Variability of dry film thickness of a coating applied by roller coater on wood in a real industrial process

AB  - This study investigates variation in the dry film thickness (DFT) of a coating applied by roller coater on the surface of wood in real industrial conditions on a UV finishing line. It was examined how DFT is influenced by the temperature of the liquid top coating, the position of the sample on the conveyor, and the position of the measurement point along the length of the sample. The three-way interaction between the temperature of the liquid top coating, position on the conveyor and position along the sample did not have a statistically significant impact on DFT. However, an increase in the temperature of the liquid top coating (from 24.1 to 24.8 degrees C) caused a decrease in the viscosity of the coating and a significant reduction in DFT when samples were positioned closer to the coating supply hose or in the middle of the conveyor. When the temperature of the liquid top coating was lower, the variation in DFT at different positions across the conveyor was not significant. A higher temperature of liquid top coating led to significantly smaller DFT for samples closer to the supply hose and in the middle, compared with those further from the supply hose. It was also found that DFT was greater at the forward end then at the back end of sample.

Premazi visokog sjaja - uticaj hrapavosti površine na sjaj

AB  - Očvrsnuo film premaza uvek sadrži određene nepravilnosti koje su posledica postupka i uslova nanošenja. Iz tog razloga u cilju postizanja visokog sjaja lakirane površine, uz primenu premaza visokog stepena sjaja neophodno je poliranje lakirane površine tj. brušenje lakirane površine vrlo sitnim brusnim zrnima. U ovom radu ispitano je kako pojedine faze procesa poliranja utiču na hrapavost lakirane površine i stepen sjaja. Hrapavost lakirane površine izražena je parametrima: Ra; Rz i Rt; a sjaj lakirane površine je određen primenom dve geometrije merenja: 20o i 60o.Utvrđeno je da kroz faze poliranja hrapavost lakirane površine opada, a stepen sjaja raste. Visoka vrednost koeficijenta determinacije (R = 0,984) pokazala je da postoji linearna zavisnost između parametra hrapavosti Ra i sjaja lakirane površine (mereno pod uglom od 60o). Primena dve geometrije merenja (20o i 60o) je potvrdila potrebu primene geometrije od 20o kada se određuje sjaj visoko sjajnih površina, jer standardna geometrija od 60˚ ne obezbeđuje sagledavanje malih razlika u stepenu sjaja koje nastaju kao posledica poliranja.
AB  - The cured finishes always contain certain irregularities that result from the technique and conditions of application. For this reason, in order to achieve smooth high gloss finished surfaces, it is necessary to polish ('rub-out') surfaces coated with high gloss finish. Rubbing means sanding the finished surfaces with very fine abrasive grits. In this paper we explored how each phase of the polishing process affect the surface roughness and the gloss of coated surface. The surface roughness was expressed by the parameters: Ra, Rz and Rt, and the gloss was determined by reflectometer (measurement angles 20˚ and 60˚). The results showed that through the stages of polishing, surface roughness decreased, while gloss of finished surface increased. The high value of the coefficient of determination (R2 = 0,984) indicated the linear dependence between the roughness parameter Ra and gloss of finished surface (at measuring angle of 60˚). The comparison of gloss results obtained by two measuring angles, confirmed the need for using the angle of 20˚ when determining the gloss of high gloss surfaces, since universal angle of 60˚ did not provided insight to small differences in the gloss that appeared as a result of polishing.

Uticaj postupka pripreme površine drveta na adheziju određenih vrsta premaza

AB  - Cilj ovoga rada je bio utvrđivanje optimalnog sistema pripreme podloge bukovog drveta (Fagus Silvatica L.) u cilju postizanja viših vrednosti adhezije pojedinih vrsta premaza. Rezultati ispitivanja su pokazali da se obradom drveta brušenjem dobijaju niže vrednosti parametara hrapavosti u površinskom sloju u odnosu obradu drveta glodanjem. Smanjivanje hrapavosti podloge u površinskom sloju rezultovalo je porastom adhezije 2K akril - izocijanatog premaza. Kada je lakiranje vršeno primenom 1K vodorazredivog premaza, više vrednosti adhezije su zabeležene na površinama sa većom hrapavosti podloge. Direktna veza između hrapavosti podloge i adhezije 2K poliuretanskog premaza nije pronađena. Mehanizam adhezije između 1K vodorazredivog premaza i podloge drveta je prvenstveno zasnovan na mehaničkom vezivanju, dok je adhezija 2K akril - izocijanatog premaza i drveta zasnovana na drugim mehanizmima vezivanja.
AB  - In order to achieve an enhancement of adhesion of specific type of coating to the surface of beech wood (Fagus Sylvatica L.), the optimum substrate preparation system was determined regarding the specific coating formulation. The results showed that lower values of surface roughness parameters can be obtained by the sanding process than by the planning process. These lower values of surface roughness enable higher adhesion of a 2K acrylic-isocyanate coating. In cases where coating is performed with a 1K waterborne coating, higher values of adhesion were observed on the surfaces with higher surface roughness. Direct correlation between surface roughness and adhesion of a 2K polyurethane coating was not found. The adhesion between a 1K waterborne coating and the wood substrate is primarily based on a mechanical bonding (entanglement), while the adhesion of a 2K acrylic-isocyanate coating is primarily based on the other bonding mechanisms.

