe. This area is characterized by an exceptional wealth of biodiversity with a significant presence of rare and endangered species of national and international importance. Hydrological conditions in the mentioned area were analyzed from the aspect of surface water movement in nature and conditions altered by human factors (after the construction of the road network, canals, etc.). The movement of surface water, i.e., the filling and emptying of the investigated area, parallel to the water level of the Sava River, is shown using a digital terrain model. Our simulation of the change in surface water level within the studied area included the display of underwater areas, both with the formation of a flood wave (i.e., increasing water level of the Sava) and with the outflow of water from the pond when the water level in the Sava was reduced in both scenarios (natural and conditions altered by human factors). GIS and terrain digitalization were used for geospatial and hydrological analyses and, based on this, maps that display endangered areas could be made. The obtained results show that the largest human impact was recorded at the water level of the Sava River 74 m above sea level. The aforementioned water regime changes were shown to negatively affect dominant vegetation, such as pedunculate oak and ash.

AB - Conserving clean and safe freshwater is a global challenge, with nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) as frequent limiting factors affecting water quality due to eutrophication. This paper provides a critical overview of the spatiotemporal variability in both nutrient concentrations and their total mass ratio (TN:TP) in the canal network of the Hydro system Danube-Tisza-Danube at 21 measuring locations monitored by the Environmental Protection Agency of the Republic of Serbia over a length of almost 1000 km, collected once a month during the last decade. A spatiotemporal variation in nutrient concentrations in the tested surface water samples was confirmed by correlations and cluster analyses. The highest TN concentrations were found in winter and early spring (non-vegetation season), and the highest TP concentrations in the middle of the year (vegetation season). The TN:TP mass ratio as an indicator of the eutrophication pointed out N and P co-limitation (TN:TP 8-24) in 64% of samples, N limitation (TN:TP lt 8) was detected in 27% and P limitation (TN:TP gt 24) in the remaining 9% of water samples. Such observations indicate slow-flowing, lowland water courses exposed to the effects of non-point and point contamination sources as nutrient runoff from the surrounding farmlands and/or urban and industrial zones, but further investigation is needed for clarification. These results are an important starting point for reducing N and P runoff loads and controlling source pollution to improve water quality and underpin recovery from eutrophication in the studied watershed.

abstract = "Conserving clean and safe freshwater is a global challenge, with nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) as frequent limiting factors affecting water quality due to eutrophication. These results are an important starting point for reducing N and P runoff loads and controlling source pollution to improve water quality and underpin recovery from eutrophication in the studied watershed.",

AB - Anatomical properties of pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.) wood have not been previously investigated in Serbia, so bearing in mind economic-productive and ecological significance of this species, it was one of the main reasons why this research was conducted. In this paper, fibre length (FL), double cell-wall thickness (DCWT) and fibre lumen diameter (FLD) were measured in pedunculate oak wood from two different sites. The study was conducted at two sites (Donji Srem - MU "Raskovica-Smogvica" and Gornji Srem - MU "Kupinske grede"), situated along the Sava River and characterised by different ecological conditions, including flooding regimes. Measurements were conducted in radial direction, from pith to bark, in order to assess variation of investigated characteristics with cambial age, between two sites and between individual trees within each site. All measured characteristics from both sites increase going from pith to bark apart from FL in the area of Donji Srem - MU "Kupinske grede" that reaches maximum value in the central part of xylem and then decreases. Hydrological site conditions affect the dimensions of pedunculate oak wood fibres and these values are a bit higher in Gornji Srem - MU "Raskovica-Smogvica", due to a greater quantity of available water.

AB - The paper deals with anatomical characteristics of wood fibres of Quercus robur L. Fiber length, double-cell wall thickness and fiber lumen diameter were analysed from samples in flooded and non-flooded area along Sava river in Serbia. All anatomical elements were measured from pith to bark in order to establish variation with cambial age, not only between researched sites, but also between individuals within each locality. In this study, there was no statistically significant difference only for mean values of fiber length between individual trees at non-flooded area, and in fiber lumen diameter at flooded area. Increasing of mean values of observed anatomical parameters with cambial age is valid for flooded area (MU "Grabovako-vitojevacko ostrvo 20e"), while for another locality (MU "Blata-Malovanci") it is the case just for double-cell wall thickness. Mean values of all analysed anatomical elements are bigger in flooded area and this could be a consequence of more suitable ecological conditions for Quercus robur L. development present in this locality. Obtained variations show nonhomogeneous wood fibre features at both localities.

