AB - In this paper, the variability of morphological (stem height, stem basal diameter, proportion of pith, wood and bark) and wood anatomical characteristics (fiber length, fiber diameter, fiber lumen diamater, double cell-wall thickness, vessel diameter, wood rays width and height) of three Salix alba clones (B-44, 347 and NS 73/6) and one Salix viminalis clone both in the control plot and in the site contaminated with a mixture of heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb) was investigated. The observed results showed that individuals of all four clones had significantly higher average values of stem height and stem basal diameter at the control plot compared to the polluted site. As for the proportion of pith, bark and wood, heavy metals caused an increase in the share of pith and a decrease in the share of bark and wood in all clones with the exception of clone NS 73/6. The analysis of wood fiber dimensions showed that the values of all parameters were higher at the control site with the exception of fiber lumen diameter where higher values were observed for clones B-44 and NS 73/6 at the polluted site. Higher values of vessel diameter were recorded for all clones at the control plot, while wood rays width of all individuals was greater at the contaminated site. Regarding the wood rays height, only Salix viminali s showed higher value at the polluted site. These results confirmed that pollution-induced heavy metal stress significantly altered the morphological and wood anatomical characteristics of all researched clones and that it may affect their utility properties.

AB - Elevated concentrations of heavy metals result in soil degradation, a reduction in plant yields, and a lower quality of agricultural products, which directly endangers people, animals, and the ecosystem. The potential of three clones of Salix alba (347, NS 73/6, and B-44) and one genotype of S. viminalis for the phytoextraction of heavy metals was investigated, with the aim of identifying the most physiologically suitable willow genotypes for use in soil phytoremediation. The experiment was placed on the contaminated soil substrate collected in Kolubara Mining Basin (Serbia), enriched by high loads of heavy metal salts, and a control medium. Significant differences in the concentrations of heavy metals were recorded between the contaminated and control plant material, especially when it comes to nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb), confirming that S. alba and S. viminalis are hyperaccumulator species of heavy metals. Clone 347 shows the greatest uptake of Cd and chromium (Cr), and clone B-44 takes up these metals only to a lesser extent, while clone NS 73/6 shows a less pronounced uptake of Cr. The roots have the greatest ability to accumulate Ni and Pb, Cu is absorbed by all plant organs, while Cd is absorbed by the leaves. The organ that showed the greatest ability to accumulate heavy metals was the root, which means that willows have a limited power to translocate heavy metals to above-ground organs. The studied genotypes of S. alba have a higher potential for the phytostabilization of Cu and Cd, as well as the phytoextraction of Cd, compared with S. viminalis. The results confirm the assumption of differences between different willow genotypes in terms of the ability to phytoextract certain heavy metals from soil, which is important information when selecting genotypes for soil phytoremediation.

AB - In the paper, there have been analyzed petioles of the beech collected from ten natural populations in Serbia. Due to performing this research, different morphological and anatomical elements of the petiole have been observed. As for morphological elements, following have been included: petiole length (cm), petiole width (mm), and petiole thickness (mm), while quantitative anatomical elements included width of central cylinder (mm) and thickness of central cylinder (mm). On the other side, based on number, distribution and shape of vascular bundles, anatomical structure of the petiole was followed. Methods of descriptive statistics have been performed in order to determine variability of each element. From anatomical point of view, slight differences have been found between different populations. As for morphological features, petiole length is the least changeable, while petiole width is the most variable. Among quantitative anatomical features, central cylinder length is the least changeable. The vascular structure of petioles and their anatomy could successfully be used as a taxonomic character.

