AB  - The objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of the degree of condensation of urea formaldehyde (UF) resins on the tangential penetration into fir and beech and on the tensile shear bond strength of wood joints. Tangential penetration was determined by epi-fluorescence microscopy on microtome slides, exposing the bond line on a cross-sectional surface. The higher the degree of condensation (viscosity) of the resins, the lower is the possibility for penetration; beech showed higher penetration than fir. Bond strengths decreased with increased degree of condensation (viscosity) of the adhesives. Shear strength based on radial penetration was higher than for tangential penetration. The higher the penetration and the thicker, hence, the interphase, the higher was the achieved shear strength.

AB  - This paper is the final part of a series reporting on the penetration (P) and bonding behaviour of urea-formaldehyde (UF) resins of different viscosities based on different degrees of condensation (DCs). The various resins were applied onto radial and tangential wood surfaces, and solid wood assemblies were prepared by hot pressing. P-t and P-r were observed by evaluation of photomicrographs of the bond lines. The mean and maximum depth of penetration was inversely proportional to the DC. The average depth of P-t was found to be slightly higher than P-r because of the abundance of pits on the radial walls. However, the maximum P was higher in radial direction, due to the elliptic shape of vessels in poplar as well as due to rays improving the resin flow. The lap shear strength (sigma(m)) of the same bonded assemblies was determined. Despite the fact that the wood failure always was very high, the sigma(m) increased with the better penetration of the resins with low viscosity. The higher strength values measured has been interpreted as a fortification effect of the interphase by bulk resin penetration, as cell wall penetration cannot be expected due to the large size of such resin molecules.

AB  - Urea-formaldehyde (UF) resin presents, by far, the most utilized adhesive system in the manufacture of particleboard and fiberboard. At the temperatures above 100 degrees C in the presence of catalyst, this resin undergoes cross-linking reaction and bonding of wood particles in a hot press. In this work the cross-linking of the new type of commercial UF adhesive for E1 type of wood based panels was studied using infra red (IR) spectroscopy and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). IR spectra of examined UF adhesive showed distinctive characteristics in comparison to the older types of UF adhesives. The influence of different industrial wood species (obtained from beech, fir and poplar) on the curing behavior of wood-flour/adhesive mixtures has been evaluated using DSC method. The peak temperature and enthalpy of the curing reaction were evaluated from scans obtained with different heating rates. The activation energy for the curing reaction of pure adhesive and for wood-flour/adhesive mixtures was calculated using the Kissinger method.

The cellular nature of wood can cause significant penetration of an adhesive into the substrate. The objective of this work was to evaluate the influence of the degree of condensation of ureaformaldehyde (UF) resins on the radial penetration into silver fir (Abies alba, Mill.) and hence on the distribution of resin in the wood tissue by means of microscopic determination. Three UF resins with different degrees of condensation together with extender and hardener were used as adhesive mixes and were applied onto one of the surfaces to be bonded by hot pressing parallel to the grain direction, with Safranin added as a coloring agent. Microtome slides (20 μm thick) were cut from each joint sample, showing the bondline and the two adherends with the resin penetrated in radial direction. The depth of adhesive penetration was determined by epi-fluorescence microscopy. The results show a significant correlation between the penetration behavior and the degree of condensation (molecular size, viscosity) of the resins. The higher the degree of condensation, the lower is the penetration possibility, expressed as 'Average penetration' depth (AP). The portion of filled tracheids in the radial direction on both sides of the bondline ('Filled interphase region', FIR) however, did not depend statistically on the viscosity of the resin mix.

AB  - Penetration of adhesives plays an important role in wood adhesion, since wood is a porous material. Objectives of this work were (i) the evaluation of the influence of the degree of condensation of urea-formaldehyde (UF) resins on their penetration into beech, showing the distribution of the adhesive in the cell layers close to the bondline using microscopic detection, and (ii) the comparison of data for beech with results for fir obtained earlier. The degree of penetration mostly depends on the permeability and porosity of the wood surface as well as on the resin type and the size of the resin molecules. The process parameters, which also can affect penetration, were kept constant throughout all tests performed. The results show a significant correlation between the penetration behavior and the degree of condensation (molecular size, viscosity) of the resins and adhesive mixes based on these resins. The higher the degree of condensation, the lower the possibility for penetration, expressed as "Average penetration depth" (AP). AP into beech is higher than into fir. The portion of filled tracheids and vessels on the whole cross section of the interphase ("Filled interphase region" FIR) increases slightly with the degree of condensation, but this increase is not statistically significant. FIR in fir is higher than in beech.