A photochemical method for improvement of color stability at polymer-wood biointerfaces

AB  - The possibility of photochemical improvement of color stability by UV-irradiation treatment at coating-wood biointerfaces was investigated. The surface of beech wood was partially delignified by exposure to UV-irradiation by passing of samples under UV lamps: a mercury (Hg) lamp with a peak wavelength of 366 nm, a gallium (Ga) lamp with peak wavelengths at 410 and 420 nm and a combination of a mercury and a gallium (Hg + Ga) lamp. After UV-irradiation, the samples were coated with a UV-curable acrylic coating. The number of passes under the lamps was varied to determine the optimum combination of the number of passes and the lamp type that produces the smallest change in color of the coated wood in an indoor environment. The coated samples that had been UV-irradiated by passing 15 times under both an Hg lamp and a Ga lamp showed the smallest change in color (decrease in the Delta E by 23.23% compared to the untreated coated samples) after 72 h of accelerated artificial sunlight exposure. Microscope images of the same samples showed deformation of the cells in wood surface layer and a roughening of the "wood-coating line", which could be related to a partial removal of lignin. These findings suggest that delignification of wood leads to more photo-stable polymer-wood interfaces in terms of color.

Uticaj bajcovanja drveta trešnje (Prunus avium L.) na adheziju premaza

AB  - U radu je ispitan uticaj bajcovanja drveta trešnje (Prunus avium L.) na vrednosti adhezije tri najčešće korišćene vrste premaza u drvnoj industriji: nitroceluloznog (NC), poliuretanskog (PU) i vodorazredivog (WB) premaza. Bajcovanje je vršeno korišćenjem dve vrste bajca: vodenog i nitro bajca. Bajcovanje drveta trešnje dovelo je do porasta hrapavosti, izraženo preko parametra Ra, za 49,1 % kada je površina tretirana vodenim bajcem, odnosno za 5,1 % kada je površina tretirana nitro bajcem. Vrednost adhezije premaza na površini drveta je merena metodom rešetke i metodom pečatnika. Upoređenju različitih vrsta premaza, najniže vrednosti adhezije pokazali su uzorci lakirani NC premazom (3,29 MPa), dok su uzorci lakirani PU i WB premazom pokazali značajno više vrednosti adhezije (6,96 i 7,91 MPa, respektivno). Bajcovanje drveta trešnje vodenim ili nitro bajcem ima pozitivan uticaj na vrednost adhezije NC i PU premaza, dok kod primene WB premaza uticaj bajcovanja na vrednost adhezije nije zabeležen.
AB  - This paper investigates the impact of the staining of cherry wood (Prunus avium L.) on the adhesion value of three most commonly used types of coatings in the wood industry: nitrocellulose (NC), polyurethane (PU) and water-based (WB) coating. Staining was done using two types of stains: water-based and nitro-based stain. Staining of cherry wood led to an increase in surface roughness, expressed by the parameter Ra for 49.1% when the surface was treated with water-based stain, and for 5.1 % when the surface was treated with nitro-based stain. The value of adhesion of coating on the substrate surface was measured by 'cross-cut test' and 'pull-off test'. Comparing different types of coatings, the samples lacquered with NC coating expressed the lowest value of adhesion (3.29 MPa), and the samples that were lacquered with PU coating and WB showed significantly higher adhesion values (6.96 and 7.91 MPa, respectively). Staining of cherry wood with water-based or nitro-based stains had positive impact on the value of adhesion of NC and PU coating, while the effect of staining on the adhesion of WB coating was not observed.

