AB - The aim of this paper is to contribute to the classification of structural timber in the ex-YU region into strength-class system through the application of experimentally obtained archive data in order to provide a realistic framework for most commonly used II grade (according to JUS) structural coniferous timber. The analysis of archive data was carried out on a sample of 150 specimens of structural size and based on the set of statistical requirements prescribed by EN standards, taking into account the change in disposition of loading in laboratory testing in the past and now. Statistical procedures prescribed by EN standards are given through calculation steps together with necessary adjustment factors that cover the size and number of specimens. The presented procedures given for structural-size specimens are also applicable to small clear specimens, so that a more comprehensive research and additional new examinations could be conducted with the available archive data simultaneously with the harmonization of the visual classification rules applied in the ex-YU region. The paper emphasises the direct dependence of the consistent application of the visual grading rules required by the relevant EN standard on strength-class system.

AB - Classification of timber for various commercial purposes is essential for its proper application in order to ensure the reliability and economic use. Visual grading of structural timber is commonly used in a number of EU countries, with different grading national standards optimized for locally available wood. Countries in the ex-YU region are traditional partners in wood trade and had the same standards for visual grading, but in most of the regions these standards are not completely compliant with EN requirements. Consequently, that leads to the fact that the most of regionally available structural timber is not assigned into strength classes, which is the starting point for the limit-state concept in design of timber structures. The aim of this paper is to emphasize the lack of strength classification of structural timber in the ex-YU region, which is a prerequisite for the design of timber structures made by civil engineers. Based on an overview of visual classification types with regional experience in grading, relevant EN standards, and differences in design concepts with possible consequences of grading approach, it can be concluded that "quality" grades and "strength" classes are not easily comparable.

AB - The prediction of physical (wood density, mass loss) and mechanical (bending properties, compressive strength parallel to grain, and Brinell hardness) properties of heat-treated sessile oak (Quercus petraea L.) by FT-NIR spectroscopy, colour change, and partial least squares regression (PLS) was studied. Samples of oak sapwood and heartwood were treated for 4 h at temperatures at 170, 190, and 210 degrees C. FT-NIR spectra (100 scans and 4 cm(-1)) and colour parameters (CIE L*a*b* system) were collected on the radial surface before and after heat treatment. The applied heat treatment changed wood properties, darkened the colour and reduced the colour difference between heartwood and sapwood. According to the residual prediction deviation (RPD), most models obtained could be used for preliminary wood quality screening (1.5 lt RPD lt 2.0) and the properties of heartwood were better predicted than those of sapwood. Mass loss prediction by colour change can be used for quality control while for the other properties FT-NIR provided a more clear picture of the heat-treated oak wood and can serve as a quality indicator.

AB - The paper presents the results of testing the bending stress of Serbian spruce wood from natural stands. In testing the samples, in addition to the modulus of rupture, the bending stress at the proportionality limit, the ratio between the stress at the proportionality limit and the modulus of rupture as well as the modulus of elasticity of wood were determined. The study included nine trees from natural stands, and a total of 261 samples were tested. Regression analysis determined the dependences of these mechanical properties on the annual ring width, the proportion of late wood and wood density, as well as the dependence of the modulus of elasticity on the modulus of rupture.

come from plantations and nine trees from natural stands of Serbian spruce,
and a total of 3098 samples were tested. The results show a change in
transversal anisotropy at the height of the tree, as well as its change in
radius. The dependence of this property on the growth rings width, the
participation of late wood and the density of wood was determined by

AB - The subject of this paper is the analysis of the quality of natural and
conventional drying of subfossil oak wood. In addition to the drying
quality, the colour of this material, as well as the effect of the drying
process on colour change have been tested. The subfossil oak logs that were
used in this experiment originate from the Morava River in Central Serbia.
After sawing, timber was air-dried to about 20% moisture content (MC)
followed by kiln-drying to 9.5% MC. By examining the quality of air-drying
of the subfossil oak wood, a high presence of cracks was found, as well as
the inaccuracy of humidity measurement using electric moisture meters. The
stack for kiln-drying consisted of 24 boards, of which 4 were used for the
monitoring of MC and MC distribution across the thickness of plank during
drying. Drying quality was evaluated after the kiln-drying process. Although
mild drying conditions during kiln-drying were applied, the gap as a measure
of case-hardening had a value greater than usual for oak of same thickness.
It was found that the drying process has no significant effect on the change
in the colour of subfossil wood. The colour of the subfossil oak wood was
significantly darker than the usual oak wood, and the colour difference
between the central and the outer parts of the trunk of the subfossil oak
   was determined.