AB  - Penetration of adhesives plays an important role in wood adhesion, since wood is a porous material. Objectives of this work were (i) the evaluation of the influence of the degree of condensation of urea-formaldehyde (UF) resins on their penetration into beech, showing the distribution of the adhesive in the cell layers close to the bondline using microscopic detection, and (ii) the comparison of data for beech with results for fir obtained earlier. The degree of penetration mostly depends on the permeability and porosity of the wood surface as well as on the resin type and the size of the resin molecules. The process parameters, which also can affect penetration, were kept constant throughout all tests performed. The results show a significant correlation between the penetration behavior and the degree of condensation (molecular size, viscosity) of the resins and adhesive mixes based on these resins. The higher the degree of condensation, the lower the possibility for penetration, expressed as "Average penetration depth" (AP). AP into beech is higher than into fir. The portion of filled tracheids and vessels on the whole cross section of the interphase ("Filled interphase region" FIR) increases slightly with the degree of condensation, but this increase is not statistically significant. FIR in fir is higher than in beech.

AB  - Penetracija predstavlja sposobnost adheziva da ulazi u praznine na površini drveta ili u samo drvo. Ćelijska priroda drveta omogućava značajnu penetraciju adheziva u tkivo drveta. Predmet ovog istraživanja je procena penetracije, a potom i distribucije urea-formaldehidnih (UF) smola mikroskopskom detekcijom penetracije odgovarajućih UF adheziva u tkivo drveta. Tangencijalno rezane daščice (bočnice) drveta obične jele (Abies alba Mill.) debljine 5 mm, dužine 100 mm (paralelno sa vlaknima) i širine 30 mm pripremljene su za ovo istraživanje. U svrhu ovog istraživanja korišćene su četiri UF smole različitog stepena polikondenzacije. U veziva je dodat safranin pošto je za merenje dubine penetracije adheziva korišćen epi-fluorescentni mikroskop. UF adhezivi, sastavljeni od različitih smola, punioca i katalizatora, nanešeni su na površinu jedne pločice. Dve daščice, jedna sa i jedna bez adheziva, su slepljene u uzorak tako da su im paralelna drvna vlakna. Uzorci su presovani u hidrauličnoj presi 15 min na temperaturi od 120°C i pritisku od 1,0 MPa. Poprečni mikrotomski preparati, debljine 20 μm isečeni su iz svakog uzorka na klizećem mikrotomu. Rezultati pokazuju značajnu zavisnost između penetracije i stepena kondenzacije (veličine molekula, viskoziteta) smole. Što je veći stepen kondenzacije, manja je mogućnost za penetraciju, izražena kao prosečna penetracija (PP) i kao udeo ispunjenih traheida u odnosu na celu zonu lepljenja (ispunjenost zone lepljenja).
AB  - Penetration is the ability of the adhesive to move into the voids on the substrate surface or into the substrate itself. Wood's cellular nature allows significant penetration of the adhesive into the substrate. Objective of this work was the evaluation of the penetration and hence the distribution of urea-formaldehyde (UF) resins by means of microscopic detection of the penetration of such UF adhesives into the wood tissue. The results show a significant correlation between the penetration behaviour and the degree of condensation (molecular sizes, viscosity) of the resins. AB  - Ploča iverica ima izražena higroskopna svojstva, što je čini dimenzionalno nestabilnim materijalom u slučajevima kada je izložena vodi ili u atmosferi sa povećanim sadržajem vlage. Postoji više standardnih metoda ispitivanja debljinskog bubrenja. Cilj ovog rada je usmeren na njihovo upoređenje. U tu svrhu upoređene su tri različite metode za ispitivanje upijanja vode i debljiskog bubrenja: dve koje propisuje nacionalni standard SRPS D.C8.104 i metoda prema evropskom standardu EN 317. Rezultati ispitivanja za oba pomenuta svojstva ukazali su da ne postoje značajne razlike između EN metode zasnovane na epruvetama formata 50×50 mm i SRPS metode zasnovane na upotrebi epruveta 100×100 mm, sugerišući da se obe ove metode mogu alternativno koristiti. Sa druge strane, rezultati dobijeni SRPS metodom uz upotrebu epruveta dimenzija 25×25 mm, znatno su se razlikovali od predhodnih, odnosno ispitivanja po ovoj metodi zabeležila su znatno niže vrednosti debljinskog bubrenja, bez obzira na debljinu ispitivane ploče.
AB  - In regard to its hygroscopic properties, particleboard is dimensionally unstable material when exposed to water or in the atmosphere of high level of humidity. Since today several different standardized methods for determination of thickness swelling exist, the aim of this study was focused on comparison of different testing methods. In this aim, three different methods for determination of water soaking and thickness swelling were compared, two of which were defined by national standard SRPS D.C8.104 and one was defined by European standard EN 317. The results of testing of both properties have shown no significant difference between the EN method based on 50×50 mm test pieces and the SRPS method based on test pieces of 100×100 mm format, suggesting that these two methods can be used alternatively. On the other hand, the results obtained by the SRPS method utilizing the 25×25 mm test pieces, differed significantly from both previous methods. The results were lower for both water soaking and thickness swelling regardless of panel thickness.

