AB - Forests of primeval character in Europe usually receive the highest protection status. The importance of these ecosystems is highlighted in the BIO2023 Strategy, which outlines specific guidelines for the identification and protection of primeval forests within the European Union. Endemic ecosystems characteristic of Europe, such as pure beech forests, are facing numerous threatening factors in the context of climate change and are considered one of the most endangered habitats. Efforts to preserve and enhance forest ecosystems, as an initial step, involve conservation and long-term monitoring to gain insight into the adaptation and evolutionary strategies of the present species and ecosystems as a whole. The extremely strict protection conditions prescribed in strict reserves impose very limited human intervention, while non-invasive scientific research is considered a desirable activity. One of the first protected pure beech forests in Serbia is the Strict Nature Reserve "Felješana" which, despite being protected since 1950, has not been thoroughly and systematically studied from the aspect of woody species diversity. The aim of this paper is to provide, for the first time, data on the available gene pool of woody species in the primeval beech forest "Felješana". The field research methodology included recording woody species in the tree, shrub, and ground layers at pre-determined monitoring points and identifying and georeferencing target species. For the georeferenced individuals of the target species, height, diameter at breast height, breast circumference, and horizontal crown projection were determined. A total of 27 native woody species were recorded, with 14 species in the tree layer, 25 in the shrub layer, and 19 in the ground layer. Although beech is the dominant species across all three vegetation layers throughout the area, the recorded number of species in the shrub and ground layers indicates the potential for changes in species distribution and composition in this reserve in the future. All recorded species are of native origin, among which six species belong to one of the categories of rare, endangered, and vulnerable species in the forest fund of Serbia. Georeferencing and determining the basic characteristics of the target species individuals have provided a solid foundation for longterm monitoring of the gene pool and the conservation of woody species in SNR "Felješana".

AB - Wood density and fibre length are two wood properties that are important in determining the quality of wood for commercial use. The fibre length of red oak has not been studied to the same extent as in other oak species. The aim of this paper is to explore the anatomical variation and wood density of red oak wood, as valuable information for researchers in other fields. Samples were taken in a 60-year-old red oak stand in the south part of Belgrade on the site of Stepin Lug. Along the south radius, the disc samples of 20 x 20 mm were cut from the sapwood, mature and juvenile wood. Ovendry density and fibre length were measured from the pith to the bark. According to the obtained data, the average oven-dry density of wood per radius is 0.694 g/cm3 . The lowest is in the juvenile wood and ranges from 0.628 to 0.681 g/cm3 , then in the part of sapwood - 0.662 g/cm3 , and the highest is in the mature wood where the density ranges from 0.707 to 0.740 g/cm3 . The presented values show certain differences, but also conform to literature data on the density of some industrial species from the genus Quercus L. The obtained results of the wood fibre length show that it varies from 0.99 to 1.33 mm which was measured in mature wood. The average length in a mature zone is 1.26 (1.16-1.33) mm, while in a juvenile area the average length is 1.02 (0.85-1.23) mm. Based on the known wood fibre length, it is possible to determine the density of red oak wood. In this research, a positive influence was determined in both parts of the tree, juvenile and mature, but a better mathematical dependence was obtained in the mature zone.

AB - The modern approach in the development of programs for the reintroduction of red deer was applied for the first time in Serbia. We compared the most important planned and implemented activities in the period 2018-2021, and assessed the results achieved in the Mt. Tara area. The plan was to hold the red deer (5 male + 15 female) in the accli-matisation enclosure for several months and release them into the selected favourable area (150 km2) during three consecutive years. Bark stripping occurred mainly on thinner common hazel stems of coppice origin ( lt = 9.9 cm). Total mortality among the 72 red deer that were transported to the acclimatisation enclosure was 8.3%. The long-est movement of a 4-year-old female (held for 15 weeks) was 24 km. During the study period, no bark stripping was observed outside the acclimatization enclosure, nor were any deaths of the released red deer registered. In the period 2019-2021, 74 red deer were released from the acclimatization enclosure into the Mt. Tara area, which is about 60% of the estimated capacity of the selected favourable area.

