AB - The paper investigates the natural regeneration of downed deadwood in the Janj primeval forest. The old-growth forest is located in the southwestern part of the Republic of Srpska, which is dominated by dolomite geological base on which cambial soils were formed. The climate is perhumid and mountainous and the plantation belongs to the Piceo-Abieti-Fagetum community. The hectare contains 517 live trees with a total basal area of 53.0 m2/ha and a volume of 876 m(3)/ha. Twenty six downed deadwoods classified into three different degrees of decay were included in the study, where fir and spruce seedlings were found to be predominant and beech seedlings were rarely represented. The first degree of decay includes 7 (26.9 %), the second 8 (30.7 %), and the third 11 (42.3 %). The total volume of deadwood is 110.82 m3/ha with an average volume per tree of 4.2 m3/ha. The total number of seedlings on fallen dead trees is 836 seedlings (Abies alba - 89.59 %, Picea abies - 10.17 %, Fagus silvatica - 0.24 %).Fir seedlings are found on 25 fallen trees, spruce on 18 fallen trees, and beech on 2 fallen trees. Regarding quality, on average fir seedlings are better than spruce seedlings, but both species show a lot of senescence and very small size of current height increment. Most seedlings belong to the third quality class (fir - 46.2 %, spruce - 61.1 %), followed by second class (fir - 34.6 %, spruce -22.2 %) and third class (fir - 19.2 %, spruce - 16.7 %). The total number of seedlings was found to have a statistically significant difference in the amount of downed deadwood depending on the degree of decay, and the number of seedlings depended on the degree of tree decay. The number of seedlings increased with increasing volume and length of rotten trees.

AB - In central Bosnia and Herzegovina, in the Zavidovici-Teslic area, the study of the radial growth of Austrian and Scots pine (autochthonous pine species) trees was conducted using the dendrochronological method in order to identify the differences between the species in terms of the influence of climatic variables on the tree ring formation. Trees were sampled in five experimental areas or five sites. The first site had a Scots pine stand, while the second had an Austrian pine stand, and the other three sites had mixed stands of Scots and Austrian pine. Cross-dating was conducted using visual on-screen techniques of CDendro software and statistical methods using Cofecha software. The tree ring series were standardized using the Arstan program and cubic smoothing spline. It produced Scots pine regional chronology, 145 years long (1870-2014), and Austrian pine regional chronology, 180 years long (1835-2014). Correlation analysis of the relationship between the index of tree-ring width and precipitation and temperature in the characteristic periods of the year showed a negative effect of temperature (except in winter months) and a positive effect of precipitation on the tree ring formation. The statistically significant dependence of the tree-ring width index on the SPEI indices indicates a significant impact of moisture deficiency on the tree ring formation in the period from June to August (r = 0.33 in June, r = 0.45 in July and r = 0.47 in August) for Scots pine and in the period from June to September (r = 0.36 in June, r = 0.43 in July, r = 0.47 in August and r = 0.30 in September) for Austrian pine. The analysis of the relationship between climatic parameters and the chronologies of Scots and Austrian pine shows similar relationships between radial growth and climate but the influence of climate is somewhat more pronounced in Austrian pine. In the study area, the radial growth of both tree species is significantly determined by climate conditions. In other words, the chronology of these species has a good climatic signal, especially the drought signal in the summer months.

AB - The paper presents the results of a research on wood fuels used for heating in households in the Republic of Srpska (RS). The main objective of this research was to determine the real consumption of wood fuels in households in the Republic of Srpska using the internationally recognized WISDOM methodology, as well as to compare the obtained results with the official statistical data. In order to conduct the research and obtain a relevant sample, the Republic of Srpska was divided into six mesoregions. The research was conducted in 3,149 households, namely 1,380 urban and 1,769 other households. The results indicated that firewood and other wood fuels were used in 334,761 households. Analyzing the differences between the results obtained using the WISDOM methodology and the official statistical data for the Republic of Srpska, it can be concluded that the consumption of firewood was on average 3.41 times higher compared to the official statistical data. Results of similar research projects implemented in the surrounding countries showed similar trends. The paper suggests the necessity of adopting a new approach and comprehensive research in surveys conducted by official institutions.