AB  - U cilju dobijanja vatrootpornih furnirskih ploča od različitih drvnih sirovina, u ovom istraživanju topolovi furniri su impregnisani rastvorima izabranih vatrootpornih sredstava, a to su: diamonijum fosfat (DF), monoamonijum fosfat (MF), natrijum acetat (NA), vodeno staklo (VS), natrijum tetraborat (NT) i borna kiselina (BK). Da bi se preliminarno odredio dostignuti nivo vatrootpornosti još kod furnira, pre izrade gotovih ploča, primenjene su termogravimetrijska (TG) i derivativna termogravimetrijska (DTG) metoda. TG i DTG analize za tretirano i netretirano drvo kao i za sama vatrootporna sredstva su izvedene na Perkin-Elmer TGS-2 termogravimetrijskom uređaju. Vatrootpornost ploča je testirana prema standardnom testu otpornosti prema dejstvu vatre i kao najefikasnija sredstva su se pokazala isto NT i BK kao i kod TG/DTG analiza, što ukazuje na validnost termogravimetrijske metode u predviđanju uspešnosti vatrootpornog sredstva u budućem proizvodu.
AB  - In the aim to achieve fire-resistant plywood of different wood species, in this study, veneers have been impregnated with solutions of chosen fire retardants, which are diammonium phosphate, monoammonium phosphate, sodium acetate, water glass, sodium tetraborate and boric acid. To determine the preliminary level of fire retardancy achieved in veneers before manufacturing of finished plywood, thermogravimetric (TG) and derivative thermogravimetric (DTG) methods are used. TG and DTG analyses of treated and untreated wood, as well as of fire retardants alone, were performed on a Perkin-Elmer TGS-2 thermogravimetric equipment. Fire resistance of plywood was tested in accordance with standard test for resistance to the effects of fire and the most efficient fire retardants, sodium tetraborate and boric acid had the same results as TG/DTG analyses, which points out the validity of TG methods in predicting success of fire retardants in future products.

AB  - Penetracija adheziva ima značajnu ulogu u adheziji drveta, pošto je drvo porozni materijal. Stepen penetracije najviše zavisi od faktora drveta, vrste i recepture adheziva i parametara presovanja. Za ovo istraživanje pripremljene su tangencijalno rezane daščice (bočnice) bukovog drveta (Fagus moesiaca) debljine 5 mm, dužine 100 mm (paralelno sa vlaknima) i širine 30 mm. Urea-formaldehidni adheziv je nanešen na površinu jedne pločice. Dve daščice su slepljene u uzorak tako da su im paralelna drvna vlakna. Uzorci su presovani u hidrauličnoj presi 15 min na temperaturi od 120°C i pritisku od 0,7 MPa. Poprečni mikrotomski preparati, debljine 20 μm isečeni su na klizećem mikrotomu. Evidentan je nedostatak iscrpnijih istraživanja penetracije ureaformaldehidnih (UF) adheziva u drvo. Pošto su UF-smole najvažnija vrsta adheziva u drvnoj industriji u poslednjih 60 godina, cilj ovog istraživanja je mikroskopsko određivanje UF-adhezivne penetracije u tkivo drveta. U svrhu ovog istraživanja korišćene su četiri UF-smole različitog stepena polikondenzacije. U veziva je dodat safranin pošto je za merenje dubine penetracije adheziva korišćen epi-fluorescentni mikroskop.

