AB - Quercus petraea (Matt.) Liebl., Q. pubescens Willd., and Q. frainetto Ten. grow naturally in sympatry in the Landscape of Outstanding Features "Kosmaj" (Mt. Kosmaj) in Serbia, in the Western Balkans. The levels of genetic diversity and genetic structure in populations of these species (160 trees in total) was assessed by means of 14 nuclear microsatellites. The number of alleles detected in overall sample was 314, with the locus QrZAG90 being the most informative one in all three species (31, 35 and 36 alleles in Q. frainetto, Q. pubescens and Q. petraea, respectively). The levels of genetic diversity of all three species were relatively high (HE = 0.824, 0.834, and 0.794 in Q. petraea, Q. pubescens and Q. frainetto, respectively). Low but statistically significant inbreeding was detected in all three species (F = 0.100, 0.131 and 0.065 in Q. petraea, Q. pubescens and Q. frainetto, respectively), which, however, most likely reflects population substructure, which was observed in the STRUCTURE analysis. The optimal number of genetic groups revealed by Bayesian clustering analysis did not coincide with the number of analyzed species as it amounted to four (one gene pool was observed in each of the two species, Q. petraea and Q. pubescens, while two gene pools were observed in Q. pubescens). Furthermore, a higher level of hierarchical genetic structure, with six gene pools was found, with Q. frainetto being the only oak species in which population substructure was not observed. Genetic differentiation of three sympatric oak species was relatively low but statistically significant, with the highest FST value found among Q. petraea and Q. frainetto (FST = 0.047, P = 0.001), and the lowest between Q. petraea and Q. pubescens (FST = 0.032, P = 0.001). Our results reveal rather high levels of genetic diversity in all three studied oak species, which retained their genetic integrity despite sympatric distribution, indicating low levels of interspecific hybridization, and pronounced genetic structure of Q. pubescens and Q. petraea.

AB - Forests have a key role in climate change. One of the most important forest carbon stocks is forest soil. Globally it is estimated that forest soil carbon stock may vary from equal to twice that of forest vegetation. Because of that it is important to have estimates of soil carbon and soil biodiversity which plays a key role in soil carbon sequestration. This can be done by either through repeated measurements or by application of dynamic models. In this chapter up to date program solutions which can be used to model carbon sequestration under different forest management practices are reviewed. The application of modeling tools with the aim of sequestered carbon estimation and exploring its linkages to ecosystem variability are presented through literature review and a case study from Serbia. Moreover, possibilities of modeling carbon sequestration in perennial grass species are elaborated, emphasizing simplified ecosystem of perennial crop Miscanthus x giganteus, an attractive agro-energy crop suitable for short rotation plantation establishment, assumed as neutral for CO2, that is retained by underground organs.

AB - Forest genetic resources, which represent genetic diversity contained in the
thousands of forest tree species, take a significant place in total
biodiversity of Serbia. The forest ecosystems of Serbia include about 250
indigenous tree species which, according to geographical-floral elements,
belong to the Middle-European, Pontic and Mediterranean element. Within the
available gene pool, special attention should be addressed to wild fruit tree
species and those species which are relict, endemic, rare and endangered
according to the IUCN categorization. The regulatory basis for conservation
and directed utilization of forest genetic resources in Serbia can be found
in the strategic and legal acts in the field of environmental protection,
nature conservation and forestry. Previous activities in the conservation of
forest genetic resources are insufficient, whereby the level of their
endangerment is continuously increasing as a result of deforestation and
climate change. This situation requires a clear definition of a national
strategy of conservation and directed utilization of forest genetic resources
in Serbia, as a basis for planning activities in this area based on best
   practices.

AB - Seed material for the study of hackberry characters and variation in the juvenile stage of development was collected in the micropopulations on the territory of the town Sombor. The study results refer to different stages of early ontogeny, which are presented at 7 levels. The observed variation at the levels of seeds, seedlings, 1-year-old and 2-year-old plants, as well as the high i.e. low values of the analysed morphometric characters of individual half-sib lines, are a good base for the study and the adequate utilisation of the species genetic potential, in harmony with the basic principles of breeding and the enhancement of reproductive material quality.
