AB - U radu su prikazani rezultati istraživanja sprovedenih u okviru evropskog provenijeničnog testa bukve, u Nastavnoj bazi Šumarskog fakulteta u Debelom Lugu.
AB - The paper presents the results of the research conducted within the European provenance beech trial, in the Teaching Base of the Faculty of Forestry - Debeli Lug. To assess the inter-provenance genetic variability of beech, using morphological markers, and comparative analysis of the results obtained in two successive years, 10 trees per each selected provenance were sampled. Thirty leaves were collected from each tree (total of 300 leaves per provenance per year). The inter-provenance differences of all morphological leaf characteristics were statistically significant and can be assumed to be the result of the genetic constitution of the provenances themselves. Based on the comparative analysis of the morphological characteristics of beech leaves from 13 different provenances in two research years, it was found that the mean values of most analyzed morphological characteristics were higher in 2017, compared to the results from 2016. Such results could be explained by the different climatic conditions that prevailed in the provenance trial in research years.

AB - European beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) is a common forest tree species in Europe, distributed across environmentally and climatically diverse regions, resulting in wide natural diversity. Considering its wide distribution and the fact that it is drought-susceptible species, beech received a lot of attention recently, in the light of global warming. Consequently, the provenance trial will provide valuable information about genetic variation patterns of the species, the level of local adaptation to changes in environmental conditions as well as information about the amount of adaptive traits plasticity of the studied species within two research periods. The plastic response of provenance morphological traits depends on differences in climatic conditions of the test site and seed origin, showing changes only if the shift happens towards warmer/drier climate, where higher plasticity were showed in older plants within drier conditions. The presented result also show the existence of considerable genetic variation among European beech provenances, even between provenances that originated from the same geographical region, where genetic differentiation among studied provenances showed an ecotypic pattern. The results show that phenotypic differentiation among populations is not always obvious. The existence of significant genetic variation within and among studied provenances could be crucial to beech adaptations processes in terms of changing climate conditions.

AB - European white elm (Ulmus laevis Pall.) and black poplar (Populus nigra L.) are species which occur in riparian forests and present the most significant types of forest trees in the alluvial habitats. Both species are characterized by their broad range and some type of vulnerability. Primarily due to the changes in their natural habitats caused disappearance of this species across Europe, also as Dutch elm disease at European white elm and hybridization of black poplar with poplar clones. Conservation is recognized as necessary and there is more activity in Europe in the aim. We give the review of activity on the conservation both species in Serbia, and especially present population of European white elm and black poplar at Veliko ratno ostrvo Island as very good candidates for in situ conservation.

AB - The aim of this research is to assess F. angustifolia test tree variability based on the morphometric traits and shape of samara from the locality Karapandža. Twenty adult trees were randomly selected. From each individual 100 fully developed samaras were analyzed. The following traits were analyzed: the length and width of samara, the length of seed, ratio between the length of seed and samara, the weight of 100 seeds by individual, samara shape and samara top shape. The obtained results indicated a considerable variability within the studied individuals at the level of samara morphometric traits. Considering that all sampled individuals were from the same populations we could suppose that this variability was not induced by different environmental factors (climate or soil), then with the existence of specific genotypes. Classification based on samara size says that our individuals could belong to large size samaras, i.e. the type known as f. macrocarpa. However, since there is no uniformity of samara shapes within the majority of studied individuals we cannot classify them in accordance with samara shape classification.

AB - Populus nigra as a keystone riparian pioneer tree species is one of the rarest and most endangered species in Europe due to the loss of its natural habitats. Genetic diversity existence is a key factor in survival of one species, and stomata as genetically controlled trait could be used for differentiation studies. With the aim of proving stomatal phenotypic variation of the four native populations of Populus nigra located on the banks of three biggest river valleys (Dunabe, Tisa and Sava) in the region of Vojvodina in northern Serbia, we examined various leaf stomatal traits (stomatal length and width, pore length and width, stomatal density, shape coefficient and stomatal and pore area). We tested the differences of stomatal traits among populations, interindividual variability - differences among trees, the intraindividual variability, the differences between sun-exposed and shaded leaves, among leaves nested in exposition and the differences in adaxial and abaxial leaf surface. Based on mixed model ANOVA results, interpopulation variability, as statistically significant differences, observed only for stomatal pore length and shape, while all examined traits showed interindividual variability. On the intraindividual level the results showed differences for stomatal traits, except for stomatal width, stomatal shape coefficient and stomatal density regarding leaf exposure. For better understanding of how morphological and stomatal characteristics vary in black poplar populations, further studies should be necessary involving controlled environmental conditions with the aim of examining phenotypic plasticity to changing climate conditions.