AB - White poplar is a key species in wood production and afforestation, but also very important for biodiversity preservation and habitat improvement. Vegetative propagation from hardwood cuttings is the most desirable method of white poplar breeding. The present research analyzed the effect of various technological treatments on four white poplar clones. Selected treatments were powder formulations of indole butyric acid (IBA) and foliar treatment with urea. The variability of 14 morphometric characteristics on the rooting of cuttings was analyzed, as well as relationships between them. Differences in analyzed morphometric characteristics depended on genotype, while the effect of the examined technological treatments was detected only by Fisher's least significant difference (LSD) test. Significant variability between genotypes was found for traits describing rooting at the basal cut (R0 and R0p), the number of leaves (LN), the total number of roots (TRN), and cutting survival in the first part of the growing season (SURV07). Application of IBA had significant stimulating effects on rooting at the lower part of cuttings (R05) compared to controls. Variability between genotypes after foliar treatment with urea was not detected. The examined parameters were grouped into 5 groups by principal component analysis, where shoot traits and traits that describe rooting at the basal cut were in the same group with total number of roots, and cutting survival (SURV07) was in a separate group. These results suggest a need for further testing of the characteristics of hardwood cuttings in white poplars. More efficient clone technology is needed, using auxins and/or nitrogen fertilization designed to suit the specific requirements of particular clones.

AB - The paper deals with length of tracheids of bald cypress at two alluvial sites in Serbia. Scope of the paper was to establish site influence (dimate, soil, etc.) on mentioned anatomical feature and to quantify it, as well. Axial tracheid changes have been observed depending on three factors: cambial age, zone inside growth ring and stem height where sampling was performed. The paper established gradually increasing of axial tracheid length with cambial age and that did not depend on zone inside growth ring and stem height. There was also significant influence of the zone inside growth ring to axial tracheid length, while stem height where sampling was performed does not have significant influence. There was found relation between factors that determine site such as physical and chemical soil properties and climate from one and axial tracheid length from another side.

AB - The paper shows the differences in growth rings width between bald cypress stems grown on two alluvial sites in Serbia - Veliko ratno ostrvo and Backa Palanka. Performing this anatomical research included falling of overall six trunks (3 from one and 3 from another location). After that, appropriate wood cross-sections were made and they served for making permanent anatomical preparations. Obtained results proved a big dependence between radial increment from one side and available water content together with nutrients content on the other side. It caused a very significant correlation between growth rings width and qualitative site features. Bearing on mind this fact, it was established that Veliko ratno ostrvo is more suitable for bald cypress growing. As for behavior of radial increment with ages, there are some differences between these locations, first of all because stems from Veliko ratno ostrvo still did not reach its culmination.

AB - In the paper, there have been analyzed petioles of the beech collected from ten natural populations in Serbia. Due to performing this research, different morphological and anatomical elements of the petiole have been observed. As for morphological elements, following have been included: petiole length (cm), petiole width (mm), and petiole thickness (mm), while quantitative anatomical elements included width of central cylinder (mm) and thickness of central cylinder (mm). On the other side, based on number, distribution and shape of vascular bundles, anatomical structure of the petiole was followed. Methods of descriptive statistics have been performed in order to determine variability of each element. From anatomical point of view, slight differences have been found between different populations. As for morphological features, petiole length is the least changeable, while petiole width is the most variable. Among quantitative anatomical features, central cylinder length is the least changeable. The vascular structure of petioles and their anatomy could successfully be used as a taxonomic character.

AB - There have been analyzed morho-anatomical characteristics of bald cypress needles from Topcider Park (Belgrade). In order to perform the research, it was chosen 5 test stems and from all of them, 20 needles from branches and 20 needles from the trunk were taken. By descriptive statistic methods, one-factor variance analysis method (ANOVA) and LSD-test, 7 observed elements have been analyzed (needle length, needle width, needle thickness, central cylinder width, central cylinder thickness, mesophyll width and mesophyll thickness). As for anatomical structure of needles, it was related to tissue defining and differentation grade of parenchyma cells as tissues constructive elements. From anatomical point of view, the greatest difference between needles from the branches and from the trunk is related to their maturation grade. All in all, there were established some differences between these two needle types not only from morphological, but also from anatomical point of view.

AB - This paper presents the results of air-pollutant influence on one-year and two-year old needles of Douglas-fir. The aim of this research was determining of resistance of these species. The analysis was performed on samples collected in a Douglas-fir culture established in polluted area of Kolubara coal basin during re-cultivation process of remained material. Control samples from unpolluted area were collected in Douglas-fir culture near mountain Juhor. There has been examined injuries of chlorenchyma cells, evaluating the degree of damage to the chlorenchyma tissue based on the stage of cell disruption which affected the way of the appearance of tannins in the central vacuole. The obtained results showed that the surface area of damaged chlorenchyma cells was significantly increased in polluted environment. At cellular level, there was no complete destruction of thylakoid system, and negative influence of air-pollutants before all affected changing of chloroplasts form, stroma granulation, increasing of thylakoid area, changing of plastoglobulins and collecting of fat in cytoplasm. This kind of changes in one-year and two-year old needles in samples originated from polluted area of Kolubara coal basin included numerous cells from chlorenchyma tissue. This confirms that Douglas-fir is not resistant on air-pollutants influence in researched area.