Staining of cherry wood led to an increase in surface roughness, expressed by the parameter Ra for 49.1% when the surface was treated with water-based stain, and for 5.1 % when the surface was treated with nitro-based stain. The value of adhesion of coating on the substrate surface was measured by 'cross-cut test' and 'pull-off test'. Comparing different types of coatings, the samples lacquered with NC coating expressed the lowest value of adhesion (3.29 MPa), and the samples that were lacquered with PU coating and WB showed significantly higher adhesion values (6.96 and 7.91 MPa, respectively). Staining of cherry wood with water-based or nitro-based stains had positive impact on the value of adhesion of NC and PU coating, while the effect of staining on the adhesion of WB coating was not observed.",

Najviše vrednosti utiskujuće tvrdoće pokazali su uzorci lakirani 2K akril-izocijanatnim premazom, kod obe drvne vrste (1,34 N za smrču; 1,4 N za hrast), dok su najviše vrednosti otpornosti na grebanje (20 N kod obe drvne vrste) i otpornosti na abraziju (gubitak mase premaza od 480 mg nakon 700 ciklusa kod obe drvne vrste) pokazali uzorci lakirani 2K alkid-uretanskim premazom. Ispitivanja su pokazala da drvna vrsta nema uticaja na vrednosti utiskujuće tvrdoće, otpornosti na grebanje i otpornosti na abraziju lakirane površine.
AB  - This paper investigates the impact of the top coating on the basic mechanical properties of a lacquered surface, including indentation hardness, scratch resistance and abrasion resistance. Three types of the top coating were used, including a 2K polyurethane coating, a 2K acrylate-isocyanate coating and a 2K alkyd-urethane coating. AB  - U radu je ispitivan uticaj drvne vrste i formulacije premaza u završnom sloju na vrednosti adhezije očvrsnulog filma premaza. Uzorci smrče i hrasta lakirani su 2K poliuretanskim premazom u osnovnim sloju, dok su u završnom sloju korišćene tri vrste premaza: 2K poliuretanski, 2K akril-izocijanatni i 2K alkid-uretanski premaz. Merenje adhezije je vršeno metodom rešetke i metodom pečatnika. Lakirani uzorci hrasta pokazali su od 27,41 do 38,98 % više vrednosti adhezije mereno metodom pečatnika, u odnosu na lakirane uzorke smrče. U poređenju različitih vrsta premaza u završnom sloju najviše vrednosti adhezije, mereno metodom pečatnika, pokazali su 2K akril-izocijanatni (3,72 MPa za uzorke smrče i 5,45 MPa za uzorke hrasta) i 2K alkid-uretanski premaz (3,76 MPa za uzorke smrče i 5,49 MPa za uzorke hrasta). Određena odstupanja u oceni adhezije metodom rešetke u odnosu na vrednosti adhezije dobijene metodom pečatnika pokazala su neophodnost primene više metoda u vrednovanju adhezije očvrsnulog filma premaza na površini drveta.
AB  - This paper investigates the impact of wood species and formulation of coating in the top layer to the adhesion of cured coating. The samples of spruce and oak wood were coated with 2K polyurethane coating in the basic layer, while three types of coatings were used in the top layer: 2K polyurethane, 2K acrylic-isocyanate and 2K alkyd-urethane coating. Measurement of adhesion was performed by the cross-cut and pull-off method. The samples of oak wood showed for 27.41 to 38.98% higher values of adhesion measured by pull-off test, compared to the samples of spruce wood. Cilj rada je bio određivanje najznačajnijih mehaničkih svojstava lakirane površine, sa stanovišta upotrebe Paulownia elongata i Paulownia fortunei, uz primenu različitih sistema površinske obrade drveta. Za ispitivanje adhezije premaza korišćen je metod rešetke. Obuhvatniji prikaz adhezije premaza dobijen je merenjem otpornosti na grebanje. Otpornost na abraziju je ispitana metodom slobodnog pada abrazivnih čestica. Primenjeni sistem brušenja nije imao uticaja na ispitivana mehanička svojstva. Bajcovani uzorci lakirani PU premazom pokazali su bolju adheziju u odnosu na nebajcovane uzorke. Uticaj bajcovanja na otpornost na grebanje nije utvrđen. Bajcovani uzorci pokazali su veću otpornost na abraziju kod obe drvne vrste. Više vrednosti mehaničkih svojstava pokazali su uzorci lakirani PU premazom u poređenju sa uzorcima lakiranim UV akrilnim premazom. Primena PU premaza za površinsku obradu Paulownia elongata i Paulownia fortunei je adekvatnija od primene UV akrilnog premaza, sa stanovišta otpornosti na grebanje i abraziju.
AB  - This paper presents the research of influence of sanding, staining and the use of polyurethane and acrylic coating on the adhesion, scratch resistance and abrasion resistance of the coating. Objective was to determine the most important mechanical properties of lacquered surfaces, considering the application of Paulownia elongata and Paulownia fortunei, by using different systems of surface finishing. Cross cut method was used for measurement of adhesion. More accurate view of coating adhesion was obtained by measuring the scratch resistance. Abrasion resistance was tested by the method of free falling of abrasive particles. The applied system of sanding had no effect on the examined mechanical properties. Stained samples lacquered with PU coating showed better adhesion to the non-stained samples. Impact of staining on scratch resistance is not established. Stained samples showed greater resistance to abrasion for both wood species. Samples lacquered with PU coating showed the higher values of mechanical properties compared with samples lacquered with UV acrylic coating. Application of PU coating for surface finishing of Paulownia elongata and Paulownia fortunei is more adequate than the application of UV acrylic coatings, from the point of scratch resistance and abrasion resistance.

