AB - Aim The strength of species interactions is traditionally expected to increase toward the Equator. However, recent studies have reported opposite or inconsistent latitudinal trends in the bottom-up (plant quality) and top-down (natural enemies) forces driving herbivory. In addition, these forces have rarely been studied together thus limiting previous attempts to understand the effect of large-scale climatic gradients on herbivory. Location Europe. Time period 2018-2019. Major taxa studied Quercus robur. Methods We simultaneously tested for latitudinal variation in plant-herbivore-natural enemy interactions. We further investigated the underlying climatic factors associated with variation in herbivory, leaf chemistry and attack rates in Quercus robur across its complete latitudinal range in Europe. We quantified insect leaf damage and the incidence of specialist herbivores as well as leaf chemistry and bird attack rates on dummy caterpillars on 261 oak trees. Results Climatic factors rather than latitude per se were the best predictors of the large-scale (geographical) variation in the incidence of gall-inducers and leaf-miners as well as in leaf nutritional content. However, leaf damage, plant chemical defences (leaf phenolics) and bird attack rates were not influenced by climatic factors or latitude. The incidence of leaf-miners increased with increasing concentrations of hydrolysable tannins, whereas the incidence of gall-inducers increased with increasing leaf soluble sugar concentration and decreased with increasing leaf C : N ratios and lignins. However, leaf traits and bird attack rates did not vary with leaf damage. Main conclusions These findings help to refine our understanding of the bottom-up and top-down mechanisms driving geographical variation in plant-herbivore interactions, and indicate the need for further examination of the drivers of herbivory on trees.

AB - Interactions between plants, insects and pathogens are complex and not sufficiently understood in the context of climate change. In this study, the impact of a root pathogen on a leaf-eating insect hosted by a tree species at elevated CO2 concentration is reported for the first time. The combined and isolated effects of CO2 and infection by the root pathogen Phytophthora plurivora on English oak (Quercus robur) seedlings were used to assess growth rates of plants and of gypsy moth (Lymantria dispar) larvae. For this purpose, two Q. robur provenances (Belgrade and Sombor) were used. At ambient CO2 concentration, the relative growth rates of larvae consuming leaves of plants infected by P. plurivora was higher than those consuming non-infected plants. However, at elevated CO2 concentration (1000 ppm) higher relative growth rates were detected in the larvae consuming the leaves of non-infected plants. At ambient CO2 concentration, lower growth rates were recorded in L. dispar larvae hosted in Q. robur from Belgrade in comparison to larvae hosted in Q. robur from Sombor. However, at elevated CO2 concentration, similar growth rates irrespective of the provenance were observed. Defoliation by the gypsy moth did not influence the growth of plants while P. plurivora infection significantly reduced tree height in seedlings from Belgrade. The results confirm that a rise of CO2 concentration in the atmosphere modifies the existing interactions between P. plurivora, Q. robur, and L. dispar. Moreover, the influence of the tree provenances on both herbivore and plant performance at elevated CO2 concentrations suggests a potential for increasing forest resilience through breeding.

AB - Micropropagation (shoot tip and nodal cuttings culture) was used for the rapid propagation of the non-invasive, decorative, native plants of maiden pink (Dianthus deltoides L.) in order to preserve their genetic diversity. In vitro culture was successfully established on Murashige and Skoog medium (MS) using seeds as the initial material. In the shoot multiplication phase, the explants were cultured on MS medium supplemented with different concentrations of 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) and naphthaleneacetic acid (NAA). The highest multiplication rate was achieved on a medium containing 0.1 mgL(-1) of BAP and 0.1 mgL(-1) of NAA. The rooting was successful on a hormone-free medium (100%), and the highest percentage of microplant acclimatization (97%) was recorded in a 4: 1 mixture of peat and sand.

AB - Paulownia elongata is an ornamental, fast-growing species and resistant to urban conditions. It was successfully adapted to the growing conditions in Serbia. Twelve-year-old elite tree, originating from a plantation in Bela Crkva was used as stock plant for the experiments. In vitro culture was successfully established using disinfection of nodal segments of annual shoots with 0.1% HgCl2 for 10 min. The most favorable shoot multiplication response (6.7 shoots per explant) was recorded on MS medium supplemented with 6 mg l(-1) BA and 0.5 mg l(-1) IBA, and rooting was successful (95%) on MS medium with 0.8 mg l(-1) of IBA and the same amount of NAA.

AB - Urban areas are among the most important centres of invasive plant species distribution due to their richness in alien species. Because of that, a detailed floristic analysis of perennial flowerbeds was conducted in the central parks of Belgrade. A total of 53 perennial species were found, of which 55% were the alien species planted on 75% of the research area. Among them, two species (Aster novi belgii and Solidago canadensis) are invasive and six species are potentially invasive in Serbia. These are planted on 5% and 20% of the flowerbeds, respectively. We can conclude that both the experts and institutions should be informed about the invasive species and potential damages. In the meantime, planting of native decorative species should be encouraged, since they will not pose a threat to natural habitats. Also, detailed research should be conducted in order to eradicate invasive and potentially invasive species from the surfaces around the research area.

Also, detailed research should be conducted in order to eradicate invasive and potentially invasive species from the surfaces around the research area.",

AB - The possibility of developing roots and shoots on Dianthus deltoides nodal and apical cuttings on rooting media was investigated in vitro conditions. The explants developed roots and shoots successfully, and the best results were achieved on MS medium without plant hormones. Number of roots per shoot, length of roots and ramification of roots were not significantly dependent on the medium (NAA-naphthaleneacetic acid concentration), or on the type of explant used (nodal or apical cuttings). The acclimatization rate of microplants was influenced by root numbers and ramification. The transfer to soil was successful, maximum survival rates (96%) were achieved on peat - sand (4:1) mixture.

AB - The possibility of improving D. deltoides micropropagation was studied in the aim of reducing the number of vitrified and necrotic shoots. Micropropagation was performed on the medium with MS mineral solution, supplemented with 3% sucrose, 0.8% agar, 50 mg·L-1 mio-inositol, 0.025 mg·L-1 thiamin, 0.125 mg·L-1 nicotinic acid and 0.5 mg·L-1 glycine. The shoot multiplication was induced on 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP) and α-naphthalene acetic acid (NAA). Vitrification was successfully reduced, and the best results were achieved on the medium with 1 mg·L-1 BAP and 0.1 mg·L-1 NAA. Rooting was successful on the medium without hormones, and the acclimatisation percentage accounted for 92%.