AB - There have been analyzed morho-anatomical characteristics of bald cypress needles from Topcider Park (Belgrade). In order to perform the research, it was chosen 5 test stems and from all of them, 20 needles from branches and 20 needles from the trunk were taken. By descriptive statistic methods, one-factor variance analysis method (ANOVA) and LSD-test, 7 observed elements have been analyzed (needle length, needle width, needle thickness, central cylinder width, central cylinder thickness, mesophyll width and mesophyll thickness). As for anatomical structure of needles, it was related to tissue defining and differentation grade of parenchyma cells as tissues constructive elements. From anatomical point of view, the greatest difference between needles from the branches and from the trunk is related to their maturation grade. All in all, there were established some differences between these two needle types not only from morphological, but also from anatomical point of view.

AB - This paper presents the results of air-pollutant influence on one-year and two-year old needles of Douglas-fir. The aim of this research was determining of resistance of these species. The analysis was performed on samples collected in a Douglas-fir culture established in polluted area of Kolubara coal basin during re-cultivation process of remained material. Control samples from unpolluted area were collected in Douglas-fir culture near mountain Juhor. There has been examined injuries of chlorenchyma cells, evaluating the degree of damage to the chlorenchyma tissue based on the stage of cell disruption which affected the way of the appearance of tannins in the central vacuole. The obtained results showed that the surface area of damaged chlorenchyma cells was significantly increased in polluted environment. At cellular level, there was no complete destruction of thylakoid system, and negative influence of air-pollutants before all affected changing of chloroplasts form, stroma granulation, increasing of thylakoid area, changing of plastoglobulins and collecting of fat in cytoplasm. This kind of changes in one-year and two-year old needles in samples originated from polluted area of Kolubara coal basin included numerous cells from chlorenchyma tissue. This confirms that Douglas-fir is not resistant on air-pollutants influence in researched area.

This confirms that Douglas-fir is not resistant on air-pollutants influence in researched area.",

AB - In the paper, there was analyzed participation of the latewood zone inside growth rings of bald cypress from two different locations in Serbia. Its proportion has been monitored depending on three factors growth rings width, age and stem height. Between growth rings width and latewood zone proportion was established negative correlation. For that reason, stems on Backa Palanka, whose growth rings are narrower, have greater latewood zone proportion compared to stems from Veliko ratno ostrvo, that have faster radial increment. Greater latewood proportion contributes to better mechanical and technical properties of the stems from Backa Palanka. As for relations between latewood proportion, from one side, and age and stem height, from the other side, there is also established negative correlation. Bearing on mind that bald cypress belongs to soft conifers, its latewood proportion almost never exceeds more than 1/3 of the whole growth rings width.

AB - Considering the importance of environment quality, especially in protected natural areas, we are conducted research of heavy metals contents (Zn, Mn and Fe) in plants and soil at protected natural area "Veliko ratno ostrvo" in Belgrade (Serbia). European white elm (Ulmus laevis Pall.) is native on the Veliko ratno Ostrvo Island and research were conducted in the aim to confirm possibility for using as bioindicator. The Veliko ratno ostrvo island represent unpolluted area, only two samples (total of 5 soil samples) show slightly exceed the value of Zn concentration (site 5 - 288.37 mg.kg(-1) and site 2 - 263.75 mg.kg(-1)) in soil, while concentrations of Mn and Fe are in normal range. Concentration of heavy metals in plant tissue is in the normal range, except Fe where there are concentrations over optimal range at 10 trees (up to 415.14 mg.kg(-1)) from total 13 tested trees. There are oscillations between different trees i.e. genotypes, which confirmed differences into absorption of heavy metals within species.

AB - The paper shows results of research of different light intensity impact on stomata number (stomata density-SD) and stomata area (stomata pore surface-SPS). There were analysed two Paulownia species Paulownia elongata and Paulownia fortune that grew under low and high light intensity. Basic testing hypothesis was related to characteristics of stomata between open and shaded treatment for each of analysed species, and to differences between stomata characteristics for each of species inside the treatment, as well. Due to results of t-test, average values of SD and SPS differed statistically significant for each of analysed species between various light treatments. Species differed statistically significant in average values of analysed stomata characteristics just in treatment with low light intensity. Based on three-way ANOVA results, all sources of phenotypic variability were statistically significant. Interaction between light treatment and species was statistically significant, as well, that shows different species response inside the treatment. Differences between species for analysed stomata characteristics depend on light intensity.