AB - Sediment matrices, as integral organo-mineral parts of aquatic bodies, can effectively bind and accumulate nutrients and potentially hazardous substances from diffuse and/or point sources of contamination. In this study, we analysed the longitudinal distribution of macronutrients (total N and available P and K) and the mechanical composition of the sediments of Jegricka watercourse (a part of the multi-functional Danube-Tisa-Danube canal network) known for its exposure to anthropogenic loads. The results showed that the nutrient pollution index was mostly above 1.0 (in 76%, 86% and 93% of the analysed samples for K, N and P, respectively), and the mean values for N, P and K were 2.69, 1.92 and 1.24, respectively. The average content of all nutrients and the sand fraction were significantly higher, whereas the clay fraction was considerably lower, in the sediment samples than in the adjacent arable Chernozem soil used as a benchmark. The differences in the nutrient contents and mechanical properties in the sediments were measured longitudinally (at upstream vs. downstream stations) and assessed using correlation, cluster analysis, and principal component analysis. The results suggest that the nutrient sources in the sediments as well as their transport and loading mechanisms along Jegricka watercourse are diverse and complex, likely driven by a combination of untreated industrial/urban wastewater discharges, erosion and surface runoff from the surrounding agricultural land. As a majority of the analysed watercourse banks belong to areas of special ecological value, the obtained results may be useful: i) indicators for designing and implementation of sustainable land/water policies and measures for the protection and rehabilitation of these valuable ecosystems, ii) inputs for testing/calibrating the sediment transport models and iii) the basis for sediment management.

AB - This paper analyses the influence of vegetation on the runoff in the Skrapež River Basin. The conducted analyses determined that the well-preserved and stable soil layer and forest cover greatly affect the water runoff and the soil water regime in general. A continuous HEC-HMS model was used to model runoff. The data used for the modelling purposes were observed at the hydrological and meteorological station of Požega. Precipitation and runoff were monitored for two consecutive years, and the method of land and vegetation use was obtained by analyzing the appropriate maps in the ArcGIS 10.3 software package. The effect of vegetation on runoff is presented hypothetically, assuming that site conditions change with an increase in the forest cover of the basin. Surface runoff can be significantly reduced by the proper application of conservation measures and permanent work to improve the characteristics of soil texture and structure. The infiltration properties of soil are greatly increased by its proper use and cultivation. The obtained results show that an increasing area under forest cover decreases both direct and basic runoff.

AB - In this paper, the risk zone mapping of declining lowland forests belonging to "Morovia", management unit "Varadin-Zupanja" (northern Serbia) is performed using geostatistics analysis. Based on the monitoring of groundwater level, the Kriging method has been performed for the spatial distribution of groundwater level for a multiyear period (2010-2013) - reference level and characteristic levels for the wettest and the driest year during the analyzed period. Risk assessment was determined by the variance of characteristics compared to reference levels. Then, multi-criteria decision analysis methods (AHP, PROMETHEE II) were applied to define the rank of each department (smaller forest management units) located in the research area. These analyses are very important because they enable to locate of the area with a high risk of forest decline and to rank departments using criteria: deviation from water level recorded during dry periods, species demand for water, conservation status and purpose of the unit (seed stands or technical wood). The proposed methodology is usable for the determination of the primary localities for the application of management measures conducting on the level of lower planned units (departments) and thus lead to the successful planning and more efficient forest management. Obtained results at the researched area showed that a negative influence on the watering regime has groundwater level decreasing compared to the reference level because it directly affects available water for the plants. Based on multicriteria analysis methods, it was deduced that the most endangered parts are located at the edge, while this risk is much lower in the central part of the management unit. A combination of applied methods (geostatistics and multicriteria analysis) is of great importance for forestry management.

A combination of applied methods (geostatistics and multicriteria analysis) is of great importance for forestry management.",

AB - In this paper, floods that occurred as a result of a cyclone were analysed. The cyclone generated rainfalls of high intensity. The flood wave on the river Belica was reconstructed by recording high water levels. Through subsequent recordings of the flow profile morphology, watercourse, and riverbed reach, the dimensions of the riverbed were defined. The total station TOPCON 3100M was used as a surveying instrument. Based on the registered traces of high waters and a combined method and application of Hec-Ras software, the flow capacity of the riverbed was determined, and meter readings on the flow profile of the watercourse were registered.

AB - The paper deals with length of tracheids of bald cypress at two alluvial sites in Serbia. Scope of the paper was to establish site influence (dimate, soil, etc.) on mentioned anatomical feature and to quantify it, as well. Axial tracheid changes have been observed depending on three factors: cambial age, zone inside growth ring and stem height where sampling was performed. The paper established gradually increasing of axial tracheid length with cambial age and that did not depend on zone inside growth ring and stem height. There was also significant influence of the zone inside growth ring to axial tracheid length, while stem height where sampling was performed does not have significant influence. There was found relation between factors that determine site such as physical and chemical soil properties and climate from one and axial tracheid length from another side.

