AB - Forest biodiversity studies conducted across Europe use a multitude of forestry terms, often inconsistently. This hinders the comparability across studies and makes the assessment of the impacts of forest management on biodiversity highly context-dependent. Recent attempts to standardize forestry and stand description terminology mostly used a top-down approach that did not account for the perspectives and approaches of forest biodiversity experts. This work aims to establish common standards for silvicultural and vegetation definitions, creating a shared conceptual framework for a consistent study on the effects of forest management on biodiversity. We have identified both strengths and weaknesses of the silvicultural and vegetation information provided in forest biodiversity studies. While quantitative data on forest biomass and dominant tree species are frequently included, information on silvicultural activities and vegetation composition is often lacking, shallow, or based on broad and heterogeneous classifications. We discuss the existing classifications and their use in European forest biodiversity studies through a novel bottom-up and top-driven review process, and ultimately propose a common framework. This will enhance the comparability of forest biodiversity studies in Europe, and puts the basis for effective implementation and monitoring of sustainable forest management policies. The standards here proposed are potentially adaptable and applicable to other geographical areas and could be extended to other forest interventions.

AB - Rosemary-leaved willow (Salix rosmarinofolia L.) is a rare and protected species in Serbia. The research was based on ecological characteristics of this species (climatic, vegetational and edaphic) as well as its taxonomical characteristics in Vojvodina region -the northern part of Serbia, where two rosemary-leaved willow sites occur (Subotica-Horgos sand and Deliblato sand). The climate is temperate continental. This willow is the dominant species in two ecologically very similar plant communities, Holoschoeno-Salicetum rosmarinifoliae Stjep. Vesel. 1953. in Deliblato sand and Festucetum vaginatae mixtum Gaj. 1986. salicetosum rosmarinifoliae (Mag 1953) Soo 1939 in Subotica-Horgos sand. These communities are strongly xerophilous, when it comes to moisture requirements. They are strongly intolerant to light and they prefer alkaline soils. In relation to warmth, they are mesothermal to thermophilous. Hemicryptophytes are the dominant life form in the spectrum of life forms, followed by phanerophytes and therophytes. Pontic-Central Asian group is the most frequent in the spectrum of floral elements. Two varieties of Salix rosmarinifolia L. are present-var. rosmarinifolia, which dominates in both localities and var. argyotricha. The geological bedrock on both localities is made of sand, and soils belong to Glaysol (Calcaric, Arenic). Fraction of fine sand absolutely dominates, humus content is relatively low, while soil reaction is mildly alkaline. Soils are poorly supplied with phosphorus, while the potassium supply is somewhat better. Occurrence of rusty-grayish zones in deeper soil layer indicates fluctuation in underground water level and reduction-oxidation processes.

AB - This paper deals with the cenoecological characteristics of Greek maple (Acer heldreichii Orph.) in Serbia, a subendemic species of the Balkan Peninsula which is a strictly protected species in Serbia. The research included the six most representative Greek maple localities in Serbia. Plant communities were defined according to standard Braun-Blanquet method. Ecological spectra (life forms, plant relation to moisture, soil reaction, nitrogen content in soil, light and warmth), as well as chorological spectra were produced. CA vegetation analysis was done using software CANOCO 4.5. It is concluded that Greek maple in Serbia occurs in two plant communities: as a dominant species in beechGreek maple community (Aceri heldreichii-Fagetum B. Jov. 1957) and as a differential species in beechfir-spruce community (Piceo-Abietetum Colic 1965 subass. aceretosum heldreichii). CA analysis distinguishes phytocoenological releves in three groups. According to life forms spectrum, plant communities have hemicryptophyte-geophyte- phanerophyte character. According to moisture requirement they are mesophilous, according to soil reaction they are mostly neutrophilous, to soil nitrogen content communities are mostly mesotrophic. According to light requirements they range from shade tolerant to semitolerant, and according to the temperature they are mesothermic. Results of chorological analysis show that the Central European floral group is the most frequent, which indicates the mesophilous character of the communities.