AB - How much of genetic diversity is desirable in mass production of forest reproductive material? How mass production of forest reproductive material reduces genetic diversity? Relation between genetic diversity and mass production of forest reproductive material is discussed in a holistic manner. In industrial forest plantations, narrow genetic diversity is desirable and reproductive material is produced at clone level. On the other hand, in conservation forestry a wide genetic diversity is imperative. Beside management goals, a desirable level of genetic diversity is related to rotation cycle and ontogeny of tree species. Risks of failure are lower in short rotations of fast growing species. In production of slow growing species, managed in long rotations, the reduction of genetic diversity increases the risk of failure due to causes unknown or unexpected at the time of planting. This risk is additionally increased in cases of seed transfer and in conditions of climate change. Every step in production of forest reproductive material, from collection to nursery production, has an effect on genetic diversity mainly by directional selection and should be considered. This review revealed no consistent decrease of genetic diversity during forest reproductive material production and planting.

AB - The concern for environmental protection has existed since the time of first human civilization. As society develops, the chain of changes during the natural flow of processes in ecosystems has been supplemented by a new link - pollutants. They have an effect on all other members of the ecosystem (changes may be visible immediately or harder to spot), which leads to an extremely complex relationship with nature. The values of some parameters of pollutants reached an alarmingly high level. The tendency to reduce the risk of air, soil, water, plant, and animal pollution to a tolerable limit, which would salvage the environment and most importantly human health, became a global problem. Heavy metals as pollutants have been an interest of researchers for their conduct, especially in forest ecosystems, which has been expressed in the previous year's more than ever. With its numerous toxic effects, heavy metals are endangering the existence of plant species that live in already contaminated environments. This is all an argument regarding the fight of modern society that the emission of polluted materials gets reduced in order to avoid multiple negative effects, which can endanger the existence of living organisms in general, as an argument for the continuation of numerous researches that are conducted in this area. The monitoring of heavy metals is of significant importance because their toxicity and accumulations are vital for the ecosystem. Polluted soils can be reduced and they can restore their function using physical, chemical, and biological techniques. Physical and chemical methods are very expensive and cause mainly irreversible changes, thus destroying biological variety. The biological recovery of contaminated soil represents an efficient method of reducing health risks for both mankind and the ecosystem. For this purpose, biological indicators are used. Numerous researches have led to improvements of the initial idea about using plants as a remediation of the environment and the removal of different contaminants from contaminated medias into promising technologies of environmental protection under the title 'Phytoremediation'. This technology consists of the reduction of concentrations of polluted materials in polluted soils, water, or air. Plants have the ability to store, degrade, or eliminate metals, pesticides, solutions, explosives, and crude oils. Its derivatives and various other contaminants form mediums that contain them. This paper especially considers methods of the possibility of the usage and application of plants in restoring soil contaminated by heavy metals as well as other pollutants.

AB - This paper shows correlations between vessel characteristics and differences in growth-ring width in heartwood and sapwood. Analyzed samples were from an iron-wood tree (Gymnocladus canadensis Lam.) that grew in the Muzljanski Rit area, of the Srpska Crnja municipality in Serbia. According to previous research, it was deduced that Gymnocladus canadensis Lam. belongs to ring-porous species with big vessel lumen in the earlywood zone and thicker cell walls in the latewood. Vessels were more numerous in the latewood zone, and the same was true for heartwood and sapwood. For both layers, sapwood possessed a few more vessels than heartwood, and a statistically significant difference was confirmed by t-test during the early phase. The greatest negative value of correlation coefficient was between the number of vessels and growth-ring width during the early phase for sapwood. The number of vessels decreased in the wider growth rings. The correlation between growth-ring width and the area of vessels had a statistically significant positive value of correlative coefficient, which means that wider growth rings had larger vessel areas in the early phase for sapwood.

