AB - The influence of applying the oscillations of air parameters during conventional drying of beech timber on energy consumption is discussed in the paper. A special drying software was created to enable the input of frequency (in hours) and amplitude (in percents) of oscillations. Altogether 12 drying runs were carried out: three conventional ones and nine by using the same schedule but with oscillations of equilibrium moisture content (EMC), temperature and the combination of these two. The combinations of two amplitudes (10 % or 20 %) and two frequencies (3 or 6 hours) were applied in different test runs. The results indicated that all test runs had energy consumptions proportional to drying time, with an important influence of the outside temperature. In runs with oscillations, often climate changes influenced to some extent the total energy consumption, especially in runs with short phases (3 hours) and high amplitudes (20 %). Despite frequent climate changes, it can be expected that the usage of oscillations would lead to the same or even lower energy consumption than in conventional beech timber drying, especially when shorter drying time is reached.

AB - The influence of oscillating climate conditions during the conventional drying of beech timber on drying time and drying quality has been analyzed. Three conventional drying cycles were carried out as well as nine cycles, in which the oscillations of equilibrium moisture content (EMC), temperature, and their combination were applied. The combinations of two amplitudes (10% or 20%) and two frequencies (3 or 6 h) were used in different test runs. Higher drying quality regarding casehardening was achieved both in runs with oscillations of EMC (gap values 2.2-2.4 mm) and in runs with temperature oscillations (gap values 2.3-2.4 mm) compared with conventional runs (gap values 2.5-2.9 mm). The oscillations of both temperature and EMC did not improve any of the observed parameters.

AB - This paper presents the results of a research of velocity of air circulation in the conventional kiln drying of sawn timber and its influence on the uniformity of final moisture content. The data showed that the air velocity (between 0.8 - 1.2 m·s -1) is significantly lower than the one that is optimal for timber drying of coniferous species (3 - 4 m·s-1). This results in a reduction in the capacity of installations for drying, increased energy (thermal and electrical) consumption and thereby increase in the cost of drying. The correlation between the speed of air circulation and the final MC of timber due to prolonged drying was not established. Recommendations that should eliminate the identified deficiencies are also given.

AB - The research results from an analysis of the influence of conditioning time on case-hardening reduction are presented. The levels of case-hardening and moisture content differences across the thickness on beech and oak lumber were measured before, during, and after conditioning. A relationship between gap, as the measure of case-hardening in wood (ENV 14464), and conditioning time was found; a highly linear relationship also exists between gap and moisture content differences across the lumber thickness. Time analysis showed that much shorter conditioning times were adequate to reach acceptable drying quality than the times currently used. It is shown that the conditioning regimes that use equilibrium moisture content lower than the final moisture content are inadequate to obtain a dried product quality that meets modern European standards.
