Comparative analysis of the influence of climate factors on the radial growth of autochthonous pine species ( pinus spp.) In central Bosnia and Herzegovina

AB  - In central Bosnia and Herzegovina, in the Zavidovici-Teslic area, the study of the radial growth of Austrian and Scots pine (autochthonous pine species) trees was conducted using the dendrochronological method in order to identify the differences between the species in terms of the influence of climatic variables on the tree ring formation. Trees were sampled in five experimental areas or five sites. The first site had a Scots pine stand, while the second had an Austrian pine stand, and the other three sites had mixed stands of Scots and Austrian pine. Cross-dating was conducted using visual on-screen techniques of CDendro software and statistical methods using Cofecha software. The tree ring series were standardized using the Arstan program and cubic smoothing spline. It produced Scots pine regional chronology, 145 years long (1870-2014), and Austrian pine regional chronology, 180 years long (1835-2014). Correlation analysis of the relationship between the index of tree-ring width and precipitation and temperature in the characteristic periods of the year showed a negative effect of temperature (except in winter months) and a positive effect of precipitation on the tree ring formation. The statistically significant dependence of the tree-ring width index on the SPEI indices indicates a significant impact of moisture deficiency on the tree ring formation in the period from June to August (r = 0.33 in June, r = 0.45 in July and r = 0.47 in August) for Scots pine and in the period from June to September (r = 0.36 in June, r = 0.43 in July, r = 0.47 in August and r = 0.30 in September) for Austrian pine. The analysis of the relationship between climatic parameters and the chronologies of Scots and Austrian pine shows similar relationships between radial growth and climate but the influence of climate is somewhat more pronounced in Austrian pine. In the study area, the radial growth of both tree species is significantly determined by climate conditions. In other words, the chronology of these species has a good climatic signal, especially the drought signal in the summer months.

AB  - The paper presents the results of testing the bending stress of Serbian spruce wood from natural stands. In testing the samples, in addition to the modulus of rupture, the bending stress at the proportionality limit, the ratio between the stress at the proportionality limit and the modulus of rupture as well as the modulus of elasticity of wood were determined. The study included nine trees from natural stands, and a total of 261 samples were tested. Regression analysis determined the dependences of these mechanical properties on the annual ring width, the proportion of late wood and wood density, as well as the dependence of the modulus of elasticity on the modulus of rupture.

AB  - U radu su prikazani rezultati dendroklimatološke analize rasta jele na po-dručju planine Borja, Bosna i Hercegovina. Potrebni podaci su uzeti na 2 lokaliteta, a uzorkom je obuhvaćeno ukupno 60 serija radijalnog prirasta (15 dominantnih stabala po lokalitetu sa po dva izvrtka). Provedena je standardna dendrohronološka obrada i analiza podataka primenom softvera Coffecha i Arstan. Dobijena je preliminarna regi-onalna hronologija jele za područje planine Borja, dužine 137 godina (1878-2014. godi-na). Dobijeni rezultati korelacione analize između indeksa radijalnog prirasta de-finisane hronologije, sa jedne strane i padavina i temperature po mesecima, sa druge strane, pokazali su da veće količine padavina u leto izraženo povećavaju prirast jele, a da povećanje temperature u ovim mesecima ne izaziva značajnu redukciju prirasta. Rezultati primene FAI indeksa suše u navedene svrhe pokazali su da intenzivnije suše u letnjim mesecima mogu izazvati značajnu redukciju prirasta jele na datom području.
AB  - This paper presents the results of a dendroclimatological analysis of the growth of fir trees in the Borja mountain area, Bosnia and Herzegovina. The required data were taken in 2 sites, and the sample covered a total of 60 series of radial increment (15 dominant trees per site with two cores). Standard dendrochronological processing and data analyses using the Coffecha and Arstan software were performed. The preliminary 137-years long regional fir chronology for the Borja mountain area was obtained. The obtained results of the correlation analysis between the radial increment index of the defined chronology, on the one hand, and the monthly precipitation and temperature, on the other, showed that higher summer pre-cipitation significantly increased the increment of fir, and that the increase in temperature in these months did not not cause a significant increment reduction. However, the results of the FAI drought index application for the stated purposes have shown that more intense droughts in the summer months can cause a significant reduction in the increment of fir in a given area.