AB - A new motpellier maple (Acer monspessulanum L.) site was described in this paper, located on mountain Boranja, in forest management unit "Istočna Boranja", above Roguljski potok, on Glogovita kosa ridge. Montpellier maple occurs on elevations between 460 and 480 m a.s.l., on southwestern and western aspect, on very steep slopes with inclination 45° to 50°. The site area is 874 m2 , and coordinates of site centre are: l=19°13'49.0" and ph=44°25'21.33". In this site, Montpellier maple occurs in a plant community of hop-hornbeam and manna ash, and considering that Montpellier maple was recorded in all three layers, and that it occurs abundantly in shrub and ground layers, a subassotiation with montpellier maple was set apart (Ostryo carpinifoliae-Fraxinetum orni subass. aceretosum monspessulanii). According to floristic composition, most plant species belong to the submediterranean floral type, so this community represents an enclave of submediterranean vegetation in the belt of continental beech forests. The community is of azonal character, orographically-edaphically conditioned, and occurs in warmer aspects, on shallow and skeletal rendzina on oolithic limestones.

AB - Given the importance of urban park forests and protected natural areas in the urban environment, the implementation of the concept of genetic conservation is one of the main ways to save and improve this category of natural resources. Forests such as Košutnjak can be considered a refuge for flora and fauna and by establishing conservation programs for certain species, the entire ecosystem would be better protected. The purpose of this paper is to elaborate a systematic approach to in situ conservation of forest genetic resources in urban areas through the example of four native oak species: pedunculate oak, sessile oak, Hungarian oak and downy oak in the protected natural area "Košutnjak"in the capital of Serbia - Belgrade, to develop replicable conservation guidelines for urban park forests. The methodological framework for the development of guidelines for genetic conservation, presented in this paper, is a replicable model whose basic principles can be applied in other cases of urban park forests.

AB - For forest sites mapping in Serbia distinctive methodology was applied, which incorporated, apart from available maps and data, the results of detailed field research of sites, soils and vegetation also. Applied methodology was developed by joint work of team of Serbian and German experts during 2016 2017. Concept of forest sites mapping was implemented and tested on the area of Boranja Mt., located in western part of Serbia. Research encompassed mountain beech forests located between 600 and 900 m a.s.l, on dystric cambisol on granodiorite bedrock. Work on soil mapping consisted of following phases: collecting of available digital maps and other data connected to site, detailed site research (soil and vegetation conditions), synthesis and analysis of obtained results and production of appropriate soil type maps.

Zajednica bukve i vresa predstavlja degradacioni stadijum bukovih šuma.
AB - Two new heather (Calluna vulgaris (L.) Hull.) sites, located in Đerdap National park, on plagioclastic gneiss and podsolised dystric brown soil are described in this paper. Heather is the dominant species in the plant community with beech on these sites (Calluno-Fagetum moesiacae Cvj. 2003). This community is floristically poor and edaphically conditioned. Beech (Fagus sylvatica. subsp. moesiaca (Maly) Czeczott) is the only species in the tree layer, while heather dominates in the ground layer. According to the spectrum of areal types, mesic plant species of middle-European distribution type are dominant, with a significant share of plants of the xerothermous submediterranean distribution type. According to the biological spectrum, hemicryptophytes dominate in this community with a significant share of chamaephytes, which indicates deteriorated site conditions. According to the moisture requirements, the community is xeromesophillous, acidophillous according to soil reaction, according to the nitrogen content in soil it is highly oligotrophic, according to the light it is semi-tolerant, and according to the warmth requirement the community is mesothermic. The community of beech and heather represents a degradation stage of beech forests.

AB - This paper presents the results of a study dealing with leaf morphological variability of Quercus robur L. 148 trees were sampled from 5 population across Serbia and 17 morphological traits were assessed. Interpopulation variability was confirmed by the results of the analysis of variance (ANOVA). A statistically significant (p lt 0.05) effect of population was obtained for most of the studied morphological characters. Intrapopulation variability was confirmed by statistically significant tree effects for all of the studied leaf characters (all p lt 0.05). The results of the multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) confirmed a significant population and tree share in the total phenotypic variability (all p lt 0.05). By applying the canonical discriminant analysis (CDA), the first discriminant function accounted for 63% of the variability between populations and the second accounted for 20% of the population variability. The leaf area (AREA), specific leaf area (SLA) and surface area to perimeter ratio (ARPE) had the greatest effect on population differentiation (CDA). It is assumed that different environmental conditions affect population differentiation and that high intrapopulation variability is due to intraspecific variability.