AB  - Osnovni motiv ovog rada je sve naglašenija potreba za furnirskim pločama otpornim na vatru. U ovom radu, bukovi furniri su impregnisani rastvorima izabranih vatrootpornih sredstava, a to su: diamonijum fosfat (DF) monoamonijum fosfat (MF), natrijum acetat (NA), vodeno staklo (VS), natrijum tetraborat (NT) i borna kiselina (BK). Da bi se preliminarno odredio dostignuti nivo vatrootpornosti još kod furnira, pre izrade gotovih ploča primenjene su termogravimetrijska (TG) i derivativna termogravimetrijska (DTG) metoda. TG i DTG analize za tretirano i netretirano drvo kao i za sama vatrootporna sredstva su izvedene na Perkin-Elmer TGS-2 termogravimetrijskom uređaju. Vatrootpornost ploča je testirana prema standardnom testu otpornosti prema dejstvu vatre i kao najefikasnija sredstva su se pokazala isto MF i NT kao i kod TG/DTG analiza, što ukazuje na validnost termogravimetrijske metode u predviđanju uspešnosti vatrootpornog sredstva u budućem proizvodu.

AB  - Ovo istraživanje je zasnovano na pretpostavci da promene u veličini i obliku iverja mogu imati uticaj na kvalitet ploče iverice uopšte. Pošto su konvencionalna ploča iverica i ploča iverica od orijentisanog "strend" iverja (OSB) izrađene od sasvim različtog iverja, predstavljaju interesantne predmete poređenja. U ovom radu ispitan je uticaj tipa iverja na ivično držanje vijaka u konvencionalnoj i OSB ploči iverici. Ispitivanja su rađena uz upotrebu vijaka prečnika 4,0, 4,5 i 5,0 mm. Dubina uvrtanja je iznosila 30 mm za sve testove, a vijčani otvori su imali prečnik u opsegu 80-90% u odnosu na prečnik korena vijka. Takođe, obavljena su i ispitivanja debljinskog profila gustine i zatezne čvrstoće upravno na površinu ploče, pošto oba ova svojstva predstavljaju pokazatelje kvaliteta srednjeg sloja ploče u kome je smešteno telo vijka. U cilju boljeg uvida u strukturu srednjeg sloja obavljen je vizuelni pregled površinskog preseka uzorka. U radu su utvrđene značajne razlike između otpornosti prema izvlačenju vijka kod konvencionalne i OSB ploče iverice, pri svim prečnicima vijaka. Pri tome, uzorci OSB-a pokazali su 56-73% veće srednje vrednosti sile izvlačenja u odnosu na konvencionalnu ploču. Sa druge strane, OSB ploča je pokazala veće rasipanje rezultata za sve prečnike vijka, što može dovesti do određenih problema prilikom projektovanja i izrade nameštaja.
AB  - This research was based on presumption that the changes in size and shape of wood particles are expected to have certain impact on the particleboard quality in general. Since the conventional particleboard (PB) and oriented strand board (OSB) were built of the quite diverse wood particles, they present interesting specimens in the comparison tests. In this work, the influence of the wood particles type on the edge screw holding performance of conventional particleboard and OSB was investigated. Those tests were obtained with the screw diameters of 4.0 mm, 4.5 mm and 5 mm. Depth of embedment was 30 mm for all tests and with the pilot-hole diameter kept in the range of 80-90% in respect of the screw root diameter. Additional tests of the thickness density profile and tensile strength perpendicular to the surface of the board were conducted. Since the middle layer structure of the particleboard embeds the screw body, both mentioned parameters are considered important in the aspect of the quality of the edge screw holding performance. In order to have further insight into the conformation of the middle layer the image survey was obtained on the split board section presenting the surface of the middle layer. Significant differences in the SWR performance of OSB and PB was recorded at all screw diameters. For the screw withdrawal tests parameters OSB samples showed 56-73% superior mean values then conventional PB. On the other hand, the OSB showed wider dispersions of measured withdrawal forces at all screw diameters, which might present some of the problems in certain engineering and project calculations.

