AB - In this paper, the variability of morphological (stem height, stem basal diameter, proportion of pith, wood and bark) and wood anatomical characteristics (fiber length, fiber diameter, fiber lumen diamater, double cell-wall thickness, vessel diameter, wood rays width and height) of three Salix alba clones (B-44, 347 and NS 73/6) and one Salix viminalis clone both in the control plot and in the site contaminated with a mixture of heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb) was investigated. The observed results showed that individuals of all four clones had significantly higher average values of stem height and stem basal diameter at the control plot compared to the polluted site. As for the proportion of pith, bark and wood, heavy metals caused an increase in the share of pith and a decrease in the share of bark and wood in all clones with the exception of clone NS 73/6. The analysis of wood fiber dimensions showed that the values of all parameters were higher at the control site with the exception of fiber lumen diameter where higher values were observed for clones B-44 and NS 73/6 at the polluted site. Higher values of vessel diameter were recorded for all clones at the control plot, while wood rays width of all individuals was greater at the contaminated site. Regarding the wood rays height, only Salix viminali s showed higher value at the polluted site. These results confirmed that pollution-induced heavy metal stress significantly altered the morphological and wood anatomical characteristics of all researched clones and that it may affect their utility properties.

AB - Variation in seedlings height and diameter in the zone of root collar of nine European beech provenances from southeast Europe was examined at two trial sites in Serbia (Fruška Gora and Debeli Lug). Provenance trials were established during the spring of 2007 and arranged in randomized complete block design. Results are presented for the seedlings age of 10 years. Provenance means for the studied traits were 267.2 cm and 49.09 mm at site Fruška Gora; and 230.8 cm and 33.53 mm, at site Debeli Lug, respectively. Significant site (p lt 0.001) and provenance (p lt 0.001) effects were detected in the studied traits. Two out of nine provenances (RS60 and RS69) changed their ranks in height growth across the two sites. The greatest mean value for height growth, at both trial sites, was observed in Serbian provenance RS67 (302.4 cm and 268.4 cm, respectively). The same provenance had the highest mean values of diameter in the zone of root collar (55.9 mm and 39.6 mm, respectively), as well. The presented provenance research results are important for future activities on tree breeding and conservation of the European beech genetic pools.

AB - Fifteen provenances of European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) were evaluated for stability and adaptability by height growth at four test sites in Bosnia and Herzegovina (1), Croatia (1) and Serbia (2). Provenance trials were established in spring 2007 by planting 2- and 3-year old seedlings and arranged in a randomized complete block design. The data from seven 6-year-old and eight 5-year-old provenances were obtained in 2009 and analyzed separately. Finlay and Wilkinson's regression analysis and Additive main effects and multiplicative interaction model (AMMI model) were used to assess provenance by site interaction (P x S) and to identify beech provenances that have high and stable performance in different environments, at the juvenile stage of development. Analysis of variance showed that effects of provenance, site, and P x S interaction are highly significant (p lt 0.001) in both age groups. Linear regression model evidenced that most of the provenances had regression coefficients not significantly different from unity (b=1.0), except for provenances Sjeverni Dilj Caglinski (HR24) and Vranica-Bistrica (BA59). The partitioning of the total sum of squares (SS) exhibited that the site effect was the predominant source of variation in both age groups of provenances (50.7% and 38.5%, respectively). Additionally, regression analysis explained 15.8% and 33.2% of provenance by site interaction terms, in provenances age six and five years, respectively, while the AMMI analysis accounted for 62.2% and 78.7% in P x S interaction. The results of AMMI showed that the first principal component (PC1) was statistically significant in both age groups. Adaptability and stability of provenances to the test sites were estimated with AMMI1 and AMMI2 biplots. Provenance Sjeverni Dilj Caglinski (HR24) showed constant performance over tested sites, characterizing with above average height growth at low yielding environments. Provenances HR25 and BA61 showed the opposite type of adaptation, being adapted to high yielding sites. Provenance Valkonya (HU42) was characterized by IPCA1 score close to zero and above average mean height growth, suggesting general adaptation to the tested environments. The implication of P x S was discussed in light of impact of climate change on beech and selection of most suitable provenances for future reforestation programs.