AB - The foreign tree species, Alnus cordata/Loisel./ Desf. (Italian alder), (Betulaceae/ Loisel./ Duby), not previously recorded in the dendroflora of Serbia, is described in this paper. Italian alder trees in an experimental plot in the area of Erdevik, aged 11 years, show good vitality and fast growth, and bear fruits since their 10th year. Tree heights are in range from 10.4 to 16.2 m, and diameters at the breast height range from14.6 to 34.9 cm. The morphological properties of leaves, fruiting organs ('cones') and male catkins are in concordance with the values in literature sources, although they show great variability. Since the time of plantation establishment, the absolute minimum air temperature in the nearby meteorological station of Sremska Mitrovica was -26.50C, so it can be assumed that the species is frost hardy. On the basis of the researched properties of Italian alder, it can be concluded that this species can be cultivated in Serbia as an ornamental in urban areas and as a fast growing species in forest plantations for biomass production.

AB - Genetically-modified (GM) trees represent a new frontier in biotechnology, though many environmental concerns associated to the commercial use of GM trees and their products have been recently raised. In general, GM trees involve no safety issues related to human health, therefore public attitudes toward their commercial use should depend on environmental concerns or personal philosophical viewpoints, but also on educational level and background. To assess the relevance of the educational level and background on attitudes toward acceptance of commercial GM tree cultivation, a survey was conducted in January 2014 among 400 students from the Faculty of Forestry of the University of Belgrade and from the Faculty of Applied Ecology "Futura" at the University Singidunum (Belgrade). The aim was to determine whether different educational profiles and educational level significantly affect students' attitudes toward GM trees. Results showed no significant differences in the responses among students from both faculties. All students showed a good knowledge of GM trees and agreed that different genetic modifications of forest trees would be very important for their country. Also, more than a half of students from both faculties would agree with commercial planting of GM trees and would purchase their final products. However, 70 to 90% of students from both faculties considered the hazards associated with the commercial use of GM trees as "serious hazard" or "slight hazard". The implication of the above results are discussed.

AB - U radu je prikazana strana vrsta Carya illinoinensis (Wangenh.) K. Koch, karija-pekan, (Juglandaceae A. Richard ex Kunth) koja do sada nije navedena u dendroflori Srbije.
AB - This paper presents the alien species Carya illinoinensis (Wangenh.) K. Koch, carya-pecan, (Juglandaceae A. Richard ex Kunth) that has not been mentioned so far in the dendroflora of Serbia. One tree was recorded within the first Serbian sugar factory in Čukarica that is now a protected cultural property in the City of Belgrade. The tree is about 35 years old and about 20 m high. The length of the trunk without branches is 6.0 m and the diameter at breast height is 57 cm. Carya-pecan is a native species of the southeastern part of North America, and is grown in Europe for edible fruits and quality wood. The recorded tree in Belgrade is fruitful and characterized by good vitality and rapid growth. Due to its special characteristics, it can have multiple practical application in the territory of Serbia for decoration in urban areas, for forest plantations and in orchards.

AB - Istraživanja su izvršena u prirodnim sastojinama hrasta kitnjaka (Quercus petraea agg. Ehrendorfer 1967) na teritoriji planine Miroč. Proučene su tri zajednice: čista šuma hrasta kitnjaka (Quercetum montanum Čer. et Jov. 1953. s.l.), šuma kitnjaka i graba (Querco-Carpinetum moesiacum Rud. 1949. s.l.) i šuma bukve i kitnjaka (Querco-Fagetum Gliš. 1971).
AB - This research was carried out in natural stands of sessile oak (Quercus petraea agg. Ehrendorfer 1967) on Miroč mountain. Three comunities were investigated: pure sessile oak forest (Quercetum montanum Čer. et Jov. 1953. s.l.), sessile oak-common hornbeam forest (Querco-Carpinetum moesiacum Rud. 1949. s.l.) and sessile oak-balkan beech forest (Querco-Fagetum Gliš. 1971). Pure sessile oak forests are found on the following soils: dystric ranker and okw cambic soil on sandstone, dystric ranker and acid cambisols on phyllite, and acid cambic soil on schists. Sessile oak-hornbeam forests grow on sandstone, granite and schists. Sessile oak-beech forests are found on acid cambisol on phyllite and sandstone conglomerate. Various ecological conditions (aspect, slope, altitude, soil types and bedrock) on Mt Miroč caused the occurence of diverse sessile oak forest communities, while different states of these forest stands resulted from the implementation of management measures.

