Variability of dry film thickness of a coating applied by roller coater on wood in a real industrial process

AB  - This study investigates variation in the dry film thickness (DFT) of a coating applied by roller coater on the surface of wood in real industrial conditions on a UV finishing line. It was examined how DFT is influenced by the temperature of the liquid top coating, the position of the sample on the conveyor, and the position of the measurement point along the length of the sample. The three-way interaction between the temperature of the liquid top coating, position on the conveyor and position along the sample did not have a statistically significant impact on DFT. However, an increase in the temperature of the liquid top coating (from 24.1 to 24.8 degrees C) caused a decrease in the viscosity of the coating and a significant reduction in DFT when samples were positioned closer to the coating supply hose or in the middle of the conveyor. When the temperature of the liquid top coating was lower, the variation in DFT at different positions across the conveyor was not significant. A higher temperature of liquid top coating led to significantly smaller DFT for samples closer to the supply hose and in the middle, compared with those further from the supply hose. It was also found that DFT was greater at the forward end then at the back end of sample.

A photochemical method for improvement of color stability at polymer-wood biointerfaces

AB  - The possibility of photochemical improvement of color stability by UV-irradiation treatment at coating-wood biointerfaces was investigated. The surface of beech wood was partially delignified by exposure to UV-irradiation by passing of samples under UV lamps: a mercury (Hg) lamp with a peak wavelength of 366 nm, a gallium (Ga) lamp with peak wavelengths at 410 and 420 nm and a combination of a mercury and a gallium (Hg + Ga) lamp. After UV-irradiation, the samples were coated with a UV-curable acrylic coating. The number of passes under the lamps was varied to determine the optimum combination of the number of passes and the lamp type that produces the smallest change in color of the coated wood in an indoor environment. The coated samples that had been UV-irradiated by passing 15 times under both an Hg lamp and a Ga lamp showed the smallest change in color (decrease in the Delta E by 23.23% compared to the untreated coated samples) after 72 h of accelerated artificial sunlight exposure. Microscope images of the same samples showed deformation of the cells in wood surface layer and a roughening of the "wood-coating line", which could be related to a partial removal of lignin. These findings suggest that delignification of wood leads to more photo-stable polymer-wood interfaces in terms of color.

AB  - U ovom radu ispitan je uticaj brušenja, operacije bajcovanja i primene poliuretanskog i akrilnog premaza na adheziju, otpornost na grebanje i otpornost na abraziju premaza. Cilj rada je bio određivanje najznačajnijih mehaničkih svojstava lakirane površine, sa stanovišta upotrebe Paulownia elongata i Paulownia fortunei, uz primenu različitih sistema površinske obrade drveta. Za ispitivanje adhezije premaza korišćen je metod rešetke. Obuhvatniji prikaz adhezije premaza dobijen je merenjem otpornosti na grebanje. Otpornost na abraziju je ispitana metodom slobodnog pada abrazivnih čestica. Primenjeni sistem brušenja nije imao uticaja na ispitivana mehanička svojstva. Bajcovani uzorci lakirani PU premazom pokazali su bolju adheziju u odnosu na nebajcovane uzorke. Uticaj bajcovanja na otpornost na grebanje nije utvrđen. Bajcovani uzorci pokazali su veću otpornost na abraziju kod obe drvne vrste. Više vrednosti mehaničkih svojstava pokazali su uzorci lakirani PU premazom u poređenju sa uzorcima lakiranim UV akrilnim premazom. Primena PU premaza za površinsku obradu Paulownia elongata i Paulownia fortunei je adekvatnija od primene UV akrilnog premaza, sa stanovišta otpornosti na grebanje i abraziju.
AB  - This paper presents the research of influence of sanding, staining and the use of polyurethane and acrylic coating on the adhesion, scratch resistance and abrasion resistance of the coating. Objective was to determine the most important mechanical properties of lacquered surfaces, considering the application of Paulownia elongata and Paulownia fortunei, by using different systems of surface finishing. Cross cut method was used for measurement of adhesion. More accurate view of coating adhesion was obtained by measuring the scratch resistance. Abrasion resistance was tested by the method of free falling of abrasive particles. The applied system of sanding had no effect on the examined mechanical properties. Stained samples lacquered with PU coating showed better adhesion to the non-stained samples. Impact of staining on scratch resistance is not established. Stained samples showed greater resistance to abrasion for both wood species. Samples lacquered with PU coating showed the higher values of mechanical properties compared with samples lacquered with UV acrylic coating. Application of PU coating for surface finishing of Paulownia elongata and Paulownia fortunei is more adequate than the application of UV acrylic coatings, from the point of scratch resistance and abrasion resistance.

AB  - U ovom radu ispitivan je uticaj pripreme površine podloge na sposobnost kvašenja poliuretanskih lakova metodom kontaktnog ugla. Uzorci su izrađeni od dve vrste paulovnije (Paulownia elongata i Paulownia fortunei). Svi uzorci su obrađeni rendisanjem (glodanjem), posle čega je vršena obrada brušenjem pri čemu su uzorci podeljeni u grupe. Za svaku grupu u odnosu na pravac drvnih vlakana, određen je sistem obrade brušenjem, zasnovan na numeraciji brusnog papira, redosledu smenjivanja brusnih traka različite numeracije i pravcu brušenja. Kvalitet pripreme podloge posle brušenja izražen je preko parametara hrapavosti u sistemu 'M': Ra, Rz, Rv, Rp i Rt. Za merenje kontaktnog ugla korišćen je transparentni poliuretanski (PU) lak i destilovana voda. Vrednosti kontaknog ugla dovedene su u vezu sa sistemom brušenja preko parametra hrapavosti Ra.
AB  - This paper presents the research of influence of wood surface preparation on the wetting ability of polyurethane coatings, by the method of contact angle. The samples were made of two species of Paulownia (Paulownia elongata and Paulownia fortunei). All the samples were processed by planing (molding). After molding, the samples were arranged in groups and sanded. In relation with wood grain direction, each group had a particular system of sanding, based on the numbering of sanding paper, program of displacement of sanding papers with different numbering and the direction of sanding. The quality of wood surface after sanding was expressed by the values of roughness parameters in the system 'M': Ra, Rz, Rv, Rp and Rt. The contact angle was measured using transparent polyurethane (PU) coating and distilled water. The influence of the system of sanding on the values of contact angle was analyzed by roughness parameter Ra.