AB - The paper deals with height and density of woody rays per mm2 by bald cypress stems at two alluvial sites in Serbia (Veliko ratno ostrvo and Bačka Palanka). Overall 6 stems (3 at one and 3 at another locality) were harvested. After that discs were made and they served for permanent anatomical preparations making. All necessary measurements were performed on these preparations. Inside each growth ring was selected 6 visible fields (3 at earlyand 3 at latewood zone) and within all fields density of woody rays per mm2 was calculated. According to simple equation number of woody rays per mm2 was determined. As for height of woody rays, it was calculated by parenchyma cells counting. Researched bald cypress features were measured depending on 3 factors: cambial age, stem height and zone inside growth ring. As for relation between number and height of woody rays, there is obvious inverse - greater density of woody rays means they are shorter. The scope of the paper was to establish how height and number of woody rays per mm2 change depending on 3 observed factors - age, stem height and zone inside growth rings.

AB - The paper deals with content of heavy metals in groundwater and surface water. Bearing on mind a huge problem related to pedunculate oak forests decline in the area of Ravni Srem, it is necessary to conduct an appropriate monitoring of water quality. One of the most important factors connected with water quality is concentration of heavy metals. As for groundwater, concentration of microelements was researched at four soil types: pseudogley, fluvi-soil, humogley and chernozem. Among all examined heavy metals, a special attention has been paid to following: Zn, Mn, Cd, Ni and Pb. Particularly toxic metals such as Ni, Pb and Cd are not recorded, apart from one soil type by groundwater sample. As for Zn and Mn concentrations, they area significantly over maximal allowed values, but it does not have some big influence on water quality.

AB - Pedunculate oak forests at the area of Gornji Srem are one of the most significant forest ecosystems from ecological and economical point of view. Survival and development of this higrophilous species mainly depends on available water quantity needed for basic living functions maintaining. Bearing on mind that embankment building at this area eliminated influence of flooding, and that precipitation quantity during vegetation season is not enough, as well, pedunculate oak clearly provides its water needs from groundwater. The research was conducted within Forest Administrations "Morovic" and "Visnjicevo" that cover area of about 25.000 ha belonging to Forest Holding "Sremska Mitrovica". The scope of the paper was to determine an average (reference) level of groundwater during vegetation season for the whole researched period (2010-2013). The next step was to establish, based on climate parameters, extreme years (the driest and the wettest). After that it was necessary to find a deviation of an average groundwater level in critical years compared to reference level. These deviations establish how much an average groundwater level goes up during wettest and how much it goes down during the driest year compared to reference level, respectively. Based on above mentioned deviations, maps by using Kriging model have been made. These maps serve for risk zones determining. Practical contribution of the paper is related to positioning of potentially endangered areas, that means adaptation of management principles to present hydrological site conditions.

AB - The paper shows the differences in growth rings width between bald cypress stems grown on two alluvial sites in Serbia - Veliko ratno ostrvo and Backa Palanka. Performing this anatomical research included falling of overall six trunks (3 from one and 3 from another location). After that, appropriate wood cross-sections were made and they served for making permanent anatomical preparations. Obtained results proved a big dependence between radial increment from one side and available water content together with nutrients content on the other side. It caused a very significant correlation between growth rings width and qualitative site features. Bearing on mind this fact, it was established that Veliko ratno ostrvo is more suitable for bald cypress growing. As for behavior of radial increment with ages, there are some differences between these locations, first of all because stems from Veliko ratno ostrvo still did not reach its culmination.

AB - In the paper, there have been analyzed petioles of the beech collected from ten natural populations in Serbia. Due to performing this research, different morphological and anatomical elements of the petiole have been observed. As for morphological elements, following have been included: petiole length (cm), petiole width (mm), and petiole thickness (mm), while quantitative anatomical elements included width of central cylinder (mm) and thickness of central cylinder (mm). On the other side, based on number, distribution and shape of vascular bundles, anatomical structure of the petiole was followed. Methods of descriptive statistics have been performed in order to determine variability of each element. From anatomical point of view, slight differences have been found between different populations. As for morphological features, petiole length is the least changeable, while petiole width is the most variable. Among quantitative anatomical features, central cylinder length is the least changeable. The vascular structure of petioles and their anatomy could successfully be used as a taxonomic character.

AB - There have been analyzed morho-anatomical characteristics of bald cypress needles from Topcider Park (Belgrade). In order to perform the research, it was chosen 5 test stems and from all of them, 20 needles from branches and 20 needles from the trunk were taken. By descriptive statistic methods, one-factor variance analysis method (ANOVA) and LSD-test, 7 observed elements have been analyzed (needle length, needle width, needle thickness, central cylinder width, central cylinder thickness, mesophyll width and mesophyll thickness). As for anatomical structure of needles, it was related to tissue defining and differentation grade of parenchyma cells as tissues constructive elements. From anatomical point of view, the greatest difference between needles from the branches and from the trunk is related to their maturation grade. All in all, there were established some differences between these two needle types not only from morphological, but also from anatomical point of view.