AB - The association of beech and fir was researched on Mt. Suvobor, on serpentinite bedrock. In the past, the beech and fir forest on Suvobor was not studied, it was just referred to, so the objective of this paper was to study the floristic characteristics of this forest, which will enable its ecological-vegetational differentiation and widen the knowledge on beech and fir associations on serpentinites. The studied plant community is characterised by poor floristic composition and by the absolute domination of fir in the tree layer. In the life form spectrum, the dominant plants are phanerophytes, and the percentage of geophytes is increased, which points out the mesophilous plant community. The spectrum of floral elements indicates the dominance of the Central-European floral element, but also a significant percentage of some more xerophilous elements, which is the consequence of a specific parent rock.

AB - Ecological and floristic characteristics of the new subassociation of the Balkan beech and Greek maple plant community with hornbeam (Aceri heldreichii-Fagetum subass. carpinetosum betuli) were studied. This subassociation is recorded and described on Mt. Rudnik, where it occurs at the elevations 950- 1,050 m, on moderate to steep inclinations (10-30°), and cold aspects: northern, northwestern and northeastern. Bedrock consists of sandstones and mudstones. The biological spectrum, ecological spectra and spectrum of distribution types of this community were calculated. The community has phanerophyte-hemicryptophyte character, it is mesophilous regarding soil moisture requirements and temperature requirements, it is neutrophilous to soil acidity, according to light requirements it is tolerant to semi-tolerant. The most numerous group of distribution types is Central European, which confirms the mesophilous character of this community.

AB - The taxonomic characteristics of Greek maple (Acer heldreichii Orph) were studied based on the analysis of leaf characteristics, by comparative-morphological method. The study was performed at three localities in central Serbia: Goč, Jastrebac and Rudnik. 30 normally developed trees were selected per each locality, and 30 leaves were selected from each tree for the analysis. The study includes 8 measured and 15 derived characteristics of leaves. The study results were statistically processed by correlation analysis, analysis of variance and cluster-analysis. It is concluded that there are two varieties, var. heldreichii and var. macropterum. Four forms are set aside in the variety macropterum: f. typicum f. dissectum, f. Equiloba and f. rotundiloba. The populations are relatively homogeneous, and both varieties occur at all three localities in significant numbers.

Za prikupljanje i korišćenje mogu se preporučiti: Hypericum perforatum L., Asperula odorata L., Dryopteris filix-mas (L) Schott., Urtica dioica L., Euphorbia amygdaloides L., Prunella grandiflora L., Tanacetum vulgare L., Achillea millefolium L., Rumex acetosa L., Campanula glomerata L., Stachys officinalis (L) Trevis., Plantago lanceolata W. et K., Potentilla erecta (L) Rauchel, Chamaespartium sagittale (L) P. Gibbs., Cynanchum vincetoxicum (L) Pers., Euphrasia stricta Host., Fagus moesiaca (Matt) Liebl. i Fragaria vesca L.
AB - The high floristic diversity of Stara Planina was the starting base for the research of medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs) in individual forest and meadow communities. The sites Javor and Prelesje, forest community Fagetum moesiacae montanum B. Jov. 1953, pioneer community of birch Betuletum verrucosae s.l. and meadow community Agrostietum vulgaris (capillaris) Pavlović, Z. 1955, were researched as follows: soil types, floristic composition and structure of the community, percentage of MAPs, as well as the selection of species which, according to the predetermined criteria can be recommended for further exploitation. The study shows that the soil of the forest communities is eutric brown, and meadow soils are dystric and eutric humus-siliceous. The percentage of MAPs in the floristic structure of the study sites in forest and meadow communities is 32.35%. The following species can be recommended for the collection and utilisation: Hypericum perforatum L., Asperula odorata L., Dryopteris filix-mas (L) Schott. Urtica dioica L., Euphorbia amygdaloides L., Prunella grandiflora L. Tanacetum vulgare L., Achillea millefolium L., Rumex acetosa L., Campanula glomerata L., Stachys officinalis (L) Trevis., Plantago lanceolata W. et K., Potentilla erecta (L) Rauchel, Chamaespartium sagittale (L) P.