AB - Black poplar (Populus nigra L.) is a keystone species of riparian softwood forests along riversides in vast areas of Europe, Western Asia and Northern Africa. Since the end of the 20th century, black poplar has been recognized as an endangered species throughout Europe due to the loss of its natural habitat and possible crossbreeding with hybrid poplars. Using twelve nuclear SSR loci, we analysed the genetic structure of four native populations from three river valleys in the northern part of Serbia. All tested loci were highly polymorphic, displaying 8 to 25 alleles per locus, overall 179 detected alleles and an average effective number of alleles 5.87. Observed heterozygosity (overall H-o = 0.703) has been lower than the expected (overall H-e = 0.808) in each population, which indicates positive mean of fixation index values (overall F-is gt 0 (0.132)). An AMOVA analysis revealed that the highest degree of genetic variation occurred within populations (95.33 %) while the genetic variation between populations was really low (4.67 %). High gene flow and no significant loss of allelic diversity have been recorded in the studied populations in Serbia.

AB - The knowledge of genetic diversity degree of given species is of great importance for the successful process of breeding and genetic conservation. The aim of conducted research was to determine the genetic differentiation of Norway spruce (Picea abies (L.) Karst) genotypes with very specific narrow pyramidal and normal crown type, which grows at different altitude of the mountain Golija. For assessment of genetic similarities or differences between studied genotypes co-dominant microsatellite system had been used. This system has proven to be reliable and efficient in the genetic characterization of plant species. In total 22 primer sets have been tested, while 16 (73%) of them resulted in the successful yield of the amplified product. The analysis show that studied individuals had in total 130 alleles, in average 8.125 polymorphic alleles per each locus. The lowest polymorphism was detected in the locus EATC1D10, EATC1F03B and EATC2G09, while the highest level of polymorphism was detected in EATC2G08. Based on microsatellite date and similarity matrix, cluster analysis dendrogram indicates existence of the vertical differentiation of studied genotypes, which is consistent with results of previous Norway spruce studies.

AB - Morphological study of intra and interpopulation variability of black poplar leaves was carried on four natural populations located in the basin of the major rivers at the area of Vojvodina, Serbia. Research was conducted on the basis of nine leaf morphometric parameters, with descriptive and multivariate statistical analysis. Results show that within and between studied populations exists considerable variability, with the variability much more pronounced within than between populations. Given that the environmental conditions of investigated locations are uniform, it is assumed that the variability is consequences of the specific gene pool of these populations.

AB - The genetic structure of black poplar (Populus nigra L.) populations in the area of Great War Island (GWI) was studied at the level of 30 genotypes, based on microsatellite molecular markers (SSR). Eleven polymorphic SSR loci were used for analysis of intarpopulation genetic variability. Observed and expected heterozygosity in studied population were high (0.70 and 0.82). The fixation index calculated for single locus ranged from - 0.055 (PMGC_14) up to 0.424 (PMGC_2607), while the mean value was 0.143. Deviation from Hardy- Weinberg equilibrium (HWE) differed between single loci. Stabile genetic structure and satisfactory level of genetic variability that have been determined at the population level represent a good starting point for conservation and sustainable use of the available gene pool and further breeding of this species.

AB - A morphological study of intra and interpopulation variability of black poplar leaves was conducted in two populations in the area of Vojvodina. Nine morphometric parameters of leaves have been analyzed. The results indicate that there is considerable variability within and between the populations. Morphological differentiation is clearly represented with the average values of analyzed parameters and a statistically significant difference between the mean values. On the basis of the obtained data, it has been concluded that the variability within the two populations is much more expressed than the variability between them. The uniformity of environmental conditions of the studied locations indicates that this variability is a consequence of the specific gene pool of the studied populations.