AB - This paper analyzes the iron (Fe) content of the vegetation at the beginning of the vegetative cycle for the period 2012/2013. Heavy metal content in the vegetative parts of ten plants (eight types of woody plants and two types of herbs) was analyzed in four locations. Iron (Fe) is a biogenic element present in plants in relatively small quantities. However, its ability to produce chelates, as well as being polyvalent, assorts it into a group of elements which have a significant impact on many physiological and biochemical processes. The analysis of iron content in leaves of woody plants and herbs growing in the natural protected area "Kosmaj" has shown that depending on location the iron concentration, in statistical terms, significantly differs and ranges from A to I in locations 1 and 3, whereas its concentration ranges from A to J in locations 2 and 4.

AB - In the paper, the content of heavy metal (Zn) in plants of Kosmaj area was analyzed. Concentration of Zn was measured at four locations, in vegetative parts - leaves of ten plants (eight of them were woody plants and the other two were herbaceous plants). Results showed that samples of plant material from all locations are not contaminated with heavy metal and, at the same time, the results show lack of Zn at some locations, as well. It is important to emphasize that Zn does not endanger the area of Kosmaj.

AB - Leaf traits were investigated as morphological attributes for quality estimation of one-year-old bareroot seedlings of Fraxinus angustifolia Vahl. Leaf traits (number of simple - NSL and compound leaves - NCL, leaf average - ALA and total area - TLA and leaf area ratio - LAR) show similar relations to morphological attributes, the strongest to shoot growth (height - HT, root collar diameter - DIA and shoot dry weight - SDW). Increases of seedling morphological attributes are strongly related to increases of ALA. Given to strong positive correlations with other morphological attributes, ALA (R = 0.68-0.88) and TLA (R = 0.46-0.92) are suitable for seedlings quality testing. TLA explained a larger proportion of the variation of SDW (R-2 = 0.85) and ALA explained a large proportion of the variation of DIA (R-2 = 0.81). Leaf traits can be considered as valuable morphological attributes of seedling quality, in addition to strong correlation with other morphological attributes.

AB - The taxonomic status of beech from the Balkan Peninsula is not yet clearly defined. There is no agreement among different authors about the morphological characteristics discriminating between the Balkan and European and/or Eastern beech. For most characteristics, the mean values are different but the ranges of variation overlap considerably. Provenance trial of beech established in Serbia, at the locality Debeli Lug, has provided an opportunity for research of inter-provenance variability at the level of leaf morphometric characteristics in juvenile development stage. Research included 10 provenances originating from the Western Balkans (Serbian provenance 36 and 38; Croatian provenance 24 and 25; Bosnian provenance 30 and 32) and from Central Europe (German provenance 47 and 49; Austrian provenance 56 and Hungarian provenance 42), where following morphometric characteristics were analyzed: leaf length (Ll), leaf width (Lw), petiole lenght (Pl), leaf base width on 1 cm (Blw), number of veins-left (Vl), number of veins - right (Vr), distance between 3(rd) and 4(th) vein - left (Dv 3-4). The results of this research show existence of clear differentiation among provenances from the Western Balkan and from Central Europe, from the point of leaf dimensions, number of veins and leaf base width.

abstract = "The taxonomic status of beech from the Balkan Peninsula is not yet clearly defined. The results of this research show existence of clear differentiation among provenances from the Western Balkan and from Central Europe, from the point of leaf dimensions, number of veins and leaf base width.",

AB - Belgrade is one of the greenest capitals in Europe. The protected natural area, "Avala" (i.e. a separate part of unit that is declared as a landscape of outstanding features) is located on the territory of Belgrade and attracts the attention of all profiles of researchers. It should be noted also that the area of Avala was bombed in 1999 and the Avala Tower was destroyed. Researches aiming to determine the pollutant loading of the area are of particular importance. The aim of this research is to determine the content of 16 types of PAHs in three different locations on Avala sites 1, 2 and 3, with sampling of soil at two different depths (0-10 cm and 10-20 cm). One of the most frequent streets in downtown Belgrade (locality 4) was chosen as control site. On the basis of the results, it can be concluded that the soil of Avala is well preserved, which is in line with the declaration that Avala is a protected area.