In Donji Srem, there are analyzed two soils types from hydromorphic class – fluvisol and humogley. Basic ecological factor – water content in the soil – was analyzed due to current humidity, whose changes have been shown in different ranges of water constants for each soil type. Analyzed water forms are: gravity, easily-available, hard-available and unavailable water for the plants. Duration time of mentioned water forms in the soil was analyzed during the vegetation period (2010-2012). Supplies of some water forms (gravity - very wet zone; easily-available – wet zone; hard – available – middle-wet zone; unavailable – dry zone) have been analyzed on the base of soil types (on the base of genetic horizons) and they show quantity of available water during the vegetation period. On the base of obtained results, changes of water content in the soil have been recorded, not only during the vegetation period of the same year, but also during the different years. Morphological and morphometric research of the root system of pedunculate oak show zones from which the water has been adopted, and the way of its adaptability to different soil types, as well. AB - In the paper, there was analyzed participation of the latewood zone inside growth rings of bald cypress from two different locations in Serbia. Its proportion has been monitored depending on three factors growth rings width, age and stem height. Between growth rings width and latewood zone proportion was established negative correlation. For that reason, stems on Backa Palanka, whose growth rings are narrower, have greater latewood zone proportion compared to stems from Veliko ratno ostrvo, that have faster radial increment. Greater latewood proportion contributes to better mechanical and technical properties of the stems from Backa Palanka. As for relations between latewood proportion, from one side, and age and stem height, from the other side, there is also established negative correlation. Bearing on mind that bald cypress belongs to soft conifers, its latewood proportion almost never exceeds more than 1/3 of the whole growth rings width.

abstract = "In the paper, there was analyzed participation of the latewood zone inside growth rings of bald cypress from two different locations in Serbia. Bearing on mind that bald cypress belongs to soft conifers, its latewood proportion almost never exceeds more than 1/3 of the whole growth rings width.",

AB - The drainage channel network in Vojvodina, northern part of the Republic of Serbia, in total length of around 20,000 km, transfers excessive (under)ground waters from around 2.15 million ha of lowlands. Channels are mostly in direct connection with the surrounding arable agricultural land and are exposed to different run-off, leaching and/or wind erosion processes. Close to urban areas, some channel sections serve as recipients of unrefined sewage and industrial waste waters. Water flows and velocities, as well as the transportable capacity of fluvial materials (sediments) are relatively low. This, in combination with other natural and anthropogenic impacts, contributes to sediment generation in the drainage channel network. Based on around 100 sediment samples from 46 channels, concentrations of primary nutrients (N, P and K) were elaborated in this study. Detected concentrations of macronutrients in the channel sediments (e.g. N 1-1.2%, P 100-265 and K 100-380 mg 100 g(-1)) exceeded their content in surrounding arable land by a few fold. Also, significantly higher nutrient concentrations (in average by 50%) were detected in downstream (vs. upstream) channel sections. An excessive presence of observed elements in channel sediments, due to interactive processes between water and sediment material, can adversely influence the water quality and life conditions for channel biota and caused other negative environmental impacts such as eutrophication. These results clearly confirm that the processes of nutrient accumulation in channel sediments are greater than those in the surrounding, mostly intensively arable land areas. The erosion of unprotected agricultural areas and sediment transport as the most important pollution pathways from the drainage basin to channel network may be essential factors responsible for detected condition of nutrient accumulation.

AB - Water quality conditions of the Tatarnica canalized watercourse are considered in this paper. Tatarnica is the main canal of one of the drainage systems, which is situated about twenty kilometers to the West of Novi Sad (Vojvodina, Serbia). The quality of water and sediments in this canal is important because its water is used for irrigation of vegetable crops on the surrounding arable lands. In addition, its confluence into the Danube is near Begecka jama, which is a nature park with special ecological value. Based on the monthly water sampling and the analysis of relevant quality indicators during the research period, from year 2006 to 2012, the results of seven-year-long water and sediments quality monitoring are presented. According to the most relevant water quality parameters, water has a good ecological potential in most samples. However, occasional occurrence of inadequate water quality was noted, usually due to organic pollution, manifested as increased values of Biological and chemical Oxygen Demand (BOD5 and COD) in 35% samples. Exceptions from the required water quality were determined for the other parameters in about 10-25% of the samples. Sediment properties, according to all analyzed parameters, are generally within limits which do not have negative influences on the canal environment and its surroundings.