AB  - U ovom radu je predstavljen metod za poboljšanje vijčane veze u konvencionalnoj ploči iverici i ploči sa orijentisanim iverjem (OSB). Metod je zasnovan na predhodnom ubrizgavanju odgovarajućeg adheziva u vijčane otvore. Obe ispitivane ploče predstavljaju enterijerne ploče iste nominalne debljine od 18 mm. Ispitivanja su obavljena korišćenjem vijaka za ploče iverice sa navojem po celoj dužini tela vijka i prečnika od 5,0 mm. Vijci su uvrtani ivično u ispitne epruvete, pri čemu je dubina uvrtanja iznosila 30 mm za sva merenja sile izvlačenja. Prečnici vijčanog otvora iznosili su 2,5 mm i 3,0 mm. Odabrani PVAc lepak (tip 3) pomešan sa drvnim puniocem u količiini od 3-10% ubrizgavan je u vijčane otvore. Ispitivanja sile izvlačenja vijka su, takođe, rađena i posle demontaže vijka i naknadnog uvrtanja u cilju ispitivanja montažno-demontažnog karaktera vijčane veze. Ustanovljeno je da ubrizgavanje lepka u vijčane otvore i dodatak drvnog brašna imaju pozitivne efekte na silu ivičnog izvlačenja vijka u ispitivanim pločama.
AB  - This work presents the method for improvement of direct screw connection performance in conventional particleboard (PB) and oriented strand board (OSB). It is conceived on adhesive insertion into the pilot hole prior to embedment of the screw. The tests were carried out on the PB and OSB, both presenting interior boards and with the same nominal thickness of 18 mm. Particleboard screws of the 5 mm in diameter were inserted in the edge of the board. Pilot hole diameters were 2,5 mm and 3,0 mm and the depth of embedment was 30 mm for all tests. The chosen PVAc adhesive (type 3) with the addition of wood flour as consolidator in the range from 3-10% was inserted into pilot-hole. Tests were also obtained after consequent reassembly of the screw connection in order to examine the ratio of loss in withdrawal forces in such case. It was found that the insertion of PVAc adhesive into the pilot hole and the addition of wood flour have the positive effects on the screw withdrawal force in the tested boards.

AB  - Urea-formaldehidni (UF) adhezivi su najvažniji adhezivi u drvnoj industriji posledljih 60 godina, posebno za proizvodnju ploča na bazi drveta. Od pre dve dekade ušli su u upotrebu pogodniji urea-formaldehidni adhezivi u praškastom stanju, proizvedeni raspršivanjem u vakuumu. Male i srednje privatne fabrike za preradu drveta u Srbiji radije koriste ovakve sprašene adhezive, pošto su pogodniji za nisko kapacitetnu proizvodnju. U Srbiji se ne proizvode ovakvi urea-formaldehidni adhezivi, pa se oni uvoze iz inostranstva uključujući i azijske proizvođače. Međutim, njihove karakteristike variraju zavisno od postupka sinteze i korisnici nisu dobro upoznati sa njima. Cilj ovog rada bio je određivanje pogodnosti i nedostataka primene dva uvezena praškasta urea-formaldehidna adheziva, u poređenju sa dobro poznatom domaćom urea-formaldehidnom emulzijom.
AB  - Urea-formaldehyde (UF) glue resins were the most important type of adhesives in the wood industry last 60 years, especially for the production of wood based panels. More convenient spray dried UF powders went into use last two decades. Small and medium private wood processing plants in Serbia prefer to use such powder adhesives, since they are more convenient for small capacity production. There is no production of UF powder resin in Serbia so necessary quantities are imported from abroad including producers from Asia. However, their characteristics are variable, dependent on syntheses steps and not well known among users. Objective of this research was to determine conveniences and lacks in application of two imported UF powder resins in comparison to domestic UF emulsion.