Miljkovic (2012): Variation in leaf physiology among three provenances of european beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) in provenance trial in Serbia. - Genetika, Vol 44, No. 2, 341-353. The paper presents the results of investigation of variability of net photosynthesis (A), transpiration (E), stomatal conductance (gs) and water use efficiency (WUE) of three European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) provenances in the provenance trial established on Fruska Gora Mt. Provenances originate from three localities along a gradient from the north to the south of Europe: Pfalzgrafenweiler (Germany), Grenchen (Swiss) and Valkonya (Hungary). Results indicate that observed parameters were influenced both by environmental conditions of sites and genetic constitution of provenances. On the basis of ANOVA procedure it was observed significant differences among provenances in terms of rate of transpiration (p lt = 0.037) and water use efficiency (p lt = 0.011), while differences regarding net photosynthesis and stomatal conductance were not statistically significant. Canonical discriminant analysis (CDA) was performed in order to estimate multivariate relations among analyzed physiological parameters. Provenances were separated by the first canonical axis (CD1), which described 96.4% of variability. Provenance from the driest site (Valkonya) showed the highest water use efficiency, indicating on high potential for afforestation programmes in more arid areas.

AB - Prvi provenijenični testovi bukve u Srbiji su osnovani u proleće 2007. godine u okviru COST akcije E52: 'Evaluation of Beech Genetic Resources for Sustainable Forestry'. S toga je u radu dat detaljan, uporedni prikaz: a) klimatskih karakteristika lokaliteta, b) pedoloških karakteristika lokaliteta i c) stepen prisutnosti i pokrovnosti predstavnika korovske vegetacije.
AB - The first provenance trials of European beech in Serbia were established in spring of 2007 in the framework of COST Action E52: 'Evaluation of Beech Genetic Resources for Sustainable Forestry'. Trials are placed on two localities: Fruška Gora Mountain (northern part of Serbia) and Debeli Lug (eastern part of Serbia). In the previous years, several studies regarding variability and adaptability of different European beech provenances were conducted in these sites. In order to understand the complex effect of site characteristics on provenance performances, it was needed examination of environmental characteristics of given localities. Therefore, the aim of this study is detail, comparative analysis of: a) climate characteristics of sites, b) pedological characteristics of sites and c) degree of presence and cover value of weed flora. Annual and mean monthly values of major climate elements, significant for the development of vegetation are presented: mean temperature, sum of precipitations, pluviometric and hydric balance, climate-geographical characteristics - thermodrome coefficient after Kerner, Lang's rain factor, pluviometric hazard and drought index after De Martonn. Climate type was determined using Thornthwaite-Mather and Lang's method. Pedological characteristics are given throught the physical and chemical properties of soil. Phytocenological observations were performed using Braun-Blaquet method. Life form of plants was determined after Raunkiaer. Results revealed significant differences in environmental characteristics between sites Fruška Gora Mt and Debeli Lug, which could lead to different performances of provenances depending on site of planting.

AB - In this study, the variability of physiological parameters of five provenances of European beech (Fagus sylvatica), which were planted at two locations with different ecological conditions at Fruška Gora and Debeli Lug, was estimated. Provenance trials were established in the framework of COST Action E52: "Evaluation of Beech Genetic Resources for Sustainable Forestry". 2-3 years old seedlings originating from Croatia, Germany, Bosnia, Austria and Serbia were planted in blocks of fifty plants with a spacing of 2 × 1 m. Physiological parameters such as net photosynthesis, rate of transpiration and stomatal conductance were measured with a portable gas analysis system. Generally, provenances from Fruška Gora Mountain showed higher intensity of all physiological parameters than provenances located at site Debeli Lug. High correlations among rates of net photosynthesis and transpiration, on one side, and stomatal conductance, on the other side, were found. ANOVA test indicates that variability of net photosynthesis, transpiration and stomatal conductance of investigated provenances, at the two locations, was influenced both by environmental conditions of sites and genetic constitution of provenances.