AB  - U ovom radu prikazani su rezultati ispitivanja napona na pritisak drveta Pančićeve omorike iz kultura i prirodnih sastojina. Ispitan je napon na pritisak upravno na vlakanca pri dejstvu sile u radijalnom i tangencijalnom pravcu. Za uslovnu graničnu dilataciju uzeta je dilatacija od 1%, a odgovarajući napon za uslovni granični napon. Analizom je obuhvaćeno šest stabala iz kultura i devet stabala iz prirodnih sastojina. Ukupno je ispitano 309 epruveta. Regresionom analizom je ispitana zavisnost ovih mehaničkih svojstava od širine prstenova prirasta, učešća kasnog drveta i gustine drveta.
AB  - This paper presents the results of testing the compression of Serbian spruce wood from plantations and natural stands. Compression perpendicular to grain in radial and tangential direction was tested. A dilatation of 1% was taken for a conditional boundary dilatation, and the appropriate strength for the conditional limit strength was taken. Six trees from plantations and nine trees from natural stands were analyzed. In total, 309 samples were tested. The regression analysis examined the dependence of these mechanical properties on the width of the annual rings, the percentage of late wood and wood density.

AB  - U radu su prikazani rezultati ispitivanja osnovnih fizičkih svojstava smrčevog drveta iz kultura u okolini Banja Luke. Ispitivani su: zavisnost širine prstena prirasta i gustine drveta, gustina, zapreminska poroznost utezanje, tačka zasićenosti vlakanaca i apsorpcija vlage. Analizirano su tri stabla, prosečne starosti oko 16 godina. Statistički su obrađeni podaci za prsnu visinu i ukupno za sve epruvete, od prsne visine do 9,3 m. Ispitivanjem i analizom osnovnih fizičkih svojstava smrčevog drveta iz kultura dobijeno je da je uticaj širine prstena prirasta na gustinu negativan i da je ta zavisnost logaritamska, potvrđujući ranije rezultate. Prosečna vrednost gustine drveta je manja od uobičajne vrednosti koju nalazimo u literaturi. Prosečna vrednost radijalnog utezanja iznosi 3,90%, a tangencijalnog 8,10%. Ova istraživanja potvrđuju da postoji linearna zavisnost između nominalne gustine i zapreminskog utezanja drveta smrče i da gustina negativno utiče na faktor površinske anizotropije. Na prsnoj visini, prosečna vrednost faktora površinske anizotropije iznosi 2,16, zapreminska poroznost 72%, a TZV 32,6%. Prosečna brzina apsorpcije iznosi 3,42% po danu, za prvih 7 dana, a za poslednjih 30 dana 0,12% po danu. Izvršeno je i poređenje rezultata ispitivanja sa rezultatima drugih autora.
AB  - The basic physical properties of spruce wood from plantations in the surroundings of Banja Luka were researched. The dependence of growth ring diameter and wood density, density, volume porosity, shrinkage, fibre saturation point and absorption of moisture were analysed on three trees average age about 16 years. The data for breast height and for all specimens from breast height to 9.3 m were statistically processed. The research and analysis of the basic physical properties of plantation-grown spruce wood shows that the effect of growth ring diameter on the density is negative and that the dependence is logarithmic, which confirms the previous results. Average value of wood density is lower than the usual value reported in references. Average value of radial shrinkage is 3.90%, and tangential 8.10%. This research confirms the linear dependence between the nominal density and volumetric shrinkage of spruce wood and that density has a negative effect on the coefficient of surface anisotropy. At breast height, average value of the coefficient of surface anisotropy is 2.16, volume porosity 72%, and fibre saturation point 32.6%. Average rate of absorption is 3.42% per day, for the first 7 days, and 0.12% per day for the last 30 days. The study results were compared to the results reported by other authors.