AB  - Novi materijali bazirani na drvetu imaju tu prednost da im se svojstva mogu podešavati kako bi odgovarali zahtevima kupaca. Svojstva koja je moguće podešavati odnose se kako na korišćenje tako i na obradljivost, a to su zatezna čvrstoća, elongacija pri prekidu, modul elastičnosti i otpornost na udar. Istraživanje na Šumarskom fakultetu i Hemijskoj industriji "HIPOL" odnosi se na novi tip drvno-polipropilenskih kompozita. Maseni sadržaj punioca u vidu drvnog brašna bukve variran je u opsegu od 40-70%. Pri dostizanju najveće zatezne čvrstoće sa sadržajem od 50% punioca ispitivan je i uticaj porekla drvnog punioca pri ovom sadržaju. Zbog toga je korišćeno drvno brašno od bukve, topole, acetilovane borovine i od MDF ploče. Takođe, istraživan je uticaj sastava drvnog punioca (bukva u kombinaciji sa MDF, topolom i acetilovanom borovinom) u poređenju sa čistom polipropilenskom matricom, kao i uticaj tipa kuplujućeg agensa. Rezultati dobijeni u ovom radu mogu da posluže kao inicijalni podaci za proizvodnju čvrstih i lako obradljivih kompozita.
AB  - New materials based on wood have the advantage in the sense that their properties can be engineered so as to correspond to user demands. The properties which can be engineered are those relating both to their utilisation and machining, in particular - the tensile strength, elongation at break, modulus of elasticity and impact resistance. The research at the Faculty of Forestry and "Hipol" Chemical Industry related to the new type of wood-polypropylene composite. The content of wood filler was varied in the range between 40% and 70% mass contents of beech wood flour. After the highest tensile strength at 50% of filler content was determined, the effect of the wood filler origin was also examined at this content value. Therefore, wood flour of beech, poplar, acetylated pine and the waste MDF was used. The influence of the composition of the wood filler (beech combined with MDF, poplar and acetylated pine) in comparison with pure polypropylene matrix was also examined, as well as the effect of the type of coupling agent. Hopefully, the results obtained in this study might serve as the initial data for production of easily machined high-strength composites.

AB  - Poslednjih desetak godina, u skladu sa novim standardima i propisima, znatno povećana je potreba za vatrootpornim drvenim konstrukcijama i elementima. S druge strane, evidentan je nedostatak detaljnih istraživanja interakcije između drvnih vrsta, posebno domaćih i izabranih, čak i osnovnih vatrootpornih hemikalija. U ovom istraživanju, bukovi i topolovi furniri su različito vreme impregnisani potapanjem u 25% rastvor monoamoonijum-fosfata (MP) i natrijum-acetata (SA). U cilju preliminarnog određivanja postignute vatrootpornosti u furnirima, pre izrade gotove furnirske ploče, sprovedene su dinamičke metode termalne analize i to: termogravimetrijska (TG) analiza i derivativna termogravimetrijska (DTG) analiza impregniranog i neimpregnisanog drveta kao i samih vatrootpornih sredstava. Za impregnisane i neimpregnisane furnire su takođe određene i sledeće karakteristike absorpcija impregnacionog rastvora (A), maseni procentualni prinos vatrootpornih sredstava (WPG), ravnotežna vlaga (EMC), pH vrednost, a za furnirske ploče još i smicajna čvrstoća i vatrootpornost. Vatroootpornost furnirskih ploča je testirana prema JUS standardu i kao efikasniji se pokazao monoamonijum-fosfat što su pokazale i TG/DTG analize iz čega se može zaključiti da TG metode imaju značajnu ulogu u predviđanju vatrootpornosti budućeg proizvoda.
AB  - Rising demands for fire resistance properties of wood construction and elements matching new standards have been an important part of building codes during the last decade. On the other side, lack of more detailed research on interaction between wood species and selected fire retardant chemicals even with basically one is evident. This is particularly truth with domestic wood species. In this research, beech and poplar veneers were immersed in 25% solutions of monoammonium phosphate (MP) and sodium acetate (SA) and impregnated for different periods of time. To determine the preliminary level of fire retardancy achieved in veneers before manufacturing of finished plywood, thermo gravimetric (TG) and derivative thermo gravimetric (DTG) methods were used. TG and DTG analyses of treated and untreated wood, as well as of fire retardants alone, were performed. The next properties of impregnated and no impregnated veneers and plywood were determined: absorption of imp regnant solution (A), weight percent gain (WPG) of imp regnant, equilibrium moisture content (EMC), pH values, and in the case of plywood, strength and fire resistance. Fire resistance of plywood was tested in accordance with standard test for resistance to the effects of fire and the most efficient fire retardant, monoammonium phosphate, had the same result as TG/DTG analyses, which pointed out the validity of TG methods in predicting fire resistance of future products.