AB - Populus nigra as a keystone riparian pioneer tree species is one of the rarest and most endangered species in Europe due to the loss of its natural habitats. Genetic diversity existence is a key factor in survival of one species, and stomata as genetically controlled trait could be used for differentiation studies. With the aim of proving stomatal phenotypic variation of the four native populations of Populus nigra located on the banks of three biggest river valleys (Dunabe, Tisa and Sava) in the region of Vojvodina in northern Serbia, we examined various leaf stomatal traits (stomatal length and width, pore length and width, stomatal density, shape coefficient and stomatal and pore area). We tested the differences of stomatal traits among populations, interindividual variability - differences among trees, the intraindividual variability, the differences between sun-exposed and shaded leaves, among leaves nested in exposition and the differences in adaxial and abaxial leaf surface. Based on mixed model ANOVA results, interpopulation variability, as statistically significant differences, observed only for stomatal pore length and shape, while all examined traits showed interindividual variability. On the intraindividual level the results showed differences for stomatal traits, except for stomatal width, stomatal shape coefficient and stomatal density regarding leaf exposure. For better understanding of how morphological and stomatal characteristics vary in black poplar populations, further studies should be necessary involving controlled environmental conditions with the aim of examining phenotypic plasticity to changing climate conditions.

AB - In the paper, there was analyzed participation of the latewood zone inside growth rings of bald cypress from two different locations in Serbia. Its proportion has been monitored depending on three factors growth rings width, age and stem height. Between growth rings width and latewood zone proportion was established negative correlation. For that reason, stems on Backa Palanka, whose growth rings are narrower, have greater latewood zone proportion compared to stems from Veliko ratno ostrvo, that have faster radial increment. Greater latewood proportion contributes to better mechanical and technical properties of the stems from Backa Palanka. As for relations between latewood proportion, from one side, and age and stem height, from the other side, there is also established negative correlation. Bearing on mind that bald cypress belongs to soft conifers, its latewood proportion almost never exceeds more than 1/3 of the whole growth rings width.

Bearing on mind that bald cypress belongs to soft conifers, its latewood proportion almost never exceeds more than 1/3 of the whole growth rings width.",

AB - The paper shows results of research of different light intensity impact on stomata number (stomata density-SD) and stomata area (stomata pore surface-SPS). There were analysed two Paulownia species Paulownia elongata and Paulownia fortune that grew under low and high light intensity. Basic testing hypothesis was related to characteristics of stomata between open and shaded treatment for each of analysed species, and to differences between stomata characteristics for each of species inside the treatment, as well. Due to results of t-test, average values of SD and SPS differed statistically significant for each of analysed species between various light treatments. Species differed statistically significant in average values of analysed stomata characteristics just in treatment with low light intensity. Based on three-way ANOVA results, all sources of phenotypic variability were statistically significant. Interaction between light treatment and species was statistically significant, as well, that shows different species response inside the treatment. Differences between species for analysed stomata characteristics depend on light intensity.

AB - Today there are many technologies for wastewater treatment and rhizofiltration is one of phytoremediation techniques that is very promising for cleanup of large quantities of water with medium or low concentrations of heavy metals. The aim of this study was to investigate phytoremediation potential of ornamental plant C. indica in water contaminated with lead. The present research demonstrated that dry weight of above-ground and below-ground biomass was significantly increased at the highest treatment containing 41 mgPb/L. Lead accumulation in below-ground biomass was up to 90- fold higher than in above-ground biomass. The highest Pb concentration was recorded in root (2480.07 mg/kg) on the 21st sampling day in treatment with the most Pb added. The highest bioconcentration factor (81.16) was recorded in the nutrient solution with the least Pb added. Translocation factor was not significantly affected by lead concentration in nutrient solution or exposure time and it was low (0.01). Symptoms of lead phytotoxicity were not observed on any plant in treatments and control. The results of this research further support the idea that terrestrial plants are more suitable for rhizofiltration than aquatic plants and that C. indica can be used in rhizofiltration systems or floating islands for treatment of water polluted with lead.

