Greens are true oases in urban centers, places for relaxation in which piece reigns, so cultivating and maintaining parks and greens in towns is of utmost importance. But greens lying on damp and poorly insolated grounds are susceptible to an occurrence of a large number of moss species which in this case become real weeds. It should be pointed out that mosses are not harmful to the growth and maturity of grass, but that they mar the appearance and uniformity of lawns appearing in damaged and poorly cultivated areas. The most frequent moss species on greens in the city of Belgrade are Brachythecium uvulare B. S. & G., Brachythecium rutabulum (Hedw.) B. S. & G., Brachythecium velutinum (Hedw.) B. S. & G., Eurhynchium Mans (Hedw.) Sande Lac, Eurhynchium praelongum (Hedw.) B. S. & G., Homalothecium lutescens (Hedw.) Robins., Homalothecium sericeum (Hedw.) B. S. & G., Hypnum cupressiforme Hedw. var. cupressiforme and Leskea polycarpa Hedw. In order to supress the growth of mosses on lawns ...and thus protect greens, it is imperative to apply direct measures and measures of prevention. Measures of prevention include elimination of shade (by thinning out treetops, removing unnecessary bushes, etc.), brushing, raking and lawn verification, lawn overlay (covering seeds with sand or sand substrata) while direct measures include the application of chemical agents and mechanical removal of dead mosses.
