AB - The relationship between the quality of forest seedlings and their outplanting survival and growth has long been recognized. Various attributes have been proposed to measure the quality of planted seedlings in forest regeneration projects, ranging from simple morphological traits to more complex physiological and performance attributes, or a combination thereof. However, the utility and meaning of seedling quality attributes can differ significantly among regions, nursery practices, site planting conditions, species and the establishment purpose. Here, forest scientists compiled information using a common agreed questionnaire to provide a review of current practices, experiences, legislation and standards for seedling quality across 23 European countries. Large differences exist in measuring seedling quality across countries. The control of the origin of seed and vegetative material (genetic component of plant quality), and control of pests and diseases are common practices in all countries. Morphological attributes are widely used and mandatory in most cases. However, physiological attributes are hardly used at the operative level and mainly concentrated to Fennoscandia. Quality control legislation and seedling quality standards are less strict in northern European countries where seedling production is high, and quality control relies more on the agreements between producers and local plant material users. In contrast, quality standards are stricter in Southern Europe, especially in the Mediterranean countries. The control of seedling quality based on plantation and reforestation success is uncommon and depends on the conditions of the planting site, the traditional practices and the financial support provided by each country. Overall, European countries do not apply the "target seedling concept" for seedling production except for seed origin. Seedling production in many countries is still driven by traditional "know-how" and much less by scientific knowledge progress, which is not adequately disseminated and transferred to the end-users. Our review highlights the need for greater harmonization of seedling quality practices across Europe and the increased dissemination of scientific knowledge to improve seedling quality in forest regeneration activities.

AB - Natural wild cherry populations in Serbia are a part of the southern border of this valuable forest tree species distribution range. The survival of these marginal provenances in Serbia as well as in the wider region is threatened by climate change, small population sizes, low competitiveness, etc. Therefore, it is recommended to artificially assist population regeneration while increasing their genetic diversity. Although knowledge of the amount and pattern of the specie's genetic diversity is a prerequisite for its effective conservation and use, related research in the region is scarce. The main goal of this study was to determine the amount and pattern of phenotypic variability of natural wild cherry populations in Serbia. Possible link between revealed pattern of phenotypic variability and genetic differentiation of the provenances was discussed. Fruits were collected in nine natural populations. Ten morphological traits of the fruits were measured, and average germination rate of the provenances was assessed. The least variable trait was the fruit width (CV = 6.2%), while the most variable trait was the petiole thickness (CV = 29.4%). Analysis of variance revealed significant among-provenance variation for investigated fruit characteristics (p lt 0.01; alpha = 0.05), except for the petiole thickness (p = 0.92). Although variability among provenances was significant, the level of within-population variability was much higher (41.2-52.1%) than among-provenance differentiation (5.3-15.2%). The pattern of among-provenance variation was determined by a correlation analysis between provenance mean values and their climatic-geographical variables, whereby fruit thickness and petiole length proved to be useful diagnostic traits. Mean fruit thickness was significantly and positively correlated with altitude (R = 0.69; p = 0.04), annual precipitation as snow (R = 0.80; p = 0.01), and annual degree-days below 0 degrees C (R = 0.70); p = 0.04). The average petiole length was significantly and negatively correlated with the annual precipitation as snow (R = -0.69; p = 0.04), while it was positively correlated with annual heat to moisture index (R = 0.71; p = 0.03). The results revealed an ecoclinal pattern of phenotypic differentiation among the provenances due to their habitat's altitude and other ecological variables closely related to altitude. Although this study basically dealt with phenotypic variability of wild cherry fruits originating from natural populations, the results indicate likelihood for genetic differentiation of the provenances due to altitude. This likelihood provides the basis for recommending vertical seed zonation, as well as congruent use of reproductive material for assisted restoration of wild cherry populations in Serbia. However, to confirm this presumption of ecoclinal pattern of genetic differentiation, it is necessary to conduct analyses of various phenotypic traits in common garden experiments (e.g. provenance trials) as well as analyses of appropriate DNA markers.

AB - To assess the genetic potential of the reproductive material source, we studied the variability of 10 pedunculate oak groups at the level of morphometric characteristics of seed and one-year-old seedlings. In autumn 2017, acorns were collected from the seed stand RS-2-2-qro-11-828, whose primary purpose is the production of quality seed for artificial forest regeneration. Over the entire stand area, ten groups of five mother trees were selected for seed collection. A sample of 50 acorns per group was used to measure the length, width, and mass of the acorn. The obtained values were used to calculate the shape index (length to width ratio) and volume (using the formula for the cylinder volume calculation) of the acorn. Nursery testing was initiated in the nursery of the Institute of Forestry in spring 2018 and the height and root collar diameter of 1+0 seedlings were measured. The average values obtained for the observed acorns and seedlings in the study indicated high intra-population variability. The results of the analysis of variance showed statistically significant differences between the sampled mother tree groups for all observed properties except for the acorn length. Based on the obtained results, the study seed stand can be evaluated as a high-quality stand for the production of reproductive material. The obtained results are only preliminary. However, they are a good starting point for the determination of diversity, all with the purpose of producing good quality oak reproductive material.