AB - Paulownia elongata S. Y. Hu, has exceptionally fast growth in juvenile stage (more than 3 m in the second year). Due to its characteristic of easy generative and vegetative propagation (tissue culture) and renewal, it currently presents the most suitable plant for biomass production in our region, with short rotation time. Poplar clones provide raw material for paper and pulp industry at the moment, and this industry is the biggest softwood consumer in Serbia. Anatomical properties of wood mechanical fibres in Paulownia elongata S. Y. Hu juvenile wood have not been researched in Serbia, since this species has been recently introduced from China (1993). The aim of this paper is to explore the impact of habitats (soil) and fertilisation on wood fibre dimensions in juvenile wood of Paulownia elongata S. Y. Hu. Samples for research of wood fibres originate from experimental plantations of Paulownia elongata S. Y. Hu, 2 years of age, from two different sites: Obrenovac-Veliko polje and Ub-Pambukovica. Based on research of wood anatomy, it has been concluded that there are significant statistical differences in wood fibre dimensions in Paulownia elongata S. Y. Hu from different habitats. Research of wood fibre dimensions in Paulownia elongata S. Y. Hu juvenile wood from two different sites contributes to determine its use for the pulp industry, which supports cultivation of this fast growing species (Table 3, 4 i 5).

AB - Parkway trees in urban environments have a pivotal ecological role, primarily because they modify microclimatological parameters. Norway maple is a suitable species for these purposes since it is very adaptable to city conditions. This characteristic of Norway maple allows urban trees to be used as a basis for biodiversity conservation. Bilaterally symmetrical fruits of Norway maple are particularly convenient for the exploration of developmental stability and the role of genetic and environment in variability of morphological characteristics of Norway maple. Variability change through different conditions could be used for creation of a scale that could serve to predict morphology of Norway maple in different environments. The differences between fruits collected from 4 locations show great variability of the species, but the size and appearance of the fruits are in accordance with literature data and do not deviate in any group of samples. Despite similar normal distributions of groups, the fruits differ significantly, although these variations are not consequences of a cause-and-effect connection between environment and appearance of fruits. Variability of samples taken from the urban environment does not differ from variability of samples taken from natural habitats. The large variability of Norway maple is expected since it has a wide ecological amplitude as well as a small plasticity, which is typical of species adapted to shadowy conditions. The great variability of fruit morphology within each individual is typical of Norway maple, so these could be used as representatives of the population in which they are grown. In this paper it is shown that the differences found between fruits are the result of genetic variations mosaic; that is, they are different ecotypes of Norway maple, since bilaterally symmetrical fruits do not have significantly different left and right sides, which shows the developmental stability of Norway maple.

AB - This paper shows correlations between vessel characteristics and differences in growth-ring width in heartwood and sapwood. Analyzed samples were from an iron-wood tree (Gymnocladus canadensis Lam.) that grew in the Muzljanski Rit area, of the Srpska Crnja municipality in Serbia. According to previous research, it was deduced that Gymnocladus canadensis Lam. belongs to ring-porous species with big vessel lumen in the earlywood zone and thicker cell walls in the latewood. Vessels were more numerous in the latewood zone, and the same was true for heartwood and sapwood. For both layers, sapwood possessed a few more vessels than heartwood, and a statistically significant difference was confirmed by t-test during the early phase. The greatest negative value of correlation coefficient was between the number of vessels and growth-ring width during the early phase for sapwood. The number of vessels decreased in the wider growth rings. The correlation between growth-ring width and the area of vessels had a statistically significant positive value of correlative coefficient, which means that wider growth rings had larger vessel areas in the early phase for sapwood.

AB - This paper analyzes the iron (Fe) content of the vegetation at the beginning of the vegetative cycle for the period 2012/2013. Heavy metal content in the vegetative parts of ten plants (eight types of woody plants and two types of herbs) was analyzed in four locations. Iron (Fe) is a biogenic element present in plants in relatively small quantities. However, its ability to produce chelates, as well as being polyvalent, assorts it into a group of elements which have a significant impact on many physiological and biochemical processes. The analysis of iron content in leaves of woody plants and herbs growing in the natural protected area "Kosmaj" has shown that depending on location the iron concentration, in statistical terms, significantly differs and ranges from A to I in locations 1 and 3, whereas its concentration ranges from A to J in locations 2 and 4.

The analysis of iron content in leaves of woody plants and herbs growing in the natural protected area "Kosmaj" has shown that depending on location the iron concentration, in statistical terms, significantly differs and ranges from A to I in locations 1 and 3, whereas its concentration ranges from A to J in locations 2 and 4.",

sustainable development, with an emphasis on the definition of artificially
established (planted) forests and forest plantations. Forest plantations, the
most productive part of planted forests, play a significant role in
fulfilling the principles of sustainable development. Plantation forestry can
provide additional quantities of roundwood and fuelwood (including biomass),

AB - In the forest complex Obrenovac reserve is located Memorial 'Jozića koliba'. On the site are protected six old oak trees close to 200 years of age as well as an area covered by the projection of their crowns. In order to protect the entire area in the immediate vicinity of representing landscape units an analysis of meadow vegetation of the entire area was carried out. The study of the recent meadow grass vegetation was done according to the principles and methodology of the French-Swiss School Braun-Blanquet. The analysis of plant community was provided through a range of life forms - biological spectrum. In this paper present the results of the analysis of vegetation and environmental conditions at the studied area.