AB  - U ovom radu ispitivan je uticaj pripreme površine podloge na sposobnost kvašenja poliuretanskih lakova metodom kontaktnog ugla. Uzorci su izrađeni od dve vrste paulovnije (Paulownia elongata i Paulownia fortunei). Svi uzorci su obrađeni rendisanjem (glodanjem), posle čega je vršena obrada brušenjem pri čemu su uzorci podeljeni u grupe. Za svaku grupu u odnosu na pravac drvnih vlakana, određen je sistem obrade brušenjem, zasnovan na numeraciji brusnog papira, redosledu smenjivanja brusnih traka različite numeracije i pravcu brušenja. Kvalitet pripreme podloge posle brušenja izražen je preko parametara hrapavosti u sistemu 'M': Ra, Rz, Rv, Rp i Rt. Za merenje kontaktnog ugla korišćen je transparentni poliuretanski (PU) lak i destilovana voda. Vrednosti kontaknog ugla dovedene su u vezu sa sistemom brušenja preko parametra hrapavosti Ra.
AB  - This paper presents the research of influence of wood surface preparation on the wetting ability of polyurethane coatings, by the method of contact angle. The samples were made of two species of Paulownia (Paulownia elongata and Paulownia fortunei). All the samples were processed by planing (molding). After molding, the samples were arranged in groups and sanded. In relation with wood grain direction, each group had a particular system of sanding, based on the numbering of sanding paper, program of displacement of sanding papers with different numbering and the direction of sanding. The quality of wood surface after sanding was expressed by the values of roughness parameters in the system 'M': Ra, Rz, Rv, Rp and Rt. The contact angle was measured using transparent polyurethane (PU) coating and distilled water. The influence of the system of sanding on the values of contact angle was analyzed by roughness parameter Ra.

Za svaku grupu u odnosu na pravac drvnih vlakana, određen je sistem obrade brušenjem, zasnovan na numeraciji brusnog papira, redosledu smenjivanja brusnih traka različite numeracije i pravcu brušenja. Kvalitet pripreme podloge posle brušenja izražen je preko parametara hrapavosti u sistemu 'M': Ra, Rz, Rv, Rp i Rt. Za merenje kontaktnog ugla korišćen je transparentni poliuretanski (PU) lak i destilovana voda. Vrednosti kontaknog ugla dovedene su u vezu sa sistemom brušenja preko parametra hrapavosti Ra., This paper presents the research of influence of wood surface preparation on the wetting ability of polyurethane coatings, by the method of contact angle. The samples were made of two species of Paulownia (Paulownia elongata and Paulownia fortunei). All the samples were processed by planing (molding). After molding, the samples were arranged in groups and sanded. In relation with wood grain direction, each group had a particular system of sanding, based on the numbering of sanding paper, program of displacement of sanding papers with different numbering and the direction of sanding. The quality of wood surface after sanding was expressed by the values of roughness parameters in the system 'M': Ra, Rz, Rv, Rp and Rt. The contact angle was measured using transparent polyurethane (PU) coating and distilled water. The influence of the system of sanding on the values of contact angle was analyzed by roughness parameter Ra.",