Oni predstavljaju dobru polaznu osnovu za utvrđivanje genetske raznolikosti, a sve u cilju proizvodnje kvalitetnog repromaterijala hrasta lužnjaka., To assess the genetic potential of the reproductive material source, we studied the variability of 10 pedunculate oak groups at the level of morphometric characteristics of seed and one-year-old seedlings. However, they are a good starting point for the determination of diversity, all with the purpose of producing good quality oak reproductive material.",

AB - U radu su analizirani morfološki parametri kvaliteta jednogodišnjih sadnica hrasta kitnjaka (Quercus petraea (Matt.) Liebl) i njihovi međusobni odnosi. Mereni su sledeći morfološki parametri: prečnik u korenovom vratu, visina sadnica, masa nadzemnog i podzemnog dela sadnica u apsolutno suvom stanju i zapremina korena.
AB - The paper analyzes the morphological quality parameters of one-year-old sessile oak (Quercus petraea (Matt.) Liebl) seedlings and their interrelations. Based on the performed analyzes, it was determined which of the measured morphological parameters, with minimal time and resources spent, gives the most accurate estimate of the quality of one-year old seedlings. For the conducted research, seedlings were produced in the nursery of the Institute of Forestry in Belgrade, in uniform environmental conditions from seed collected in seed stand RS-2-2-qpe-22-169. The seedlings were produced in the same nursery seedbed, and the sample for analysis was taken by dividing the seedbed into four sections and taking 30 seedlings from each section by random sampling. The following morphological parameters were measured: root collar diameter, height of seedlings, weight of above and underground part of seedling in absolutely dry condition and root volume. Based on the measured values, height ratios were calculated as follows: height:root collar diameter, weight of aboveground part of seedling: weight of underground part of seedling, and quality index. The height of the seedlings and root collar diameter are good indicators of quality, which is confirmed by the positive correlative relationships with other measured morphological parameters. A stronger dependence has been found in the root collar diameter, especially with the quality index, so it can be recommended as a good indicator of the quality of the one-year old sessile oak seedlings. The quality index has been confirmed as the most comprehensive morphological indicator of the seedling quality.

AB - Pedunculate oak (Quercus robur L.) is one of the most important deciduous tree species in the Serbian and European forests. Different negative factors limit natural regeneration of pedunculate oak forests, so producing of high quality seedlings becomes imperative to ensure successful forest restoration. This research was conducted with to aim to determine whether acorn size is related to seedlings quality. Acorns were collected from the natural pedunculate oak forest and divided into two groups by their size. Acorns were sown in the spring into plastic containers after five months cold storage. Size of acorns was in the standard species range, though germination was low ( lt 20 %). Germination was more then double in group of large acorns in comparison to group of smaller acorns (19.2 %, respectively 8.6 %). Height and root collar diameter of produced seedlings were lower than seedlings produced in seedbeds in commercial nurseries in Serbia, but it was in range of container produced seedlings in some similar researches. Height to root collar diameter ratio and shoot to root ratio were considered as satisfactory for containerized seedlings. There was not strong correlation between acorn size and seedlings quality attributes.

AB - The paper presents the results of an analysis of morphometric characteristics of Norway spruce seedlings in the progeny tests in Bosnia and Herzegovina, localities: Drinić and Srebrenica. Progeny tests were established by using seedlings originating from six natural populations from Bosnia and Herzegovina. Seedling height, root collar and whorl distance from the ground, which represents seedling heights in 2011, 2012 and 2013 were measured. The results indicate statistically significant differences between the analyzed characteristics of the observed population. Especially interesting are the populations Potoci and Olovo, which showed the highest growth during the observed period in both progeny tests. The impact of the drought in 2013 can be seen in the progeny test in Srebrenica where height growth in 2013 was lower by more than 50% in comparison to 2012. The impact of drought in the progeny test in Drinić was not observed. The research provides the baseline when selecting the starting population, where the rapid growth of seedlings is set as the main goal.