AB - This paper presents the results of testing the compression of Serbian spruce wood from plantations and natural stands. Compression perpendicular to grain in radial and tangential direction was tested. A dilatation of 1% was taken for a conditional boundary dilatation, and the appropriate strength for the conditional limit strength was taken. Six trees from plantations and nine trees from natural stands were analyzed. In total, 309 samples were tested. The regression analysis examined the dependence of these mechanical properties on the width of the annual rings, the percentage of late wood and wood density.

AB - The goal of this word was to examine the parameters of color of beech wood before and after thermal treatment, and to determine if there is a difference in color between sapwood and red heartwood before and after application of high temperature. Samples were treated at temperatures of 170°C, 190°C and 210°C, respectively, during 4 hours. Color coordinates (CIEL*a*b*system) were measured before and after treatment by using the following parameters: ΔL, Δa, Δb and ΔE - color change. Color was assessed at four spots on the radial and cross-section surfaces of wood and their mean values were taken for further calculations. Acquired results show that the applied heat treatment of sapwood did not significantly influence the change of color difference between cross-section and radial surfaces. The difference between cross-section and radial surfaces, in nontreated red heartwood was smaller than that measured in sapwood. The color difference of nontreated sapwood and red heartwood was more pronounced on the radial than on the cross-section surface. Application of high temperature caused a significant decrease of this difference. Temperature of 210°C caused the smallest color difference between these two parts of wood which was in this research determined on the radial surface. It was concluded that the applied thermal treatment almost equalized the colors of sapwood and red heartwood, especially on the radial surface, and from this aspect it can be concluded that these two parts of beech wood were completely equalized. It should also be noted that in the case of equalized properties, sapwood and red heartwood can be equally applied in a final product made of thermally treated beech wood.

AB - The research examines the possibility of predicting the mechanical [modulus of rupture (MOR) and modulus of elasticity (MOE)] and physical (oven-dry and air-dry densities) properties of thermally modified beech wood (Fagus moesica C.) with red heartwood by using FT-NIR spectroscopy and partial least squares regression. Samples of sapwood and red heartwood were treated for 4 h at temperatures of 170, 190, and 210 A degrees C. FT-NIR spectra (100 scans and 4 cm(-1)) were collected on the radial surface at eight points before and after the thermal modification. Oven-dry and air-dry densities as well as MOR and MOE determined by three-point bending tests were evaluated. Generally, according to the residual prediction deviation (RPD), the majority of the models obtained can be used for preliminary screening (1.5 lt RPD lt 2.5). The results of the spectra taken from sapwood were, in most models, better than the spectra of the red heartwood. Statistically, the values of density were mostly better than the values shown in assessment of bending properties. Results show that it is possible to accurately predict the quality of wood after being subjected to high temperatures, based on the spectra collected before the thermal modification. This fact could contribute to a more rational use of wood (especially from red heartwood) in the process of thermal modification.

AB - Changes in color (CIE L*a*b*) and properties (density, mass loss, density loss, and bending properties) of heat-treated beechwood were researched, as well as the possibilities of predicting these properties based on color. Considering the different market values of sapwood and red heartwood, the aim of this study was to establish whether these parts of beechwood differ after a heat treatment. Samples were exposed to temperatures of 170 degrees C, 190 degrees C, and 210 degrees C, respectively, for 4 hours. In order to predict the properties, a linear regression with color change (Delta E) and Delta L predictors was used, as well as the partial least squares (PLS) regression with 12 color variables. It has been shown that heat treatment reduces the properties of sapwood and red heartwood in the same manner, and equalizes the colors. The PLS-R showed the best results of prediction and presented the very high coefficients of determination for the mass loss, density loss, and modulus of rupture (MOR) in both sapwood and red heartwood. The equalized colors of heat- treated red heartwood and sapwood can significantly increase the use of products made out of red heartwood. Color can be an important indicator of the quality of such beechwood.

AB - This paper presents the study results of the basic physical and strength properties of Hungarian oak (Quercus conferta Kit.) wood from the Kakovo Monastery forests of Hilandar Monastery in Greece. Wood properties were analyzed in detail, as an indispensable proof of wood quality and its use for joinery, interiors and wooden floors. The basic physical properties of wood (moisture content at the time of tree felling, density and volume porosity) and the basic strength properties (compressive strength, bending strength and module of elasticity) were researched. The results are presented in Tables and in Diagrams with statistical parameters and compared to the literature data. The correlation of the study properties of wood was also analyzed.