AB - Most commonly used morphological attributes were correlated with nutrient concentration in order to standardize quality assessment of two-year-old hop hornbeam (Ostrya carpinifolia Scop.) seedlings. Diameter has proven to be the best single morphological indicator of seedling quality given its strong positive correlation with all other observed morphological attributes. Seedling dry mass (shoot and root dry mass) and Dickson Quality Index can be considered the most comprehensive indicators of hop hornbeam seedling quality. However, the measuring of mass is destructive and requires a certain amount of time. The absence of strong correlations between physiological and morphological attributes of two-year old seedlings of hop hornbeam suggests the need for further research. The only significant correlation between physiological and morphological attributes (weak and positive) was recorded between the potassium concentration in root and root collar diameter after the second growing season.

AB - The general population genetic characteristics of cultivated horse chestnut trees excelling in growth, phenotype characteristics, type of inflorescence, productivity and resistance to the leafminer Cameraria ohridella Deschka and Dimic were analyzed in Serbia. The analyzed population genetic parameters point to fundamental differences in the genetic structure among the cultivated populations in Serbia. The study shows the variability in all properties among the populations and inter-individual variability within the populations. The variability and differential characteristics were assessed using statistical parameters, taking into account the satisfactory reflection of the hereditary potential. The assessed differences in the vitality and evolution potential of different populations can determine the methods of horse chestnut gene pool collection, reconstruction and improvement.

AB - Micropropagation (shoot tip and nodal cuttings culture) was used for the rapid propagation of the non-invasive, decorative, native plants of maiden pink (Dianthus deltoides L.) in order to preserve their genetic diversity. In vitro culture was successfully established on Murashige and Skoog medium (MS) using seeds as the initial material. In the shoot multiplication phase, the explants were cultured on MS medium supplemented with different concentrations of 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) and naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA). The highest multiplication rate was achieved on a medium containing 0.1 mgL(-1) of BAP and 0.1 mgL(-1) of NAA. The rooting was successful on a hormone-free medium (100%), and the highest percentage of microplant acclimatization (97%) was recorded in a 4: 1 mixture of peat and sand.

AB - Paulownia elongata is an ornamental, fast-growing species and resistant to urban conditions. It was successfully adapted to the growing conditions in Serbia. Twelve-year-old elite tree, originating from a plantation in Bela Crkva was used as stock plant for the experiments. In vitro culture was successfully established using disinfection of nodal segments of annual shoots with 0.1% HgCl2 for 10 min. The most favorable shoot multiplication response (6.7 shoots per explant) was recorded on MS medium supplemented with 6 mg l(-1) BA and 0.5 mg l(-1) IBA, and rooting was successful (95%) on MS medium with 0.8 mg l(-1) of IBA and the same amount of NAA.

AB - Stojnic S., S. Orlovic, A. Pilipovic, D. Vilotic, M. Sijacic Nikolic, and D. Miljkovic (2012): Variation in leaf physiology among three provenances of european beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) in provenance trial in Serbia. - Genetika, Vol 44, No. 2, 341-353. The paper presents the results of investigation of variability of net photosynthesis (A), transpiration (E), stomatal conductance (gs) and water use efficiency (WUE) of three European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) provenances in the provenance trial established on Fruska Gora Mt. Provenances originate from three localities along a gradient from the north to the south of Europe: Pfalzgrafenweiler (Germany), Grenchen (Swiss) and Valkonya (Hungary). Results indicate that observed parameters were influenced both by environmental conditions of sites and genetic constitution of provenances. On the basis of ANOVA procedure it was observed significant differences among provenances in terms of rate of transpiration (p lt = 0.037) and water use efficiency (p lt = 0.011), while differences regarding net photosynthesis and stomatal conductance were not statistically significant. Canonical discriminant analysis (CDA) was performed in order to estimate multivariate relations among analyzed physiological parameters. Provenances were separated by the first canonical axis (CD1), which described 96.4% of variability. Provenance from the driest site (Valkonya) showed the highest water use efficiency, indicating on high potential for afforestation programmes in more arid areas.