Za impregnisane i neimpregnisane furnire su takođe određene i sledeće karakteristike absorpcija impregnacionog rastvora (A), maseni procentualni prinos vatrootpornih sredstava (WPG), ravnotežna vlaga (EMC), pH vrednost, a za furnirske ploče još i smicajna čvrstoća i vatrootpornost. Vatroootpornost furnirskih ploča je testirana prema JUS standardu i kao efikasniji se pokazao monoamonijum-fosfat što su pokazale i TG/DTG analize iz čega se može zaključiti da TG metode imaju značajnu ulogu u predviđanju vatrootpornosti budućeg proizvoda., Rising demands for fire resistance properties of wood construction and elements matching new standards have been an important part of building codes during the last decade. On the other side, lack of more detailed research on interaction between wood species and selected fire retardant chemicals even with basically one is evident. This is particularly truth with domestic wood species. In this research, beech and poplar veneers were immersed in 25% solutions of monoammonium phosphate (MP) and sodium acetate (SA) and impregnated for different periods of time. To determine the preliminary level of fire retardancy achieved in veneers before manufacturing of finished plywood, thermo gravimetric (TG) and derivative thermo gravimetric (DTG) methods were used. TG and DTG analyses of treated and untreated wood, as well as of fire retardants alone, were performed. The next properties of impregnated and no impregnated veneers and plywood were determined: absorption of imp regnant solution (A), weight percent gain (WPG) of imp regnant, equilibrium moisture content (EMC), pH values, and in the case of plywood, strength and fire resistance. Fire resistance of plywood was tested in accordance with standard test for resistance to the effects of fire and the most efficient fire retardant, monoammonium phosphate, had the same result as TG/DTG analyses, which pointed out the validity of TG methods in predicting fire resistance of future products.",

AB  - Chemical structure and concentrations of coupling agents are the most important in choosing appropriate coupling action between polymer matrix and wood filler in composites. In this study, the efficiency of new amido-acrylic acid (AMACA) coupling agent synthesized for this propose at the Forestry Faculty of the Belgrade University, was compared with two well-known commercial coupling agents, anhydride of maleic acid (in the form of maleated polypropylene MAPP) and silane A-1100 (gamma-aminopropyltriethoxy silane). The polypropylene-wood flour (PP-WFl) composites were produced with 40% of wood particles having a fraction size of 0.3 mm. The melt-blended composites were modified with coupling agents in amounts of 1.7, 4.0 and 6 wt.% (based on wood filler) and successively with 0.05 wt.% (based on PP) of organic peroxide during the mixing step. The composites containing coupling agents showed superior mechanical properties, compared with the untreated ones. The highest extent of improvement of tensile and impact properties was achieved with PP-WFl composites modified by an AMACA coupling agent.

AB  - The ethylene-propylene-dien-monomer (EPDM) is a well known elastomer component for modification of polypropylene (PP) impact properties. The subject of this study is the possibility of improving the properties of polypropylene/wood flour (PP/WFL) composites by using EPDM both as a compatibilizer and coupling agent in quantities of 10, 20 and 30% (relative to PP mass). The tensile modulus of elasticity and tensile strength values are increased in the cases of PP/ WFL composites with 10 and 20% of EPDM content, with respect to PP/ WFL control composites. However, in the case of 30% of EPDM content values of these properties decreased. The IZOD impact resistance values are increased for all test composites, but most of all in the case of composite with 30% of EPDM.