Ispitana je i korelaciona zavisnost između istraživanih svojstava drveta., This paper presents the study results of the basic physical and strength properties of Hungarian oak (Quercus conferta Kit.) wood from the Kakovo Monastery forests of Hilandar Monastery in Greece. The correlation of the study properties of wood was also analyzed.",

AB - The impact of the four Stereales fungi on the anatomical elements of sessile and pedunculate oak has been investigated as follows: Stereum hirsutum, Chondrostereum purpureum and Stereum rugosum known as oak sapwood white rot causers, as well as Xylobolus frustulatus as oak heartwood white - pocket rot (Partridge wood) causer. Samples of sessile- and pedunculate oak sapwood as well as heartwood were exposed to developed dicariotic mycelia of the tested fungi under controlled conditions for 8 weeks. After that period, micro preparations were made for the analysis using light microscope providing normal-, UV-, blue fluorescence- and polarising light, as well as using SEM (Scanning electron microscope). All the tested fungi caused greater damages to the anatomical elements of sessile oak in comparison with pedunculate one. In both cases, the sapwood zone was more damaged than heartwood one. The notified damages of the heartwood, except those for the fungus Xylobolus frustulatus have not been obtained so far. The most affected elements of the both oak species were the fibres of tension wood (G-layers) and parenchyma cells, while tracheas and normal wood fibres, especially in the heartwood zone, were far more resistant to the hyphens of Stereales fungi. In all the tested combinations where damages were notified, fungi had previously consumed the content of the parenchyma cells and have than destroyed the cell-walls of the tension wood fibres, parenchyma cells, and tracheal walls near by pit zones. However, the normal wood fibres, especially in the heartwood zone, were the least damaged or undamaged. During the wall thinning, the damaging advanced from cell lumen to middle lamella. Hyphens were, however, not noted in the intercellular spaces, excepting the final stages of wood cells damaging. Considering the irregular and disordered distribution and appearance of damaged zones inside the wood, the conclusions relating to endangered species or wood zones, need not be considered in the quantitative, but exclusively in qualitative sense.

AB - The effect of moisture and temperature on beechwood static MOE, MOR and stress at proportional limit in bending was tested. The experiment was performed at wood moisture contents of 0, 10, 17 and 24 %. and maximum MC, and at temperatures of 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100 degrees C, in radial and tangential directions. The highest MOE, (12880 MPa) was measured for oven-dry wood in radial direction. MOE decreased with the increase in wood moisture and temperature by about 4 times. It was proved that MOE was in functional linear correlation with wood hygroscopic moisture and the temperature of moist wood. MOE did not change with moisture above the hygroscopicity limit or with temperature when the wood was dry. The increase of moisture within the hygroscopic range by 1 % caused the decrease in MOE by 1.3 to 3.3 %, depending on temperature and anatomic direction, while the temperature increase by 1 degrees C caused the decrease of MOE by 0.2 to 0.6 %, depending on wood moisture. Oven-dry beechwood MOR is 150 to 160 MPa. MOR decreased with the increase of hygroscopic moisture by the exponential law, while the effect of temperature was linear. The increase of moisture in the hygroscopic range by 1 % caused the decrease of MOR by 2.1 to 7.1 %, and the increase of temperature by 1 degrees C caused its decrease by 0.4 to 0.6 %, for both anatomic directions. The stress at proportional limit ranged between 42 and 70 % of the value of MOR, and the effect of moisture and temperature on its change was generally synchronic with their effect on MOR.

AB - The basic mechanical properties of beech wood in coppice forest, locality Bor-Boljevac, Management unit "Crni Vrh-Kupinovo" were studied: Bending strength, modulus of elasticity in bending and shock resistance. Eight trees were taken from two series covered by the scientific-production experiment in this management unit. The statistically processed results were presented for each tree. There is a very strong correlation of the general linear form y=ax+b between the study properties, except between density and shock resistance. Static bending strength decreases mildly with tree height. The analysis shows that the average values of the study properties of beech wood at this locality are approximately the same as the values at other localities in the former SFRY. The only deviation is shock resistance.

Jedino odstupanje ima dinamička čvrstoća na savijanje., The basic mechanical properties of beech wood in coppice forest, locality Bor-Boljevac, Management unit "Crni Vrh-Kupinovo" were studied: Bending strength, modulus of elasticity in bending and shock resistance. The only deviation is shock resistance.",
