AB - The choice of optimal pressing regime for certain types of substrate is of great importance in production of veneered panels. In this paper, the impact of pressing regime on the bonding strength of beech and oak veneers, glued with urea-formaldehyde (UF) adhesive, on medium-density fiberboard (MDF), and moisture-resistant MDF (MR MDF) substrates was examined. The analyses showed a generally higher bond strength with oak veneer compared to beech veneer, which was also the case with regular MDF compared to moisture-resistant MDF. Multivariate analysis of variance (ANOVA) showed that with beech veneer, all of the used regimes produced better results on regular MDF compared to moisture resistant MDF. In contrast, with oak veneer, the influence of pressing regime had a more noteworthy impact than the type of substrate used. These results indicated that the use of MR MDF as substrate in combination with UF adhesive was inadequate.

AB - Possibilities for use of thermally modified poplar veneer were evaluated for the production of plywood boards in industrial conditions. Formats of poplar veneer were treated at temperatures of 190 degrees C, 200 degrees C, 210 degrees C, and 215 degrees C for 1 h. By combining the treated and non-treated formats of veneer, thirteen different types of board were made. Analyses showed that the examined physical and mechanical properties were influenced by both the type of construction and the applied thermal treatment. Boards composed only of thermally modified veneer achieved the best results regarding moisture absorption and dimensional stability, and boards composed of the combined veneers had better mechanical properties. Treatments at 200 degrees C and 210 degrees C proved to be optimal, while the treatment at 215 degrees C was too harsh and should not be used for the thermal modification of poplar veneer.

AB - The subject of this paper was a research of physical and mechanical properties of LVL composed of peeled poplar veneers in core layers and only outer layers of beech peeled veneers, so as the examination of window frame glue joint strength produced of this material. LVL boards have been hot pressed in industrial conditions, using appropriate phenol formaldehyde (PP) adhesive. Samples for corner window frame glue joint strength testing were glued with PVAc D4 class adhesive. Statistical analysis showed that there were significant differences both in moisture content and density of LVL boards regarding their thickness, while in the case of hardness this difference did not exist. Examinations of LVL glue line shear strength showed that both phenol formaldehyde (PP) and PVAc D4 class adhesives fulfilled standard requirements. The results of corner window frame double tenon glue joint strength produced from combined poplar-beech veneer LVL indicated that such material could be used to produce window frame corner joint, strong enough to withstand the additional load, without an increase of the cross section.

AB - The objective of the doctoral dissertation was to establish whether the production of plywood made by combining thermally modified and unmodified poplar veneer, could yield products that would be dimensionally more stable compared to ordinary poplar plywood, with minimum decreasing of mechanical properties. Formats of poplar veneers were thermally modified at temperatures of 190 °C, 200 °C, 210 °C and 215 °C during 1 h in the presence of steam as protection agens. The data indicated that there was significant difference in color between poplar veneers made from sapwood and wet heartwood, before thermal modification. After thermal treatments, the best results in reducing of color difference between veneers gained treatment at 210 °C, while thermal treatments at 190 and 210 °C didn´t show satisfactory effect. The thermally treated and control (untreated) veneer formats were used to make 13 different types of five-layer plywood's (6 boards of each type). Plywood pressing was done in a dry-hot pressing process on industrial press, and MUF (melamine-urea-formaldehyde) glue was applied as adhesive. Analyses showed that the equilibrium moisture content and dimensional stability of plywoods were highly influenced by both thermal treatments and plywood constructions. Change of moisture content and dimensions of plywoods were lower with the increase of schedule temperature, and with the increase of percentage of thermally modified veneer in plywood construction. There was established that control plywood had significantly higher hardness then all other produced plywood types. The statistically significant difference in hardness between plywood made of thermally treated veneers at different temperatures existed, but only treatment at 190 °C was significantly different compared by treatments at 210 °C and 215 °C. Analysis of the results indicated that thermal treatments had a lower influence on the decrease of modulus of elasticity than on the decrease of bending strength. Analysis of the results of shear strength in the adhesive layers, showed that every plywood type had satisfactory properties for plywood application in indoor use. Increase of intensity of pre-treatments (tests for plywood application in conditions of high humidity and in outdoor use), caused a significant decrease in shear strength in the adhesive layers. This decrease of shear strength was a consequence of weakening of adhesive bond caused by pre-treatments. It was concluded that treatments at 200 °C and 210 °C gained optimal results, while treatment at 215 °C proved to be too intensive, and should not be used for thermal modification of poplar veneer.

AB - This paper presents the results of poplar (Populus x euramericana) veneer colour change caused by one-hour long thermal treatments at temperatures of 190, 200, 210 and 215 C. There were three veneer zones included in this experiment: Veneer from sapwood, veneer from heartwood and veneer from intermediate zone - mixed. The measurement results by CIELAB colour system confirmed that there were significant colour differences among the three groups of veneer before thermal treatments. Of all thermal treatments, only the treatment at 210 degrees C contributed to a significant decrease in difference of colour among of all observed veneers. Based on more intensive color change in veneer formats from sapwood, it could be assumed that there were differences in chemical composition between the peripheral and core zones of poplar wood.

AB - Some properties of plywood panels made from untreated and thermally modified (90 min. at 200 degrees C) poplar veneers and their combinations have been analyzed. The change in equilibrium moisture content and the change in dimensions of the samples conditioned above water in closed containers were examined. The analysis using F-test (ANOVA) at the significance level of 95% confirmed that, regarding moisture content, all combinations of plywood panels differed significantly from the control panels. However, the analysis of thickness swelling showed that there was no significant difference among the plywood panels of similar construction. The highest values of anti-swelling efficiency were shown by plywood panels made from thermally modified veneers.

AB - The influence of oscillating climate conditions during the conventional drying of beech timber on drying time and drying quality has been analyzed. Three conventional drying cycles were carried out as well as nine cycles, in which the oscillations of equilibrium moisture content (EMC), temperature, and their combination were applied. The combinations of two amplitudes (10% or 20%) and two frequencies (3 or 6 h) were used in different test runs. Higher drying quality regarding casehardening was achieved both in runs with oscillations of EMC (gap values 2.2-2.4 mm) and in runs with temperature oscillations (gap values 2.3-2.4 mm) compared with conventional runs (gap values 2.5-2.9 mm). The oscillations of both temperature and EMC did not improve any of the observed parameters.

AB - The density, shrinkage and swelling of Paulownia elongata and P. fortuneii wood were researched. The study material was provided by Boda Vukovojac, B. Sc., who established the Paulownia plantation and sample plots on the territory of the Municipality Bela Crkva. The study results show the differences between the analyzed properties of these two species. The study results were also compared with the results of the similar species of wood. The data shows that the study wood can be used in wood products that are not subject to great loads during exploitation. Further study should investigate the liability of these wood species to form tension wood and deformations in the conditions of variable hygroscopic moisture.