AB - The research of heavy metals contents (Pb, Mn, Zn, Ni, Fe) in soil in the area of the National Park, Fruska gora", along the highway M21 shows lower values for manganese, zinc and iron than the maximum allowed quantity prescribed by law. For nickel and lead it shows higher values than maximum allowed quantity. The heavy metals contents in leaves of lime tree in 12 analyzed genotypes are far below average values in accordance with ECCE with all genotypes except genotype 7 for lead and genotypes 7 and 8 for iron. The results of analysis of variance components show that out of four components (locality, genotype, locality x genotype and error) only the interaction between locality and genotype does not contribute to variance. The contents of Pb, Mn, Fe and Zn in leaves is primarily influenced by genotype while Ni contents may be considered a consequence of locality. The selection of genotypes which is able to uptake greater quantities of heavy metals than other genotypes may serve as a solid basis for phytoextraction of heavy metals as a technology by which heavy metals, metalloids and radionuclides are extracted from environment through usage of suitable species and plant genotypes able to uptake and accumulate the given pollutants in parts of plant tissue.

AB - Vascular plants can precisely indicate the presence and intensity of different pollutants (heavy metals, chemical substances etc.) in air and soil in natural ecosystems as well as in the urban environments. The accumulation of heavy metals in plants in higher concentrations indicates the relative increase and the pollution spread all over the habitat. For comparative analyses of heavy metal contents (Pb, Ni, Zn, Fe and Mn) in leaves, we have chosen four plant species, two woody: Silver lime (Tillia tomentosa Mnch.) and European Black Pine (Pinus nigra Am.) and two herbs: Plantain (Plantago media L.) and Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale Web.). The research was performed on three locations away from the central part of the city of Belgrade and one location in the city centre on soil loaded with heavy metals. The obtained results indicate that herbs are capable of accumulation of higher quantities of Pb, Ni, Zn and Fe in their leaves than woody plants growing in the same habitat. Cluster analysis dendogram clearly shows grouping of woody plants and herbs in two homogenous groups indicating their differences and specific group characteristics concerning the uptake and deposition of heavy metals by plants.

Vascular plants are often used for biomonitoring of heavy metals. The analyses are most often performed on plant leaves. The results of this research clearly indicate that pollution with lead on the locations of Avala (locations 1, 2 and 3), although being of an anthropogenic origin, do not result only from traffic, while on location 4 due to the frequency of traffic, the greatest agent of lead pollution is traffic. AB - Fruska gora is a mountain situated in the northern part of the Republic of Serbia in the province of Vojvodina. The purpose of this study was to determine the degree to which soil and plants are burdened with certain heavy metals (Pb, Ni, Zn, Fe, Mn, and others usually present in polluted atmosphere), then the accumulation of heavy metals in the National Park "Fruska gora" was detected and the interdependence of pollution among all three media of the environment determined. This paper analyzes the heavy metal contents within a 2-years period in air, soil and plants at the beginning of the vegetation period. The presence of Pb, Ni, Zn, Fe and Mn in the samples was analyzed using flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Measurements of heavy metal contents were performed at 7 locations in soil and vegetative parts of 17 plant types (woody plants, herbs and lianas), and analysis of the air was performed at 2 locations (through placement of sedimentators) within a 3-months period during winter. One of the major findings is that the dominant emission of pollutants at the analyzed locations is anthropogenic and originates from traffic.