Istraživanja daju polazne osnove u selekcionisanju polaznih populacija, a kao glavni cilj postavlja se brz porast sadnica., The paper presents the results of an analysis of morphometric characteristics of Norway spruce seedlings in the progeny tests in Bosnia and Herzegovina, localities: Drinić and Srebrenica. The research provides the baseline when selecting the starting population, where the rapid growth of seedlings is set as the main goal.",

AB - Wild cherry (Prunus avium L.) is the most important European tree species in the family Rosaceae (Russell 2003). It is very valuable forest species that grows in mixed forests in Southern, Central and Western Europe. In the growing stock of Serbia wild cherry falls into the category of species at risk (Bankovic et al. 2009) to which is not paid enough attention. The researches of population structure and genetic variability at the level of genotypes and/or populations are the basis for the knowledge on the adaptive and genetic potential of wild cherry in some area. The morphological variability of leaves in nine natural populations of wild cherry (Prunus avium L.) in Serbia was studied in this paper. The research material was collected in nine natural populations of wild cherry in Serbia (Figure 1, Slika 1). The leaves from ten trees per population were collected while every tree was presented with 50 healthy and intact leaves. The leaves were collected from borderline trees or trees located in an isolated position usually from the southern exposed part of the crown, from its outer well-lit part. Leaf morphological characteristics were described by descriptive statistical indicators: arithmetic mean (x), standard deviation (SD), coefficient of variation (CV). In order to determine the intra-population and inter-population variability the univariate analysis of variance (ANOVA) was performed. Results obtained by performed statistical analysis of studied morphological characteristics of wild cherry leaves showed that the most variable characteristic is the leaf surface area (LA). The analysis of variance (ANOVA) confirmed presence of statistically significant differences between values of the arithmetic means of the studied characteristics on both inter- and intra-population level. Populations varied the most in the petiole length (PL) and the smallest differences were observed in the leaf length (LL). Intra-population variability is greater than inter-population variability. Based on the conducted researches it can be concluded that in the studied wild cherry populations a high rate of variability of the studied leaf morphological characteristics was determined. The obtained results are the basis for the continuation of the research that needs to be conducted in order to provide guidelines and recommendations for the conservation and targeted use of genetic resources of this species in Serbia and beyond. For a complete knowledge on the variability of wild cherry in a part of the natural area the research should be expanded by the use of molecular markers.

AB - In this paper are presented results of the analysis of inter-line variability of morphometric characters of Bald cypress juvenile seedlings at the level of 20 half-sib lines. Obtained results contribute to better understanding of relationship of analyzed characters, as well as the influence of analyzed characters to the differentiation of half-sib lines. Based on these results, differences were observed in the values of the analyzed characters for each half-sib line individually. The determined values of seedlings' size indicate good genetic and adaptive potential of this species, which can be considered as a starting point for the mass production of quality planting material and its use in Serbia.

AB - In this paper are presented the results of an analysis of intrapopulation variability using morphometric markers of 20 Bald cypress test trees originating from seed stand S 01.10.01.01 near Backa Palanka. The morphometric characters of cones (length, width and number of grains) and seedlings (root collar diameter and height of seedling) that were produced by this seed were analyzed. A mutual biological similarity or distance of mother trees depending on the analyzed characters was tested. The determined values of the dimensions of cones and seedlings indicate the good genetic and adaptive potential of this species, which can be a starting point for the mass production of Bald cypress seed and planting materials in Serbia.

AB - Taksodijum je jednodomi, dugovečni listopadni četinar. Pripada familiji Taxodiaceae i rodu Taxodium.
AB - Bald cypress is monoecious, long-lived, deciduous conifer. It belongs to the family Taxodiaceae and genus Taxodium. In Serbia, there is only Taxodium distichum (L.) Rich. that mostly can be found in the green areas of major cities. The possibility of wider application of Bald cypress as a forest species should be based on an assessment of its genetic and adaptive potential, quantity and quality of yield, primarily at the level of the existing Bald cypress seed stand. In this paper are presented research results of the variability in cone morphometric characters among 20 test trees. The determined values of cone dimensions indicate good genetic and adaptive potential of this species that can be considered as starting point for the mass production of quality seed and planting material in Serbia.

abstract = "Taksodijum je jednodomi, dugovečni listopadni četinar. Pripada familiji Taxodiaceae i rodu Taxodium. The determined values of cone dimensions indicate good genetic and adaptive potential of this species that can be considered as starting point for the mass production of quality seed and planting material in Serbia.",

AB - Background and Purpose: Knowledge of the interaction between plant and climatic conditions is of great importance in establishment of new forests, especially in the introduction. Taxodium is an allochthonous species in Europe and this paper presents the data on the success of its introduction and adaptability to site conditions.
Material and Methods: For the analysis of the climate characteristics in Bačka Palanka have been used the data of the Republic Hydrometeorological Service of Serbia for the period 1981-2010 regarding meteorological station Rimski Šančevi. Dendrometric analysis was performed on the dominant trees of Taxodium by taking an increment core at breast height using Pressler drill. On the increment cores was measured diameter increment per each year of the observed period. By the regression analysis was determined the correlation between the diameter increment and climate elements.
Results and Conclusion: By research of influence of climate factors on the diameter increment of Taxodium trees can be concluded that with increasing of values of mean annual temperature and mean temperature during the growing season comes to a reduction in size of the diameter increment. The increase of the quantity of precipitation over a year, particularly during the growing season, leads to the increase of the diameter increment, and vice versa.
