Synthesis and Structure of New 5-(Arylidene)-3-(4-methylbenzoyl)thiazolidine-2,4-diones

AB  - The derivatives of 5-substituted-2,4-thiazolidinedione have a broad spectrum of biological activities. In this article, new 5-(arylidene)-3-(4-methylbenzoyl)thiayolidine-2,4-diones 3a-k, with arylidene groups such as 4-phenylbenzylidene 3a, 3,4-dimethoxybenzylidene 3b, 2-hydroxybenzylidene 3c, 4-ethoxybenzylidene 3d, 5-methyl-2-furfurylidene 3e, 4-dimethylaminobenzylidene 3f, 1-naphthylidene 3g, 3,4-methylenedioxybenzylidene 3h, 4-benzyloxybenzylidene 3i, benzylidene 3j, and 4-methoxybenzylidene 3k, were synthesized by direct acylation of alkali metal salts of 5-arylidene-2,4-thiazolidinediones with 4-methylbenzoylchloride. Their structures were confirmed by elemental analysis, IR, H-1 NMR and MS spectroscopy. In addition, crystal structure of the compound 3d was determined using single-crystal X-ray diffraction data.

Thermal, oxidative and radiation stability of polyimides. Part IV: Polyimides based on N-[4-benzoyl-2-(2,5-dioxo-2,5-dihydro-pyrrol-1-yl)-phenyl]-acetamide and different diamines

AB  - Polyimide resins were obtained from the reaction between N-[4-benzoyl-2-(2,5-dioxo-2,5-dihydro-pyrrol-1-yl)-phenyl]-acetamide and the following compounds with terminal amino groups: urea, 4-[(4-aminophenyl)sulfonyl] aniline, thiourea, 2-aminoethylamine, and 4.4'-diaminodiphenylmethane. The thermal and thermooxidative behaviour of the polyimide resins was studied by thermogravimetric measurements (TG) in oxygen and nitrogen. Polyimide resins have been irradiated (500 kGy) and their radiation stability evaluated on the basis of thermal and thermooxidative behaviour of irradiated samples. The thermal and oxidative degradation of the examined polyimides is complex and occurs in two phases. The first step occurs in both nitrogen and oxygen but it is somewhat less pronounced in oxygen due to oxidation and formation of more stable products. All samples showed very good radiation stability and there is almost no change in the first degradation step while the span of the peaks in the second step is narrowed and temperatures are slightly lower.

AB  - Chemical structure and concentrations of coupling agents are the most important in choosing appropriate coupling action between polymer matrix and wood filler in composites. In this study, the efficiency of new amido-acrylic acid (AMACA) coupling agent synthesized for this propose at the Forestry Faculty of the Belgrade University, was compared with two well-known commercial coupling agents, anhydride of maleic acid (in the form of maleated polypropylene MAPP) and silane A-1100 (gamma-aminopropyltriethoxy silane). The polypropylene-wood flour (PP-WFl) composites were produced with 40% of wood particles having a fraction size of 0.3 mm. The melt-blended composites were modified with coupling agents in amounts of 1.7, 4.0 and 6 wt.% (based on wood filler) and successively with 0.05 wt.% (based on PP) of organic peroxide during the mixing step. The composites containing coupling agents showed superior mechanical properties, compared with the untreated ones. The highest extent of improvement of tensile and impact properties was achieved with PP-WFl composites modified by an AMACA coupling agent.
